The number of people you have in your database is the number of people you have access to market to on a regular basis so your #1 goal in your business should be to build your database and set up a consistent, frequent system for marketing and following up with them.

If this isn’t your #1 goal, you’re missing out on a ton of sales.

If you’re not networking (online and in person in some way), you’re missing out on a ton of sales.

Here is a quick networking and follow up worksheet and guide for you:

1. Have you defined your target market? Are you sure? Who is your ideal client? Describe them.

2. How many people are in your current database (everyone you know)?

3. How many people do you want to add to that this year? Do you want to double it? What’s your goal?

4. Where can you go to build your list where your ideal client is hanging out (brainstorm)?

a. women’s organizations
b. chamber of commerce events
c. industry association meetings
d. membership functions
e. local or national conferences and workshops
f. online social networking websites, blogs and forums

5. How to best prepare yourself for networking:

a. research events and block them on your calendar every month (make sure you’re consistent and go back often to ones that are good)
b. practice your 10-30-60 second commercials
c. bring marketing materials, always have them in your car and on hand so you never run out.
d. arrive on time and allow enough time after for continued networking – don’t rush your stay.
e. be prepared to give to others, ask questions of others and not just talk about yourself.

6. Develop an easy follow up system you can follow each week or delegate it to an assistant so it gets done!

I realize that when you first started your business you may not have thought about EVERYTHING that would be involved with running a successful business, right?

You had a passion and interest in a particular product or service that you could offer and that you believed others would want. But there’s a LOT more to running a successful business than what meets the eye.

Here are some very common mistakes I see my clients and others I meet making every month in their businesses. The ones who end up being successful are the ones who REALIZE this and take steps to FIX their issues.

What mistakes are YOU making?

1. Not marketing to everyone you know
2. Not having a consistent follow up marketing system
3. Being afraid of networking and not learning how to overcome it
4. Thinking if they build it, they will come
5. Cutting back on marketing first when times are tough
6. Lack of understanding of what types of marketing will work for their business and what won’t
7. Planning too much and not DOING anything
8. Giving up too soon
9. Not estimating enough start up costs and expenditures
10. Letting their own opinions about marketing get in the way of what they decide to do to market their business
11. Thinking they can do it all themselves and need to
12. Not asking for help
13. Spending too much time on things that are not making them money
14. Not getting professional help from the start with certain aspects of their business
15. Compromising quality and professionalism to save money
16. Not really knowing and understanding their target market
17. Not knowing their competition or following them too closely without knowing if what they’re doing is working or not
18. Making decisions in their marketing based on what types of marketing THEY like or don’t like to be targeted with
19. Not continually learning about new techniques and practices
20. Not keeping up with technology to better build your business
21. Thinking that marketing = expensive

Are you doing everything you should be in the marketing of your business or is there something that’s slipping through the cracks that could bring you a ton more money?

Are you spending your dollars wisely or hap hazzardly to which ever sales rep walks in the door each day?

Do you have an actual marketing plan?

These are some of the questions you want to be asking yourself AND THEN – figure out how to fix this so you are making SMART MARKETING DECISIONS.

If you’re like most small business owners, you get so busy working IN your business that when it’s busy, you don’t concentrate much on marketing and advertising. In fact many clients I’ve spoken with have said they often tell their advertising sales reps “just run the same ad as last month” when they call for new ad copy. They do this because they don’t have time to think of what to do next.

But if you PLAN out your ads ahead of time, making sure your headlines, offers and messages are timely AND that they accurately and effectively will make your target market take notice and act on your ad then they will be much more effective and give you better results.
Or when you have clients you don’t make time to market for new ones until those ones are gone; then you wonder “where did they all go? I’d better do some marketing”. This isn’t smart marketing either because then you’ll be so desperate to get new clients you’ll do anything and quick!

Preparing a marketing plan is your first step. You might need to conduct some market research to determine who your ideal client is, what their needs are, how you can meet their needs, where you can find them, how you will reach them, and the daily activities you need to do to keep your funnel full. If you know the answers to these questions then you’re ahead of the game (BUT ONLY AS LONG AS YOU ARE REALISTIC WITH THOSE ANSWERS). Some of these activities may include networking, speaking, advertising, seminars, teleclasses, and e-zines. All of these are active forms of marketing that take your time, unless you can delegate some of the activities or automate them.
