Designing a New Website or Revamping Your Current One
There are SO many things to know these days about designing a new website so they will actually WORK FOR YOU rather than just sit there doing nothing, in regards to bringing you more clients, visitors and referral sources.
You MUST LEARN what it takes to really have a successful, well-traveled and converting website or I’m afraid you might continue to be the “best kept secret” in your industry for years to come!The good news is that there are people like me who will spoon feed you ONLY what you need to know about your website design, functionality and content, and not give you too much of the “really techy info that bogs your brain or mind”.
Now, I’ve not been that techy minded or savvy, especially when I first started my business. I was resistant to learning new things, especially if they had to do with technology. But I learned that these online platforms and systems are the #1 thing that helps me reach a lot more potential prospects every month AND be able to manage all the leads I get (online and offline). I taken a lot of time over the years to learn about designing a new website.
I’ve embraced the fact that I need to continually brush up on my techy knowledge and learn more efficient systems or I’ll never get where I want to get in my business. Plain and simple and you need to also.

In Part 1 of this article, I covered what marketing really is and how to jumpstart your business and marketing….
Beyond all of that however, where should you start marketing or building a following?
If your goal is to generate cash pretty quickly then I recommend you start marketing in two areas:
Your Database – This should be everyone and anyone you “have access to” or often termed: your circle of influence. This could be anyone you know, do business with, are involved with inside organizations you belong to and even your social media connections. This does not mean you go add them all to an email newsletter database however but consider everyone you know and have access to as potential prospects or referral sources.
Depending on who they are and how you know them then, depends on the approach you use to connect and nurture that relationship. (or market to them)
In Person – You’ll want to meet as many new people as possible and for most small businesses, that means getting out in person where your ideal prospects hang out. When you meet people in person, it’s faster to build relationships where they like, trust and connect with you. Online marketing and connecting typically takes a lot longer.
If your goal is to build the business the right way from the start and you aren’t in urgent need of making money quickly necessarily then here is where I would start:
Building your online presence – This is where most people will go to find out more about you, your products and services, your company, your philosophy, your values, your team, and more. These days people will make buying decisions based on your online presence, especially if they haven’t met you yet in person first.
Your online presence consists of all of the following:
Videos of you
Your social media profiles and pages
Your personality online and what you post or write (or the lack of)
Google searches on your name or company name
Your reviews or testimonials (or lack of)
From the online presence comes “What you’re selling” – You must make it very clear on what you’re selling or no one will buy much less request more information.
This includes knowing more about and doing well with:
Your unique selling preposition (what makes you different)
Making it easy for people to understand what you’re doing, how to get information, how to contact you, how will what you offer benefit them.
I could go on and on here as you can tell but the point is to start marketing now.
Then if you’re not exactly sure what to do to market your business or get started building a following, building relationships and nurturing those relationships over time (which is crucial), then you need to ask for help from a professional.
There is way too much to know or learn about marketing, it would take years trying to figure it all out on your own, why not get a clear plan of action quickly from someone you can trust? It will help give you that jumpstart you want and need and save you a heck of a lot of time and money doing the wrong things.

No matter what industry you’re in or which products and services you sell, you have to be a salesperson in your business. Stop trying to avoid selling.
I realize some of you don’t want to be too salesy or annoying in your approach but you may not be doing enough to even get a sale if you’re too worried about that.
Are you the type of business owner who:
Tells people you meet “If you’re interested, give me a call” rather than “I see you’re interested, how about we set up a time to talk about it?” or something similar to take the prospect to the next step.
Hands out your business card or brochure to a person you’re having a conversation with to explain what you do rather than talks to them or asks them questions to find out their interest level.
Gets someone in a free consult or free initial call with a prospect and then end up coaching them or giving them solutions so they’re “full” and aren’t interested in buying more.
There are a whole host of other actions or “non-actions” a wishy washy salesperson does or doesn’t do but those are some of the biggies I see with my clients.
This isn’t going to get you the success or revenue that you’re hoping for in your business however. You can be much more aggressive with your sales conversations and actions without being pushy or salesy. It’s very easy if you learn how and you especially learn “what to say”.
I have to work on this myself too, I’m not the perfect salesperson. But I reach out and invest in myself and to hone my sales skills often. Many entrepreneurs DO NOT.

