If you’re a small business owner looking to grow your business fast, then you want to get networking! Networking in person can be your fastest path to quick cash flow if you have special offers and easy YES offers.

This is the third post in the series on Networking – make sure you go read the last two posts and watch their corresponding video tips to know how to best prepare before a networking event and what to do to maximize your time during a networking event.

Networking continues to be one of my BEST sources of lead generation even now, 12 years into my business. I highly recommend it to ALL of my clients as well as their #1 marketing strategy.

But I’ve ONLY been as successful with networking as I have because I developed an EXTENSIVE and consistent follow up system! At first I had no idea that what I was doing was really a “system” or process that I did over and over again. when I realized that I put it all into a format so I didn’t have to continue recreating the wheel so to speak every time I went to an event.

And keep in mind that I follow up via email but also by mail (yes, U.S. mail), phone and now on social media sites too for some people. Email follow up these days, although free to do, is so NOT ENOUGH! Email is just not as effective as it used to be. Sorry to tell you this but you have to do MORE. Which is why you want templates, scripts and a clear system so it gets done.

Check out my Ultimate Marketing Follow Up System for more info on how you can get this!

This week’s post is video #3 (what to do AFTER the event) and the second half of my top 10 tips.

Kat’s Top 20 Networking Tips (the second 10)

  1. Don’t Feature Dump when talking to people (don’t list all your services or benefits while talking), find out what the customer/person wants or needs by asking questions first and getting them talking – LISTEN!
  2. Never “lead” with a card when you enter a room, “leave” the card or wait until someone asks you for your card.  Don’t presume everyone wants your card.  If they don’t want it, they won’t do anything with it anyways so why waste it on them?
  3. Go by to follow up with those people in person who you think could be good referral sources or customers for you and/or mail them your brochure and card too.
  4. Offer to donate raffle prizes to events – use gift baskets or purchase something from a business that you’re trying to get to refer business to you and always slip your card and brochure into the gift.  (Don’t offer as a prize a certain dollar amount or discount off your product or service, it’s not a gift then, it’s only a discount.)
  5. Offer to give a referral discount or gift to those current customers or networking contacts that refer their friends (need to brainstorm ideas on incentives and “what’s in it for them” – maybe $100 referral fee depending on your price point or a $5 Starbucks gift card?)
  6. Make arrangements with other businesses to offer their products or services to your clients/contacts for free exposure for them while allowing you to give gifts to your clients.
  7. Do anything and everything you can to get noticed
  8. Every person you network with, follow up by sending them a note, flyer or letter about how you would like to work with them and how you can help each other.  Every person you meet with about your service, send them a thank you card right away.  You want to make every relationship a WIN-WIN.
  9. Follow up on every lead no matter what within 48 hours by phone, fax or email, whichever works best for THEM.
  10. Try to help everyone you meet by referring people to their business, they will remember you and do the same for you.

The key is to just get started. Find a few events and get out there!

Kat at a WINK networking event in San Diego, Nov 2011

If you’re a small business owner looking to grow your business fast, then you want to get networking! Networking in person can be your fastest path to quick cash flow if you have special offers and easy YES offers. Sure you can network online too but you most likely won’t gain the trust and credibility as fast as you will when you meet your prospects in person, face-to-face.

Networking continues to be one of my BEST sources of lead generation even now, 12 years into my business. I highly recommend it to ALL of my clients as well as their #1 marketing strategy.

I’m not “too good” to network and go to some chicken dinner either like some coaches who’ve been in business as long as I have.

It’s all about building relationships and connecting with more of the right people. prospects and referral sources. That’s what will help you grow your business FAST!

Due to my extensive networking background, I’ve done a few videos lately on what to do before, during and after a networking event plus I put together a list of my Top 20 Networking Tips too – just for you!

This week’s post is video #2 (during the event) and the top 10 tips, then next week I’ll share video #3 (after an event) and the last 10 tips in my Top 20 List. If you want to read my 6 Steps to Networking post or watch video #1 (before an event) then click here now!

