What are you waiting for? Seriously! I want to help you get started (or refine and monetize the use of) using videos in your business and marketing…

Please don’t pass by this article if you haven’t started doing video yet in your business – for marketing, your website, tips, engaging clients and more. This seriously is something you don’t want to ignore anymore. And if you’re already doing videos in your business, you may catch a few tips here that can enhance your videos, capture you more viewers and convert more paying customers!

In my business and marketing coaching business you can imagine that I hear a lot of excuses as to why someone isn’t or doesn’t want to do video yet in their business. I do. I hear it all!

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a way to get around those obstacles or fears that you may have and learn how to maximize what you’re doing on video to get the biggest bang for your buck so-to-speak.

The 3 biggest obstacles or excuses that I hear entrepreneurs make about recording or promoting videos:

  1. Mindset – you don’t think you look or sound good on video
  2. Strategy – you aren’t sure what to say, share or promote on video
  3. Systems – you aren’t that tech savvy or aren’t sure what software or technology to use to record your video and get it out there

In this article and the following 2 articles, I will share a bunch of tips for combatting each one of these so hopefully this helps you get started using video now!

Tips to Combat the Mindset Resistance – you don’t think you look or sound good on video. If you want to make yourself look or feel better when recording video, try these suggestions:

  • Your Appearance – Do your hair like you would for a night out on the town. Double up on or darken your makeup application so it’s pretty heavy, light makeup hardly shows up at all on video, trust me, it won’t look like you’re Tammy Fay Baker. Use Visine for your eyes if they tend to be red or tired. Focus on under eye makeup too if you tend to have dark circles, use white or light under eye makeup.
  • Your Outfit – Make sure it’s not too busy of a pattern you’re wearing or it will detract from your face. If you’re newer to shooting video, try just shooting from the chest up but if you do choose to stand, watch for slimming outfits or black bottoms and a colored shirt. Black and white shirts tend not to be the best option. Try to accent yourself with fun jewelry that pops if you want to make more of a statement. And scarves hide wrinkled necks if you are concerned about that.
  • Your Surroundings – Your background is important, make sure the props, pictures, walls, artwork, furniture in the frame or in the background are suitable for public viewing. People could judge you on your surroundings for example if you have laundry on the floor or a messy desk, etc. It’s also very strategic to place something that brands your business, yourself or one of your products, books or programs in the back or side of you too.

Please don’t ignore this, take heed to my suggestions and just get started doing some videos. Remember, not that many people in the beginning will even see them so you’re safe! Then just keep getting better and better at them; don’t give up, make this at least a monthly habit!

I’m so excited (and annoyed actually at the same time)!

Here’s why….

Yay! I was on TV yesterday, on the show in Sacramento, CA called Sac & Co.

I shared some of my story with viewers and why they need to take charge of their life now, don’t wait and don’t settle.

Because it’s of interest to a lot of people, it’s more mainstream AND it does go along with my book, Love Yourself Successful, which is ONE WAY into my business and me….

But the reason I’m annoyed is….

That just frustrates me.

I was at a women’s conference a couple years ago and one of the main things that stuck with me from that particular conference was that we don’t have just ONE purpose in life or in business, but we have three.

It made sense and maybe you’ll agree.

It always felt hard for me to answer that question when my coaches and mentors or even my clients asked me, “What is your purpose?”.

But this makes it simple I think, see what you think and comment below!

You May Have 3 Purposes:

  1. Professional Purpose – this is why you do what you do from an expertise standpoint. What is the transformation you provide? What are the resources or the trainings you provide? And whom or how many is it for?
  2. Global Purpose – this is the bigger purpose that that for the planet and why you’re here on earth. What kind of legacy or impact do you want to make on a global basis?
  3. Personal Purpose – this is YOUR big why and why you do what you do from a personal standpoint. What you really want for yourself and those you love and how will you make an impact this way?
What do you think? Do you have more than one purpose? I do.
  • My Professional Purpose is to help entrepreneurs jumpstart their businesses and themselves by implementing profitable business systems, models, and marketing so they can create a smooth-running, moneymaking business they love.

It’s time to evolve your marketing plan and strategy, especially if you haven’t updated it in a while or if you have no real strategy at all.

Being an entrepreneur in this day and age there is NO getting around being online, being visible, credible, knowledgable and informative. Let’s face it, if you’re not already embracing most social media platforms for whatever reason, it’s time to start paying attention and get interactive online. But it’s more than just “being” on social media, there is a lot more to pay attention to and this can help.

I recently returned from a pretty big social media and digital marketing conference and there were a few key things that I gleaned from this event that I’m going to implement more or pay attention to when updating my marketing strategy (right now, not later, but now) and I thought you may want to know what these updated trends are as well. And the reason I’ve dated them here is because this stuff changes fast so make sure YOU are getting updates like this from your own team or mentors regularly (or connect with me and get mine).

