What does JUMPSTART mean to you?

It just came to my attention from the last email I sent out to my subscribers about my Jumpstart Your Biz in a Weekend event (I got dozens and dozens of people replying) that many have the thinking that: “I don’t need a jumpstart” because…

  • I’ve been in business for 5, 10 or more years and things are going good
  • I’m too busy, I don’t need clients right now
  • I’m slowing down and trying to stop working so hard I certainly don’t want to get a jumpstart
  • I need to scale my biz, not give it a jumpstart
  • I need an exit strategy, not give it a jumpstart

Well… great!! Those situations in fact ARE also things that I believe you still need a “jumpstart” with. At least that’s how I look at it, let me explain.

I have a LOT of clients who are in these situations, I don’t work with just new business owners you know…

I work with seasoned business owners too. For the newer businesses, getting a jumpstart makes sense to a lot of you, for obvious reasons I think.

However, for my seasoned clients we do things like: 

  • Develop more systems (online and off) to help you manage your business easier and work less in it but ON it
  • Create systems for more nurturing of your database for more referrals, automation, reminders or upsells so sales are made while you sleep!
  • Changing your offerings, raising rates or adding other income streams that are more leveraged perhaps so you don’t have to work so many hours to make the money you’re making – changing it up, doing things differently takes planning, strategy, support and even bigger ideas than some people may generate on their own.
  • Adding team members so you can do less yourself and have more free time for vacations, family or just plain working less with less possibility of potential burnout. Plus, having more team allows you to expand, grow, exit, franchise, hire a manager to run things, be a better CEO.
  • Upleveling or evolving your brand – creating a new website and direction with new inspiration due to change or something that recently happened in your life OR that you WANT to happen but there’s no room for it to the way you’re going. I worked with a fitness trainer once who was holding classes at a gym and also doing mobile training 1on1 and when we changed her business model to doing virtual fitness training and having an online membership and community she could actually stop working so much, she met a man and had two kids!
  • Upleveling yourself as an expert with a book, speaking, more worldwide exposure, hosting a podcast, developing a movement, hosting live events and your exit strategy even. These are things we often want once we’ve got a good book of business already but there’s no time to even think about implementing all of this when you’re IN the business day after day.

Being busy IN the business isn’t good if something does end up happening that could take you out of the day to day sales and client interaction, right?

What would happen if you or someone you loved got sick, hurt or worse right now? 

Would income still be coming into your business regularly even if you didn’t have to concentrate on it?

The “what if” Factor is real. Do you have a plan in case something happens? This is what a lot of seasoned biz owners are NOT prepared for – how to make their business run and make money if THEY did not have to be there every day.

  • What if you had to go take care of a loved one for a month?
  • What if you had to have a surgery and were out for 3 weeks on pain killers?
  • What if your kid/husband/mom/fill in the blank couldn’t work or got hurt/sick and it was just YOU to take care of them?

None of us are getting younger, more stuff happens to us and the ones we love as we get older no matter how hard we work at preventing it.

So much stuff has happened to me and those I love since I started my business – what makes you think nothing like this will ever happen to you?

  • I’ve been through a divorce and also another really horrible breakup with a boyfriend, that made it hard to concentrate on work throughout the whole process (for 4 months!).
  • My dad died and as an only child had to fly to his home multiple times, deal with all his “stuff” and settle his estate over the course of 12 months and $23,000, taking care of everything through probate.
  • I’ve had two total hip replacement surgeries – all in ONE year, out for 3-6 weeks each time, thinking I could work from the couch but not realizing what recovery really took out of me, wasn’t able to.
  • I’ve had a toe surgery another year, a really bad sprained ankle another year and now have knee issues (Oh and speaking is my main biz strategy, right? Hard to do on crutches or brace.).
  • My current husband went through cancer the year he proposed. We had to postpone our wedding a year and I had to spend half my days all week long for over 8 weeks in the chemo center cutting my work time in half if not less as I was a full-time caregiver. (Thank God he’s healthy now!)
  • My mom fell 3 times in one year and I had to fly to her a couple times for surgeries, and to get her set up with in home health care.

I’m sure there was more than that but those are the biggies… beyond that I’ve had multiple website changes and team changes that have cost me tens of thousands of dollars and months of delay in my marketing.

You seriously can’t wait to get more SYSTEMS set up in your business. 

Stop thinking that you’ll focus on this “later” because you’re “too busy or too ___” now.

This is just something to chew on and maybe a “reality check” for some of you too. 😉

I don’t want to see ANYTHING bad happen to you or anyone you love but IF IT DOES I want you to be ready for it. I also want to see you making a LOT more money doing what you love!!

THIS IS WHAT HAVING A JUMPSTART MEANS TO ME.

This is not a squirrel or a bright shiny object. Instead it’s what most people I see need, including myself all the time! A jumpstart somewhere…

Whether you are a NEW business or a SEASONED business, you need to be SMART about your business.

The good news is that there are people like me who will spoon feed you ONLY what you need to know about your website design, functionality and content, and not give you too much of the “really techy info that bogs your brain or mind”.

Now, I’ve not been that techy minded or savvy, especially when I first started my business. I was resistant to learning new things, especially if they had to do with technology. But I learned that these online platforms and systems are the #1 thing that helps me reach a lot more potential prospects every month AND be able to manage all the leads I get (online and offline). I taken a lot of time over the years to learn about designing a new website.

I’ve embraced the fact that I need to continually brush up on my techy knowledge and learn more efficient systems or I’ll never get where I want to get in my business. Plain and simple and you need to also.