Kat’s Top 20 Networking Tips (the first 10)

  1. Always shake a hand firmly (no fishy handshakes – if you’re not sure how good yours is try it out on someone you trust and ask them)
  2. Look people in the eye, don’t look beyond them or look around when you talk to them
  3. Wear clothes with pockets in them if possible and use one pocket for your cards and one for those you collect at events
  4. Make sure to write notes on the back of every card right away for easy remembering
  5. Practice your 10 sec, 30 sec and 60 sec infomercials because all meetings and events will ask for or warrant different lengths and have different scenarios. Be prepared to change it up a little depending on the audience and remember to stick in a call to action to make them DO SOMETHING.
  6. Get a name badge so people know who you are wherever you go –  mixers, events, the store, etc. (it also adds credibility and professionalism and helps brand your image/logo), don’t rely on stickers.
  7. Build rapport and relationships with the people that you meet when networking, don’t try to sell right off the bat or expect them to use your services that first time they meet you.  People get turned off with pushy people, however don’t forget to slip in a trial close now and then.
  8. Arrive at meetings and events early and be prepared to stay late and meet those people you don’t know yet – meet and get to know EVERYONE!
  9. Don’t go to something just because you think the speaker will have valuable information for you, go to network and if the speaker turns out to be good, then that’s a bonus.
  10. Bring flyers, brochures and business cards to display or hand out at every meeting just in case it’s appropriate and acceptable to pass them out or put them on display but keep them in your vehicle for easy access so you don’t look too eager (not the biz cards, bring those in – and a pen!)

The key is to just get started. Find a few events and get out there!

The number of people you have in your database is the number of people you have access to market to on a regular basis so your #1 goal in your business should be to build your database and set up a consistent, frequent system for marketing and following up with them.

If this isn’t your #1 goal, you’re missing out on a ton of sales. If you’re not networking (online and in person in some way), you’re missing out on a ton of sales. Networking in person can be your fastest path to quick cash flow if you have special offers and easy YES offers.

Here is a quick 6 STEP networking and follow up guide for you:

  1. Have you defined your target market? Are you sure? Who is your ideal client?       Describe them.
  2. How many people are in your current database (everyone you know)? I recommend you include everyone you know within your larger database so you can call or mail something to them. However it is not good email etiquette to add just anyone to an email list, you want to make sure you’ve gotten their verbal opt in at least if you met them in person and they didn’t enter a drawing or something. Find out more about how to get the “verbal opt in” in a recent video I did here.
  3. How many people do you want to add to that this year? Do you want to double it?       What’s your goal? You should set a goal or it definitely won’t happen right? Maybe 200-400 subscribers a month? Not everyone you meet will want to get on your list.
  4. Where can you go to build your list where your ideal client is hanging out (brainstorm)?
    1. women’s or business organizations
    2. chamber of commerce events
    3. industry association meetings
    4. membership functions
    5. local or national conferences and workshops – BIG PROSPECT POOL!
    6. online social networking websites, blogs and forums
  5. How to best prepare yourself for networking:
    1. research events and block them on your calendar every month (make sure you’re consistent and go back often to ones that are good)
    2. practice your 10-30-60 second commercials
    3. bring marketing materials, always have them in your car and on hand so you never run out – INCLUDING A WAY TO SIGN A CLIENT UP ON THE SPOT! (order forms!)
    4. arrive on time and allow enough time after for continued networking – don’t rush
    5. be prepared to give to others, ask questions of others and not just talk about yourself
  6. Develop an easy follow up system you can follow each week or delegate it to an assistant so it gets done! Use email, direct mail, phone for sure and connecting on social media sites too.

Networking is just ONE way to market and promote your business to get clients however it can be the fastest path to fast cash other than by speaking which is better.

When I first started my business I went to an average of 14 networking events every single month locally. Then I followed up like crazy in many different ways and I became very top-of-mind with everyone I met.

