Are you wondering how becoming a speaker will generate more business for you or why it’s such an important marketing strategy?
Are you hesitant to really put yourself out there because you think you’re “too new” or maybe speaking on stages and even online scares you a bit?
Have you been trying to get yourself some speaking opportunities (I call them gigs) but you’re not having the best of luck getting booked?
Well, I’ll tell you; I get most of my coaching clients and even most of my paying customers for other products and programs from speaking gigs.
Here are Ways Speaking can be Helpful for You in your Business:
- You can speak in person at a conference, workshop or business event.
- You can speak over the phone or Skype on a teleclass, radio show, or podcast.
- You can speak on a webinar or video conference (like Zoom) these days.
- You can speak on video, either on YouTube or Facebook Live and more.
- You can even host your own event – in person or online, that’s speaking too.
Any way you slice it, being a speaker allows YOU to be THE EXPERT in your industry or on your topic. It brings credibility to what you do, who you are and it allows people to experience you quicker than if they were to just read a page or two on your website.
Yes, I realize that there are others who speak on the topic you do. And they may have been in business for longer than you. But that doesn’t mean that they are the expert and you are not or that you shouldn’t also share what YOU know. It’s the opposite. Give your varying opinion I say. Share what you know and how you do it different.
Too many people get caught up and don’t take action because they think that their thing is already being done in the marketplace. But the marketplace is a HUGE SPACE these days with the Internet and social media sites. You have the potential to reach millions and billions of people around the planet if you know what you’re doing and you take enough action.
When people get to hear you, or watch you for a longer period of time than just a quick hello or introduction, it gives them more of a sense of what you do, how you can help them, and they can make a more informed decision on if or how they want to work with you or at the very least, find out more. I highly recommend adding speaking to your overall marketing strategies if you’re a small business owner or sales professional of any kind.
I want to share the 6-step system that I teach in my Jumpstart Yourself as a Dynamic Speaker Training Course. Some of this may be a refresher for you, but for some, it may not.
Step 1: Determine WHO you’ll talk to and what do they want to hear. Ask yourself “What are you an expert in? or Who is your target market and where will we find groups of them? What do they care about exactly that relates somewhat to what you do?“
Step 2: Develop your speaking topics and speaker sheet. It’s important to BE PREPARED for speaking opportunities at all times if you expect to get any. You want to have a professional speaker sheet ready to email someone who wants to book you that includes your topics, descriptions, bullets of what they’ll learn, your bio, picture and contact information at the very least.
Step 3: Strategize on where to get gigs. You’ll need to build a list of potential events, organizations or meetings that you can speak for locally, nationally and virtually. There are easy ways to find places but you need to do your due diligence if you want to get booked.
Step 4: Craft your presentations. It’s important to create your speaking presentations so that they are educational, informative, memorable and they make the audience take the action you want them to take at the end. Whether you’re making a sales pitch at the end or not, how you design your talk is crucial to your success.
Step 5: Design your accompanying marketing materials. Often times you’ll want handouts, flyers, order forms or table display materials for when you attend a live speaking event (as well as virtual – what to do online). Again, if you’re not prepared with these things then you’ll most likely waste your time doing the speaking in the first place.
Step 6: Following up after a speaking gig. Most speakers don’t do this well at all and it could be more important than what you do AT the event itself. Developing a kick-butt follow up plan for after an event will provide ongoing lead generation and sales.
Hopefully this gives you some ideas on what you need to work on to get started speaking more or getting booked more.
Remember though, speaking is just ONE type of marketing strategy that you may want to do in your small business. Generally, you need to do 5-15 marketing strategies every month in order to maximize your potential.
