Want to Maximize Networking Events with LinkedIn?

Do you have a drawer full of business cards stacked in piles or put in a shoebox after every networking event?  Not sure what to do with all those fancy cards?  Do you pull them out of the drawer now and then and try to remember where it was you met these people?

Use these tips for maximizing who you meet at networking events using LinkedIn. You’ll love this!

1. Immediately send a connection request to each person you meet. This will ensure you stay in touch long after the networking event. I like to send a message within 24 hours of the event. Make it a standard operating procedure, you won’t forget, and your face will be fresh in their minds.

2. Send a private, custom message. Remind your connection where you met, and what you talked about. This is no time to get salesly, you want to start a relationship. Another benefit is having a history in your message box of when and where you met each contact, and what you talked about. This is useful for future conversations.

3. Attach an article that you wrote, or one you found that is helpful to your new connection. You don’t have to do this right away, you can do it in a follow up message. It shows that you are interested in supporting their businesses and gives value.

4. Make an introduction. It’s really great when you meet someone and can bring them value by making an introduction to someone they need to meet. It could be they’re looking for an accountant, a business coach, or an insurance person. Make this connection and everyone wins.

5. Endorse your connections. Endorsements help connections increase their credibility in the field they work in. It’s different than a recommendation which is another word for testimonial, I do not recommend this unless you’ve actually worked together. An endorsement is appropriate.

If you want to build influence and maximize the connections you meet, using LinkedIn is one of the best ways you can make this happen. It’s easy and it’s impressive. Stand out from the rest of the crowd and use LinkedIn to grow your relationship.

If you don’t have a customer relations management system (and even if you do) and, you didn’t ask permission for your connections to be added to your email marketing list, this is an excellent system for you to manage with ease.

Networking is probably the single most critical thing that I’ve ever learned to do well that has impacted my business the most with more clients, more opportunities, more exposure and more fun.

The more people you know, the more referrals and repeat business you will get. The number of people you have in your database is the number of people you have access to market to on a regular basis so your #1 goal in your business should be to build your database and set up a consistent, frequent system for marketing and following up with them.

networkingIf this isn’t your #1 goal, you’re missing out on a ton of sales. If you’re not networking (online and in person in some way), you’re missing out on a ton of sales.
What are you doing to network and meet new people every single month?

Where is your target market ‘hanging out’? Are they stay-at-home moms, who spend a large majority of their time doing things with their children’s school events or sports? Do those places have meetings? Are they homeowners who might attend home shows or community meetings? Are they all realtors? Are you attending their monthly association meetings?

I go where my target market is and I do it often, both locally and nationally. I apply to be a speaker at events and conferences too for more added credibility and opportunity during the event. You can find out about any group and what is available online.

Now, when I’m networking, I remember to ask important questions; asking questions is a HUGE, but important step! Whenever you are nervous or not sure what to say to break the ice, ask a question. When they answer the question, follow it up with another question, and so on and so on ….until you know their whole life story.

This builds trust with the person you are speaking to, when they walk away they think you are the greatest, they like you, they want to do business with you, and they want other people to know you too (e.g., a good referral source). It really does work.

Whatever you do, you don’t want to monopolize the conversation about you, what you do or how great your products or services are; you want to make it about them. In fact the only time I talk about myself is when they ask me questions, which doesn’t always happen by the way.

I want to do business with people that genuinely want to know how I am doing, how my business is doing, or how my dog or kids are doing. I network to build long lasting relationships with people like me who I respect and admire.

Let us try to be better networkers, listeners and truehearted professionals. If we do, the world just might be a better place and we will all gain more business in the end.

For introverts, these lead generation strategies might not appeal to you….but for me I love what I do!  Everyone needs to learn how to Work the Room at Events & Conferences to generate more leads without being annoying and salesy. You want people to talk to you, right?

I love going to events, conferences and inspiring, supporting, coaching and even converting people to become clients. Why do I go to so many live events, even if I have to travel to get to them? Because it’s the biggest form of lead generation in my business! Remember you have to do more of what works. And this works IF you know how to work the room like I do.

lead generation work the room at eventsHere are my Tips for Working the Room when you are at Networking Events & Conferences:

  1. Start with Serving – have a goal of helping others rather than finding people to buy your stuff, you will attract a lot more people to talk with.
  2. Have good Energy stay in the frame of mind that it will all work out in the end, if you give, you will get. I go in with loving energy to hold space for people who need my help and are struggling, what do your prospects need?
  3. Ask Lots of Questions stop talking about yourself unless asked, ask other questions than just “what do you do?”. To find out if someone might need my help I ask, “what are your biggest challenges in your business or marketing right now?
  4. Seek the Unknown stop sitting with people you know already (unless you invited them as your guest), move around the room at every break to meet and sit with NEW people to meet as many people as possible
  5. Provide Value if someone expresses a challenge or asks a question about something you have expertise in, help them on the spot, give them a few minutes of “free advice or resources”, not just a flyer about your services to buy first.
  6. Get the Verbal Opt In grab everyone’s business card or contact information but remember to ask them if they’d like to receive your free tips, resources, report, audio, video, etc. and get on your email list. Otherwise you cannot add them, this is a verbal opt in; do it to build your list faster and making the follow up easier
  7. Move ON! don’t hang out with the same people the whole time, there are way too many more people to meet – keep moving on. If someone won’t “let you move on” then politely introduce them to someone else and bow out of the conversation (I call that passing them off)

Other Great Strategies for you to try.

  • When Planning Travel to an Out of Town to an Event or Conference – Prepare ahead of time; check the event/conference schedule first. Then start connecting with your contacts and friends in the area to set up additional fun meetups, Tweetups (if you are holding a meetup on Twitter) and networking opportunities. You can advertise your meeting on Meetup, on Twitter, Facebook Events to name a few ways to get exposure for free. Try this the next time you go to a Conference or an out of town Event – it REALLY WORKS!
  • Hosting Networking Opportunities When I’m hosting a fun networking opportunity in the area I’m traveling to, I use Private Message to send a message to people on Facebook or LinkedIn to invite them to a networking opportunity in their area. On Facebook, simply go to business groups that are in the area of your destination. You can see all of the members of groups on Facebook, IF the group is not SECRET. Remember – you are not going to spam them with your business offerings – NO! The intent is that you want to genuinely connect with them and let them know that. You might tell them that you are hosting a business networking event in their area and would love to see them there. Of course, ask them to come and to share the information about the networking event/meetup with their connections/friends. That’s not salesy or pushy. You are attempting to connect with others in a different area. People will respond to you. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this approach – it’s one of my guerilla marketing strategies.
  • Remember Your Marketing Materials When you are attending out of town events – always bring your marketing materials, information, forms! I’ve made THOUSANDS at an event where I was attending and not speaking at, by simply being prepared with a sampling of things that I offer. This person invested $40k in one of my high end programs! So, make sure you have your marketing materials AND your order forms on your high end programs when you are attending events & conferences.
  • Regarding the Verbal Opt-In Here’s a great tip to help you get the VERBAL Opt-in Make sure to take along something to give to those you meet at Live Events, something to induce them to be on your email list. I have created a Cheat Sheet of 17 Revenue Generating Tips that I offer to those I meet who are struggling in their business. I hand these out at the time I’m talking with them in exchange for their business card(s) AND I let them know that they will be receiving additional tips and information from me because I’m going to put them on my email list! (so they can receive the tips) You can also create a CD to take along to hand out. Just make sure the person knows that you will be signing them up on your email list so you can send them whatever you’re offering that will help them. As you know, or should know, you can’t just add someone to your email list just because they’ve exchanged business cards with you. Get the verbal opt-in!

Today’s Tip – Key Things You Should be Doing When you are Networking!

Last week I explained why you should be networking more, what you need to be doing when you network and why it’s important to go to several events.  Today I’m going to talk about some key things you should be doing.  These are things I teach to my clients and with those who are in my Live Big Mastermind Group.

For those of you who have a hard time remembering all of the things you should be talking about when you meet someone at a networking event, here are some great tips.

Write a list of all of the key things you need to remember to talk about while you are networking.  Read it before you go into the event.  Or if everyone is going around the room or table making introductions, just hold your cheat sheet while giving yours.  There’s nothing wrong with that.  I always have a list of the top three things I want to talk about when I go to a networking event because my topics are always changing.  For example, I might want to talk about a live event or a teleconference I’m participating in.  I might be promoting a free coaching call with me or I want to get speaking gigs and referrals.  Your cheat sheet or list will keep you on track.  Don’t just talk about what you DO, remember to ASK for what you NEED!  

Get the Follow UP Call or Meeting Scheduled.  If you never get to the follow up call, you are probably not going to be doing business with the people you’ve just met at networking events.  So try to schedule those “get to know you” calls while you are at the networking event.  This is how you’re going to learn more about how you can help each other.  Some of these calls will turn into prospects but you want to look at people as a referral source first.  Don’t come across as desperate and too salesy!

Work the Room.  You have to work the room.  Don’t talk to any one person too long. Try to learn as much as you can about them and get their contact information and move on.  You have to do more than just handing out your information.  Why?  Because it’s likely that nothing will be done with that information.  You can’t rely solely on your marketing materials to incite someone to follow up with you.  You have to get the other person’s contact information and take the initiative to follow up with them!
