What Does a Vending Machine Have to Do with Your Marketing Message?
Are you able to change up your message like you can click a button on a vending machine and get a different snack?
I used this analogy today with a client. She felt confused and unclear about her message, what she was saying to people she met out at networking events and the overall message too about what she speaks about (she’s a speaker).
I personally, change up my message all the time, depending on who I’m speaking to, whether it’s one person or a group, whether it’s a 30 second commercial or a speaking gig.
The message I may have speaking to a group of mom entrepreneurs will definitely be different than the message I would have with a group of authors or writers as would it also be different with a group of professionals that have a JOB who are looking to start their own business.
All three different groups of people (or individuals with the same scenario frankly) will have different interests, problems, questions and solutions that they are looking for and it might actually be more like a dozen or more different types of groups or people/industries of business owners that I speak to on any given month. I don’t niche the “type” of client that I work with, I niche the “scenario” they are in with their business.
I’ll bet you run into the same thing, right? Not that you don’t want to niche what you do but you can serve more than one type of customer I’m sure.
Think about your messages then being like snacks that you’d get from a vending machine. When in front of one group, you press the button for Doritos and the Doritos fall out, when in front of a different group, you want the Oreos so you click for Oreos.
If you aren’t there yet, with the ability to be able to alter or tweak your “message” on a dime/whim then you will be. It’s something to start keeping on top of mind to practice because it’s helpful to be able to pull out one “script” so to speak for one situation and a different script for another situation.
It’s important to be able to switch your message to speak directly to the hot buttons of that specific person or group.
As someone who’s been in business for almost 17 years now, I’m really good at knowing EXACTLY what to say and when to say it to whom. I punch those darn vending machines buttons all day every day spitting out different “scripts” or messages/information to different people all the time and I’m pretty comfortable doing it. It wasn’t always this easy though. It took a lot of time and practice and tweaking my message frankly.
It also took patience and understanding of MYSELF that it was ok to do this. Sometimes people pressure you into having just ONE message and I say no. The more you can “segment” your messages to certain groups, the more response and engagement you’ll have.
Be open to the evolution of you, your business, your message, your offerings, your target audience, your vision, your goals and just be open. You’re on a journey and it will never be perfect and you will never be done. Just accept that and keep moving! You’ve got this!!

I’m sick and tired of entrepreneurs telling me they don’t like social media and don’t want to use it for marketing. Or they have very strong thoughts about keeping their personal profiles separate from their business pages. Yet, they want to make more money and get more clients! Anyway, I’m 47 years old and can’t remember any year in my life when so many horrible things happened in the US and abroad.
I’m not going to talk politics here, but I am going to talk about what we can do about all of this senseless nonsense. It seems there’s not a lot that we can do about Mother Nature, which can be scary enough, especially if something in the earth’s hemisphere or whatever has changed that’s causing all of the earthquakes, landslides, floods, hurricanes, etc.
We can’t change the fact that there are evil people in the world. However, we can fulfill our missions, goals and life purposes to the best of our abilities and AS FAST AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE!
Because when all of us good people of the world “DO GOOD” things in the world, we positively impact others in a BIG WAY. We need to focus on doing more kind things, philanthropic acts and to impact many more individuals on this planet.
But to do that though, we need funding. We can do so much more good with a lot more money behind us backing us, right?
If you are an entrepreneur who has been a bit stagnant in your business, yet you do good work…. STOP IT!
If you are in a job you hate and you KNOW you have a much bigger mission in this world then STOP “waiting until the time is right” and get out there and live your purpose now!
If you are struggling in your business, not knowing what to do next or how to do it so that YOU can LIVE YOUR TRUE CALLING…. but you aren’t reaching out for help on what to do or how to do it… STOP IT!
The world needs YOU to stand up, be stronger, be more courageous, be more confident, be more motivated and be more productive with what you’re doing so that you can make a lot more money FASTER while sharing your gifts.
If nothing else, this all has taught us that LIFE IS SHORT.

Networking is probably the single most critical thing that I’ve ever learned to do well that has impacted my business the most with more clients, more opportunities, more exposure and more fun.
The more people you know, the more referrals and repeat business you will get. The number of people you have in your database is the number of people you have access to market to on a regular basis so your #1 goal in your business should be to build your database and set up a consistent, frequent system for marketing and following up with them.
If this isn’t your #1 goal, you’re missing out on a ton of sales. If you’re not networking (online and in person in some way), you’re missing out on a ton of sales.
What are you doing to network and meet new people every single month?
Where is your target market ‘hanging out’? Are they stay-at-home moms, who spend a large majority of their time doing things with their children’s school events or sports? Do those places have meetings? Are they homeowners who might attend home shows or community meetings? Are they all realtors? Are you attending their monthly association meetings?
I go where my target market is and I do it often, both locally and nationally. I apply to be a speaker at events and conferences too for more added credibility and opportunity during the event. You can find out about any group and what is available online.
Now, when I’m networking, I remember to ask important questions; asking questions is a HUGE, but important step! Whenever you are nervous or not sure what to say to break the ice, ask a question. When they answer the question, follow it up with another question, and so on and so on ….until you know their whole life story.
This builds trust with the person you are speaking to, when they walk away they think you are the greatest, they like you, they want to do business with you, and they want other people to know you too (e.g., a good referral source). It really does work.
Whatever you do, you don’t want to monopolize the conversation about you, what you do or how great your products or services are; you want to make it about them. In fact the only time I talk about myself is when they ask me questions, which doesn’t always happen by the way.
I want to do business with people that genuinely want to know how I am doing, how my business is doing, or how my dog or kids are doing. I network to build long lasting relationships with people like me who I respect and admire.
Let us try to be better networkers, listeners and truehearted professionals. If we do, the world just might be a better place and we will all gain more business in the end.