I’m talking about the marketing before the sales process – the lead generation and follow-up to get your prospects into your sales process; your sales funnel.

As many of you know, I talk about marketing a lot. Are you in the Right Niche, are you saying the Right Things, are you Expressing Yourself according to your Purpose?

When all of these are in alignment and the Monetization piece is in place, you’ll find your business will thrive instead of finding yourself in debt in a couple of years.

Do you know how to Monetize Your Mission?

In the older business models, you had a product or service that you exchanged for money. It’s different in today’s world!  Now you have to factor into that exchange how to make people feel they are contributing to the greater good. Contributing a percentage of sales to charity alone is no longer adequate.

I talked online recently with Nicola Grace, The Mission Mentor and business coach, about how to Jumpstart Your Marketing to get clients and customers. We shared tips about marketing strategies, developing your marketing mojo, the value of a mentor and so more more!!

As many of you know, I’ve worked in various forms of marketing and sales for most of my life. Through the years, I realized there were many entrepreneurs and business owners who LOVED what they were doing, but didn’t know all of the aspects of running a profitable business.

Nicola has also been in marketing and sales for quite a while with over 20 years of online marketing. She began doing contract work while in London for companies like Virgin Records and other big companies with big marketing budgets. This experience exposed her to how the “big guys” handled their marketing with the large budgets they had. But most Solopreneurs have to take a different approach because they don’t have that kind of marketing budgets that large corporations have.

Today online marketing is a MUST. You just can’t avoid it anymore, but offline marketing is an effective way to compliment your online marketing. Offline marketing works best to really connect and engage with people with different ways and people like that personal touch!

Mindset is also critical to the success of your business. You have to be open to opportunities. Another problem is see is business owners who don’t use effective marketing strategies because they don’t personally like them.

Do you really know who owns those photos, images or even some of the copy from the internet that you grab and use on your website? 

I’ve been sued before BIG time for using copyrighted content copied online unknowingly on a Google search… to the tune of $2000! Yep!

And I couldn’t get out of it even with an attorney! And I took the images right down when asked….they were out for my blood I tell you!

Listen up folks, you could be making this HUGE MISTAKE in your marketing, on your website and on your social sites too.

Barb is a Certified Copyright Manager and plain expert in what you CAN and CANNOT do legally online with photos, content, videos, music and more. Plus she shows you how to PROTECT YOUR OWN COPY AND IMAGES so they don’t get used by other people randomly too.

Here’s what Barb wanted me to share briefly with you….

You need just the right image to make your webpage, blog, brochure “pop.”  Of course you turn to the Internet and do a search; there are hundreds of great photos to choose from.  You find the perfect one: Copy…Paste…Done!  All set… GOOD TO GO!

Right?   Maybe…maybe not.  Content on the ‘net is eligible for copyright protection; it belongs to some one.  ASSUME that any content you find online is copyrighted, until you can determine otherwise.  Using others’ content without permission can result in some “unpleasant surprises:” letters from attorneys informing you that it has come to their attention that you used IMAGE X without a license. The letter may demand that you “cease and desist”—stop using the image and remove it from your website, blog, brochure, etc. Or it may demand payment of licensing fees. This could even lead to very expensive and time-consuming litigation.  (No, “giving credit” to the source is not enough.)

What would that mean for You and Your Business?

Rest assured that there are ways to locate free or “almost free” images that you can use legally. I can help you find them.

I was inspired to write this article today because of a new coaching client that I have who was fearful of signing up to work with me because she’s invested before and not followed through.

She said she was a conference junkie and loved to learn. She told me she had invested thousands of dollars in other people’s programs, products and events but still wasn’t where she thought she’d be in her business by now.

Why is that? Well, maybe you’ve been here before, I know I have.

We feel like we don’t know enough yet or we still aren’t sure what to do because possibly we’ve invested in the wrong types of trainings, not ones that fit OUR learning or implementation style.

After all, implementation is the key right? We have to hold ourselves accountable (or get that accountability from a coach or mastermind) to making sure we do the things we need to do in our business to get more clients, make more money and grow the business.

But it’s not easy to hold yourself accountable or come to group calls and get what you need.  know because that didn’t work for me either.

But one thing you want to remember is that you have YOUR GENIUS and that’s what you are awesome at. Others will hire you for that genius and you’ll be the expert no matter how new to the business you are. You don’t have to act like the newbie. You probably already know more than you need to know in order to start getting clients and really helping them through whatever transformation they need.

If you’re not a coach and you need more training in your ‘craft’ ok, it’s possible. But don’t use that as an excuse to put off the marketing and sales. For most of you, you can make money now.

It just may be time to STOP LEARNING and START IMPLEMENTING!

Don’t hide behind that one last conference. Apply what you’ve learned and get it done!

If you need help with the actual doing of it all then THAT’s what you want to find support with, but not the learning of the thing. You most likely know that and know what to do but you just aren’t doing it.

I have people tell me all the time this is true when I point it out to them on a call or at an event. It’s not always what you WANT to hear but it could be what you NEED to hear.

STOP LEARNING and START IMPLEMENTING!

Get help with the implementation piece if you need to but put down the audios, CDs and stop registering for the free webinars (for right now if this is you and you know it is). Just dive in and do it. Build that website, write that copy, do those blog posts, get that home page video done, develop that talk, go reach out to book yourself as a speaker, write that book, plan out your event….whatever is weighing on you to get done or whatever is your next step in jumpstarting your business, just do it!