These days, 12 years into my business, I’m still networking locally although I’m networking nationally as well. I travel to various conferences, workshops and events to speak, exhibit or attend and network. I always make the best use of my time and spend the whole time at the event too rather than just flying in for an appearance and leaving early.

The key is to just get started. Find a few events and get out there!

I hope you’ve caught the last couple articles in this series, even if you haven’t started doing video yet in your business – for marketing, your website, tips, engaging clients and more. This seriously is something you don’t want to ignore anymore. And if you’re already doing videos in your business, you may catch a few tips here that can enhance your videos, capture you more viewers and convert more paying customers!

In my business and marketing coaching business, I hear a lot of excuses as to why someone isn’t or doesn’t want to do video yet in their business. I do. I hear it all!

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a way to get around those obstacles or fears that you may have and learn how to maximize what you’re doing on video to get the biggest bang for your buck so-to-speak.

The 3 biggest obstacles or excuses that I hear entrepreneurs make about recording or promoting videos:

  1. Mindset – you don’t think you look or sound good on video (article 1 of 3)
  2. Strategy – you aren’t sure what to say, share or promote on video (article 2 of 3)
  3. Systems – you aren’t that tech savvy or aren’t sure what software or technology to use to record your video and get it out there

In this article, the two preceding it, I share a bunch of tips for combating each one of these so hopefully this helps you get started using video now!

Tips for getting comfortable using the technology is always a big deterrent to getting started doing videos in business. If you want to learn how to get the right stuff without spending a mint and what else to do with your videos once they are created and uploaded, try these suggestions:

  • Look on your computer or chosen electronic device first for:
    1. Quicktime Player, iMovie or some other recording software – I love and use Quicktime Player on my Mac desktop all the time, it’s very easy to use. Download it for free for Mac or PC.
    2. YouTube easy upload buttons, apps or plug-ins – I actually just upload my videos directly from my desktop to YouTube first, then I can easily grab the embed code from there to add it to my website or some other webpage if necessary. You can also record directly on YouTube, no download required.
    3. iMovie also allows you to edit your videos – but frankly it’s a bit techy even for me so I just don’t edit my videos, I do them until they’re “good enough”.
    4. Photoshop will allow you to add graphics or words and links to the top of your video or create an image to go with your video with clickable links but this software is a bit expensive and more designer friendly.
  • Don’t buy anything too expensive right out of the gate for device, camera, webcam, software, program or microphone. Learn what you’re doing, saying and sending first; get comfortable doing videos, come up with a regular strategy and schedule and THEN if you want, invest more in your technology in my opinion. You may just need a nice, reasonably priced microphone, that’s it other than the program to record it, which should be free or included on your computer.
  • Practice with what you have on hand first – your webcam, your smartphone, tablet or laptop, just get comfortable doing video. No one even has to see the first few if you don’t want to but don’t wait for perfect, just get info, tips and yourself out there!
  • Good lighting and sound quality are the most important things say most video viewers. They typically don’t stick around to watch if they can’t hear you, your sound is too low or too garbled. Then a secret to lighting is to bring in a little end table light, take off the lampshade and stick in front of you but behind the camera, or have a window in front of you or some other light source but not behind you. And tilting the camera a bit so it’s looking down at you is better than looking up at you.
  • Try recording with the speaker on your phone or computer first to see if it’s good enough and clear. If not, you can pick up inexpensive microphones that plug into your desktop or laptop for better sound quality, I like the Logitech brand myself.
  • Save all your videos to your computer as well as putting them on YouTube if appropriate.
  • YouTube is for sharing with the world obviously but even sharing tips and content from your articles, ezines, products, events, books and more is good because it will just be snippets of that content that then you can share how to buy or invest in from there.
  • Write a good video title and description on your YouTube page and include a URL at the top of the description so it’s the first thing people see when viewing your videos.
  • Add as many tags as YouTube will let you upon uploading, include your main keywords, your name, business name and topic. Use close to the same tags on each video you upload so more of your videos pull up on the sidebar of each page.
  • Share your videos on social sites too, put it everywhere, no one watches everywhere.
  • Repurpose your video in your email newsletter, post on your blog or video page of your website then write an article about it or transcribe your video and use the written version of it as content too for emails, tweets, posts and more!
  •

I RECORDED A VIDEO SHARING MORE ABOUT THIS STEP – TECHNOLOGY & SYSTEMS – CLICK THE VIDEO BELOW TO WATCH !!