Can you believe that on the day Jason and I were so excited for him to finally be done with his radiation and chemo appointments (yesterday)….that immediately following his last treatment, he was in so much pain they rushed him to the ER and found he had blood clots in his lungs! Excuse my language here but What The Frig!
We are so disappointed mind you that this stupid cancer journey is not yet behind us. I know it will never be behind us with all the regular appointments you have to do following and for the rest of your life but geez already, give him a break.
I’m sorry to be such a Debbie Downer today on you but you know what one of the nurses said yesterday….just talking out loud to us in the room….she said “Well everybody gets some kind of cancer these days, it’s just so common”. So be prepared. Don’t focus on it of course but get your business ready, and get prepared “just in case” you can’t work at it daily like you are now. Plan for the “What If” and be grateful when nothing happens.

Don’t get sucked in to someone telling you that you should do it this way or that way and having that be the ONLY way you make money or grow your business. ONE way doesn’t work for the majority trust me.
I wanted to share a few of my “working remotely” resources and tips – this is a picture of me working at one of Jason’s treatments in the cancer center this week. It’s freezing in there, sweats are in order even though its 100 degrees out!
Working Remotely Resources:
Logmein.com – I love this resource because it allows me to access my desktop from anywhere and any computer. I realize many of you work from your laptop and hence when you travel you take your laptop and your whole business and files with you, that’s great. But for those of you who have a desktop computer at your home/office (I have a big giant Mac), you can’t take that with you when you travel OR in case you have to go back and forth to the hospital or somewhere else and work on a daily basis, it’s nice to be able to access your files from anywhere. I bring my laptop along but then I don’t have to double up all my files or move too much over to my laptop and it stays pretty secure without my entire business on it. It’s like $79/year I believe so not that expensive.
Also as a division of Logmein. they offer a screen share software called join.me. I use this now for my webinars, like the one I’m doing tomorrow. It’s not a “perfect” system for doing webinars but I don’t do that many at this time so it’s good enough. Plus I can use it with clients to show them how to do stuff on social media or their websites, etc. It’s $19/mo.
Carbonite.com – This is the remote data backup system that I use on my desktop to protect my files. I highly recommend you get an online backup system because let’s face it, you won’t manually back up your files as much as you hope to so it’s better to be protected. And for like $59/year it’s a super good deal. It runs while I’m sleeping too so no down time. Here’s the site to go check it out.
Filezilla.com – This is an FTP free software that I use to upload files to my website so that I can just use a link for someone to be able to access them. If you want to have someone be able to download or view a PDF or listen to an MP3 file for example as a freebie you may have offered or as part of a paid product or program, you will most likely want to upload that file to your website so it can be linked. The days of attaching files to an email are long gone, especially if that file is many Megabites large which MP3 files are.
WordPress.org – The .org is different than the .com apparently, I learned this from my website techy team. The .org templates allow you a lot more flexibility, functionality and user friendly layouts with opt in capabilities and so much more. Don’t get sucked in to the free templates, invest in your website, it’s actually YOUR MOST IMPORTANT MARKETING TOOL besides yourself! What I love about my wordpress websites is that I can login from anywhere and update a page or add a post, it’s amazing.
Did you know that I have an entire Website and Techy Services Department in my Company that you can utilize? It’s for that jumpstart you need with your own site or the new site you need but aren’t sure who to have build it for you. We’re the best team on the internet because you get me – sales and marketing strategist and big picture website planning PLUS my extremely knowledgable website and techy specialists. We typically only handle clients sites or ezines, social media work, etc. that we’re already working with but ask me more about it if you’re in the market right now, we might be a very good fit for you!

P.P.S. – Because the truth is that most of you need to be doing almost everything I share with you in my videos and newsletters yet you’re ignoring me, hiding your head in the sand, or you just don’t open the emails because you don’t want to know. And frankly this is what’s hurting your business.

But even better than that is the bigger impact you make on more people in this world.