7 Updated Online Marketing Trends – July 2014

  1. Facebook business pages no longer have good reach, they are now set up for more of a pay-to-reach type of opportunity. It used to be, as recent as October 2013, that your posts would get a reach of 10-12% of your total fans. Now, in April of 2014, only 6 months later, Facebook has changed our pages and we’re only seeing an average of 1-2% reach. Why is that? Facebook obviously wanted us to enjoy having this opportunity to reach our fans and followers but now they want to get paid for that. You can’t blame them but WE, the entrepreneur, have to evolve where we’re focusing our efforts in order to continue reaching enough prospects, new leads and customers online. Remember, you want to use Facebook as just a marketing tool, posting and commenting isn’t always what works on these platforms, it’s the actual one-to-one connecting that works, make sure you have a strategy for doing that effectively on social sites to enough people each month.
  2. Almost 5 billion pieces of content are shared daily on Facebook and 500 million tweets are shared each day on Twitter. How interactive are YOU on these sites and others?
  3. 84% of people you’re marketing to trust recommendations from people they know which means you want to build a loyal following with people who will share and refer you. You may also consider that any paid advertising you do could work less due to this fact as well. What are YOU doing to educate and keep in touch with your database each month?
  4. 100 hours of videos are uploaded to YouTube every minute. How much of that is video you produced and are sharing? This is probably one of THE most CRITICAL marketing strategies you want to figure out how to add effectively to your plan this year.
  5. Podcasts are becoming so popular that some of the new car makers are installing podcast players and stations into car radios along side the AM/FM stations. 39 million Americans have listened to a podcast in the last month.

    Mobile viewers make up more than 40% of all YouTube global watch-time, more than 1 billion videos are uploaded per day. Is YOUR site mobile friendly where someone doesn’t actually have to move the site around to see what’s on it, really mobile friendly not just visible via mobile? There’s a difference. And are you on YouTube with videos and podcasts where your prospects can listen and watch you on the go?

  7. Buyers are 70% of the way to a buying decision BEFORE they agree to talk with you which means you must have a very impressive, credible, functional and action-oriented website and overall online presence. Do you?

Most of all however, for all types of marketing, the goal should be to get them into your mailing and email database so that you can continue to market to them. You’ve got to build relationships with them over time; that’s the most effective way to market to anyone. People will do business with people they like, trust and connect with so make it easy for them to do business with you and refer their friends to you too!

Let’s face it, as an entrepreneur we have all kinds of ideas all the time. It’s a curse and a blessing. But often times those ideas distract us from what we need to stay focused on each and every day in order to keep the cash flowing into our business.

It’s pretty common also for entrepreneurs to have some level of ADD or ADHD. Although I’ve never been diagnosed, I’m sure I’ve got some level of one of those!

Therefore, we have to constantly find ways to stay focused, keep on track with our plan for growth in our business and revenue generation while keeping an eye on the big picture plan and vision and where else we can take our business. It’s a lot to manage every day right?

I know for a lot of my coaching clients this is a topic we have to cover often so I wanted to share 7 ways I help clients (and myself too) become more productive that hopefully can help you as well.

7 Ways to become more productive in your life and your business:

  1. Work off a good calendar system that can help you track your time, plot time slots out for different activities and one that you can use anywhere you are to save time.
  2. Track your time for one week solid on everything you do, personally and professionally, and see where you’re wasting time, could get rid of things you’re doing, delegate or automate some things you’re doing, etc.
  3. Set goals for yourself each day, week and month on what you plan to accomplish (see below).
  4. Have your big vision in mind each day so do whatever you have to do daily to make sure that stays on top of mind with you so that you stay focused and get distracted less.
  5. Find an accountability buddy (or coach) or someone who supports what you’re doing in your business fully to stay in touch with however often you need them too – daily, weekly or monthly perhaps but that may be too long.
  6. Unsubscribe from emails and lists that are slowing you down and not contributing to either your enhanced learning, implementing, taking action or accountability. Or have them redirect into a folder you won’t see every day and you can look at when you have time. But don’t let daily emails distract you from the tasks at hand.
  7. Have a marketing and business plan that you’re working from so you know WHERE and HOW to spend your time each day, week, or month. If you don’t have a plan or know EXACTLY what to do, reach out and get a coach who can help you with this FIRST!

Copy these to a Word document now and set up YOUR TIME MANAGEMENT SYSTEM and COMMITMENTS. 

  1. Each week I will spend ________ hours working ON my business which will include marketing activities, marketing and business planning, implementation, sales calls and lead generation. This will NOT include bookkeeping, data entry, graphic or web design or anything else that could be done by someone else for less than my time costs and/or who would be better at the task anyway. I have plotted the time on my calendar to make sure this happens.
  2. I will prioritize my tasks so that the MOST IMPORTANT ones get done first and I will only put on my To Do List those things that I can successfully accomplish during the time allotted.  ______ (initial here)
  3. Each month I will spend ________ hours learning new things (pertinent to my immediate growth) to expand my knowledge base and my business and I have plotted the time on my calendar to make sure this happens.
  4. Each month I will spend ________ hours just for ME and I have plotted the time on my calendar to make sure this happens.
  5. Each month I will spend ________ hours for my family and friends and I have plotted the time on my calendar to make sure this happens.

One thing a lot of entrepreneurs avoid doing in their business is implementing systems and structure. Why is that? 

  • It could be that you aren’t sure how to be more efficient or automated or what to do to get you there.
  • It could be that you’re more of a free spirit and systems and structure sound hard, foreign or horrible at best.
  • Or it could be that you just don’t recognize that you need them.

Systems and structure (sometimes only need to be done one time too!) if put into place in various areas of your business will definitely help you get out of frustration and overwhelm about so much to do!

What I mean by systems and structure is not specific software or programs of some kind necessarily. It’s the strategy and process behind what you’re doing in your business, marketing, follow up and sales. Systems and structure like the ones I’m referring to could lie on your website, shopping cart, software or even offline systems for things that need to happen to run and market your business more effectively and efficiently.

Typically, entrepreneurs who are more creative types of big picture thinkers don’t tend to gravitate towards these types of details whereas those more educated or detail oriented entrepreneurs take too much time with these details and often don’t get to the necessary sales and marketing activities which is not good either.

Let me share a few key reasons why, if you’re someone who’s a bit more resistant (or oblivious) to creating and implementing systems and structure, you want to start paying attention pretty quickly.

You will:

  1. Gain more hours back in your day.
  2. Reach and impact many more people and prospects.
  3. Sell more and make more money regularly.
  4. Become more known and elevate your expert status.
  5. Get more exposure and visibility.
  6. If something tragic happens in your life you will have the time and ability to handle it.

No one thinks anything tragic will happen to them of course, but I’d like to have you please rethink that. If I was talking to you right now in person I would tell you my story and why it’s made me so passionate about helping other entrepreneurs embrace and implement more systems and structure into their business. What I can tell you is that things were going along great about two years ago.  In fact, I had just met the man of my dreams.

But within two years, I had to have two full hip replacement surgeries (at age 42 and 43) and my fiancé has had kidney stones and now an even more urgent medical issue, he developed cancer in his tonsil. (If you’re worried about him, it seems as if he will be ok with a couple surgeries, we’re hoping for no radiation and chemo.)

All of these issues we never anticipated or thought would happen to us but they did. All of them also took us out of our work or business for a minimum of a week if not a lot longer in the case of my surgeries and possibly the current situation.

Luckily I do have many systems and structures in place as well as a pretty decent size team that helped me get stuff done and keep the marketing going while I was out of the office. It did still however cause my income to drop during those times regardless since most of my sales are still made personally by me. My fiancé doesn’t necessarily have a lot of systems in place however.  He has one or two people in his office that he can ask to do things for him if necessary but not too much automated marketing or structure to consistently bring in more leads.

I wanted to talk about this today because if anything, I mean anything, happens to you or someone you love (not to mention unforeseen issues due to mother nature or home repairs), you could be faced with challenges with continuing to generate leads, sales and revenue. I want to make sure YOU are prepared as much as possible just in case. Trust me, do this now, don’t put it off; you just never know what’s going to happen or when and life is too short too to not enjoy it as much as possible now. Systems will do that for you also.

One thing I see that is pretty common with the women business owners that I work with is that they don’t always feed their own needs and desires first. I believe this is hurting your business if this is you.

The key is to connect more with yourself and your needs so that you can be your best self in your business and attract more clients. It works if you dedicate time to working on yourself.

I’ve been guilty of this too at times, no one is perfect. But these days I’m relatively aware of watching out for this on a weekly basis and I urge you to be as well. Let me give you some examples of what I want and need to fill my tanks and then I want you to think about what you need or want to fill yours.

First of all, I did this exercise one time at a self-development workshop where we were focused on learning more about what men think (this was when I was single and looking).

It made me realize the four tanks I had to fill each day and what things I could do to fill them. It’s hard to explain in a short article like this but these tanks involved basically characteristics or values that I held high (mine are Love, Faith, Passion and Happiness). There was a pretty involved process I went through to discover these, they didn’t just come to me. In fact, it was curious to me that none of them involved making money or having wealth?

I’m the type of person though that really requires eight hours sleep every night in order to be my fully, loving and focused self. I also require creativity time during my day, not every day but most days. Time in which I can record a video training or tip, express myself on an interview or teleclass, write an article or think up new ideas and implement them. I also require time with my immediate family and loved ones, specifically my fiancé who is my best friend and fun to talk to. All of these things make me happy and feed my soul so that I’m more motivated to do what I love every day and get up taking inspired action.