One thing I see that is pretty common with the women business owners that I work with is that they don’t always feed their own needs and desires first. I believe this is hurting your business if this is you.
I’ve been guilty of this too at times, no one is perfect. But these days I’m relatively aware of watching out for this on a weekly basis and I urge you to be as well. Because what I know is that if you’re not completely happy in your personal life right now or sometimes, it will affect the success and running of your business.
In addition to feeding your own soul, you also need to be prepared – mentally and physically, for starting, growing and running an efficient, consistent, moneymaking business.
Other things that affect your success and even your profits are:
Having people in your life that don’t fully support you – they could discourage you, drain your valuable entrepreneurial energy or worse, bad mouth you and what you’re striving to accomplish.
Doubting yourself, your abilities, how much you’re worth, and thinking you’re not good enough – these limiting beliefs most likely stem from a childhood experience but you can shift them now, wherever you are in your life if you decide to.
Lack of clarity around what you’re doing from the big picture all the way down to the nitty gritty details of what you need to be doing every single day in your business.
Not having a clear plan for your business start up, its growth, generating consistent revenue, expansion ideas, team development and/or management and even time management so you don’t end up doing it all yourself.
Lack of accountability – entrepreneurs are typically the creative types and most of us need someone other than ourselves to stay on top of us, our weekly activities, project management and even completion of projects so we stay on task.
The know-how – just because you decided to become an entrepreneur or start selling products and services of some kind doesn’t mean you know HOW to do that and HOW to be successful and most importantly profitable. Get the training and insight you need before it’s too late and you have to go back and get a JOB!
So, where do you need to make some shifts? In your personal life, the business or with your own headtrash? Try to evaluate yourself, really sit with these ideas and points and see if something could improve. See if you need to have a conversation with a loved one. See if you need to get together a better plan.
Maybe it’s time to shift!
After all, as entrepreneurs, we always need to be open to evolution, especially evolution of ourselves.
Which types of business shifts do you need?
A better support system
Increased confidence to charge what you’re worth and get it
Clarity around what you’re selling and to whom
Focused action plan or marketing plann to bring in the money
Accountability plan to stay on track of tasks and the marketing
More training around being a more productive and profitable entrepreneur
Don’t undervalue what you really need, list out what’s missing and see where you can make a shift.

One of the biggest challenges for small business owners when it comes to their website is writing the content for it all.
This is why sometimes it takes you months and months to get your website up or why your site doesn’t do much for you when it is live.
The content for your website is such a critical part yet you spend so little time on it usually because you don’t know what to do.
I want to give you a quick guide on how to write better content for your website and basically for many of your marketing materials as well.
First of all, it’s important to remember that YOUR WEBSITE IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT MATRKETNG TOOL. You need to treat it as such.
When done right, your website can bring you more leads than you could ever generate yourself any other way. The key is to develop a strategy for your website and how it will fit in with all the other marketing and sales processes that you have (or need to have) in place. Then when you have the strategy, you add details that allow for more interaction, personality and functionality for you and your visitors including forms, opt in boxes, videos, links and more.
Here’s a quick 3 step process for writing content for your website including your home page, about page, all your services or sales pages and even your contact page or other pages.
First of all, you have to capture the visitor’s attention with a big bold headline on the top of EVERY page. Think about what the visitor is doing on the page you’re writing, be it the home page or the about page, etc. What is their question or concern in their mind when they click on it? Address that question or concern (in their words) on the very top in big, bold colored font. That big bold headline has to entice them enough to keep on reading. If it doesn’t, they could leave your page or your site all together right then without reading another word.
Secondly, the copy you write under the big bold headline still has to talk to the visitor’s hot buttons, what matters most to them and why they’re on your site. That means you want to still write about their concerns and questions, agitating their possible situation in regards to what you do. This is NOT yet where you talk about what you offer, do or what you sell. You still have to get them to engage in the copy more with the first few paragraphs of each page so they do feel confident that they’re in the right place, on the right site and that you could have the solution to what their need is or what they were searching for.
Finally, after you’ve interacted more, engaged more with the visitor in your copy and what matters most to them, now you can let them know that you have the solution they’ve been searching for. This is where you share more possibly about your expertise, your services/products or you take them to the next step of where you want them to go on your site. Sometimes the next step (for example on your home page) should be to just recommend they get on your email list and get your freebie up in the opt in box on the top of the page. On the home page especially is NOT normally where you want to try to sell them. The goal of your home page is to get them on your email list so you can continue to market to them in case they leave your site after that.
There’s a lot more to know about writing good content for your website but if you keep this formula in mind when doing so then you should see a much better response on your website than if you didn’t do this.

You can’t make them read paragraphs of information before they know if they’re on the right site or not; they won’t do that. They won’t call you either the first time they land on your site, you have to get them to engage immediately with video, forms, and other interactive functionality and headlines, etc.
Do I ask visitors to take action on EVERY page of my website for something I want them to do? You have to invite them to engage with you, sign up for something, send in information, buy something, etc. If you don’t ASK them or entice them on the pages they won’t take action, plain and simple.
Do I have a clear and easy way for someone to get FREE information or resources IMMEDIATELY when they land on my site? On ANY page of my site? Building a list of interested prospects should be your #1 goal of your website. Most websites I look at do not do this effectively.