I don’t think that’s too much to ask for frankly, do you?

What do you want or need to really be YOUR BEST SELF?

Areas to Consider When Connecting With Yourself:

  • Self worth / Confidence
  • Self Care / Health
  • Relationships / Friendships
  • Environment / Surroundings / Home
  • Love / Passion / Purpose
  • Faith / Spirituality
  • Values / Must Haves

Don’t undervalue what you really need, list out what’s important to you and what would FEED you and your soul, your passion, your purpose more, etc. What tanks do you think you need to fill? What activities will help you fill them?

Then go to your calendar and figure out how to fit it all in – seriously go do this now or you never will.

The April Jumpstart Your Marketing & Sales Summit was a blast and a huge success for not only me but the majority of the attendees – I couldn’t be more pleased and grateful!

As for the April event, we kicked it off with our 1/2 day mastermind where 17 highly motivated entrepreneurs shared and collaborated with one another to generate big ideas, strategies and even new programs or offerings right on the spot!

That evening we held a very informal networking reception in the bar of the hotel, all attendees were welcome to attend. I love to throw some kind of pre-party at my events so that attendees can get to know each other on a more informal and casual basis. It helps to create the positive, loving environment that’s needed for this type of training and transformation experience.

The 3 days of in-depth training consisted of high energy engagement, deep-dive into the necessary content to help you grow your business and the interactive growth that happens in the hot seats and sharing times.

Two of the three days in the evening we held a panel discussion where panelists shared their expertise on a certain topic but attendees were invited to share and participate as well.

Thursday night was the “Create Your Amazing Life” panel and boy did we shake things up!

What was supposed to be an evening of sharing and expanding yourself for more self-care, love, better relationship development, health and wellness, balance and more was kicked off by of course my boyfriend Jason proposing on stage during his introduction! Whoo hoo!

We felt like the paparazzi was around us with all the cameras going off and then of course I had to get back to leading the discussion! But it was a very special evening for all for sure. Click here to see the blog post all about the proposal!

The second panel on night two was the “Create Your Expert Platform” panel discussion. During this panel we discussed all sorts of “next step” or advanced types business and marketing strategies such as becoming an author, getting publicity, holding your own live event, being a host of your own radio show and more! All of which I teach as things you would do after you have a more smooth-running, moneymaking business model in place.

Day one and two paved the way for your road to success by laying the foundation of what to do in your business and day three showed you how to systematize, automate or delegate most of it too so many attendees could go home knowing some things were already off their plate!

Have you got stacks of these around YOUR office?

Massive networking and consistent, relationship marketing follow up are the two main things that I did from day one, 12 years ago, (and still do!) to build a very successful and profitable business.

If you are attending networking events at least a couple times a month or more and/or speaking or being an exhibitor at live events then I would venture to guess that you are NOT doing enough follow up. NO ONE DOES!

You are most likely missing out on thousands of dollars every single month due to your lack of follow up (and following up in many different ways too, not just one or two). I find (and so do many of my clients who are using my Follow Up System) that the majority of sales (MAJORITY!!) I make from each event I attend happen in the follow up process! Yes, it’s true.

What I’ve also found though is that entrepreneurs just won’t take the time to do their follow up (the way it needs to be done). They/YOU just don’t take the time.

So where do you start?  What do you do to market and grow your business?

There are so many options right? It’s possible even, that you’re somewhat overwhelmed right now just thinking about it.

Well, I like to start with ‘free first, then pay’ options…how does that sound to you? The reason being is that typically these days people need to experience you somehow or in a couple different ways before they will sign up, buy or pay for anything you have to offer. It’s not always the case but usually. That’s why we give free gifts on our websites, do free talks and teleseminars and why we write articles on our blogs and more.

I usually recommend focusing your marketing in 3 different types of marketing, they are:

1.  Database Marketing

2.  Referral Source Marketing

3.  New Business Marketing

The reason I break it down like this is because most small business owners focus most of their efforts in only one area, going after new business, and they forget or choose not to do much to market to their databases or referral sources which are the easiest to go after!  (Let me explain each and give you some examples.)

Your Database Marketing is marketing to everyone and anyone you know….regardless of your relationship.  This includes your hair dresser, dentist, neighbors and friends.  More than likely everyone you know could be a potential prospect or referral source (but we’ll talk about referral sources separately for this example).

Database Marketing needs to be done via email, mail, phone, social media, in person visits possibly and maybe even fax if you or your customers still use it – the more ways the better!  The goal is to be on top of mind with everyone you know (and those you add to your database too) all the time so if they or someone they know needs your products or services, you are the first person they think of.