Remember, your promotional videos only have to be 2-3 minutes unless they are training videos or videos for regular clients. Longer videos are ok for some people who really are interested in the content but not typically for new people just being introduced to you.

The key is to just get started. Record one and send it out to a few clients or friends that you trust to review it and give you feedback.Perfection is NOT the best strategy here or you may never get anything done and out.

If you missed the first two articles in this series on Getting Started Using Videos in Business, go check them out. In the first two, I shared:

    • Tips to Make Yourself Look and Feel Better When Recording Video
    • Tips to figure out the Strategy for why and what you’re going to do with your videos or say on your videos

The top questions from entrepreneurs are “How do I find clients” and “How can I make more money?”

So how do you do it?  How do you continuously attract and find new clients, build the business that excites you and make more money … all at the same time?

Entrepreneurs get distracted with so many ideas and options that you either do nothing or you do too many things at once but none of them very well.

Don’t be fooled by all the tricks in the internet marketing world out there….if you’re in business and NOT seeing the kind of income you want to make then this is the perfect strategy for you to hone your skills in. I KNOW you’re not doing enough networking, relationship marketing or maximizing it when you do network. No one does….

Networking is STILL THE FASTEST PATH TO CASH for myself and any of my clients who need to generate business quickly.

So what is the fastest way to cash, and what about building relationships?

You need to meet as many people as you can and then keep in touch with them consistently and persistently in order to stay on top of their minds at all times. So, networking is the fastest way to build your list of customers and prospects and even referral sources. There are online networking strategies these days as well as offline, on this webinar we will touch on both.

    Where can you start?

1:  Find More Places to Network:  More local events, luncheons, meetings, conferences plus national or regional ones too. I recommend making a habit of attending one larger conference or 2-4 day event every quarter at least. Then monthly locally you can attend anywhere from 1-4 per week in most areas if you look hard enough. All the people you meet may not be exact prospects but you could find a lot of prospects, referral sources, opportunities to be a speaker and many other opportunities you wouldn’t have with less networking. One tip on where to find more networking groups or meetings is to search beyond your local chambers, go to meetup.com and do a search for the keywords that would be of interest to your target market, do a search on Google for groups with your specific focus or even search on Facebook or LInkedin.

2:  Have a Clear Strategy For Working the Room:  To just attend is not good enough, you want to go with a goal of how many people you want to meet, what other goals you can achieve, like how many potential referral sources you want to meet too. Sometimes you also want to become an exhibitor or sponsor of an event, not just an attendee for added exposure and added opportunity to showcase yourself and what you do. One tip for working the room is to ask lots of questions of everyone else and talk more about them than yourself. Asking for everyone’s cards so you can follow up later but even suggesting to them then that you’d love to set up a follow up, get-to-know-ya type of a call.

3:  Make Sure You Always Follow Up Like Crazy: This is where most business owners fall down and don’t actually maximize their time networking in the first place. Most sales will be made on the follow up. Most opportunities for speaking gigs or joint ventures will be made on the follow up. Calling to follow up is the best strategy but you also want to follow up via email and direct mail too. If you really want to make a big impression or get to someone quickly and they’re not responding then go search them out on Facebook or your favorite social media site and send them a message there too. One tip about follow up is to NOT add everyone you meet to your email newsletters or a subscription via email however, that is spamming and not good etiquette. If someone asks for you to send them your info or be added to your list then of course you can oblige. Finally, you want to follow up more than one time in each way, minimum of 2 direct mail attempts, emails and phone calls for best response.

Hopefully that helps you figure out how to fit more networking into your schedule and how to maximize your time too.  Remember, if you’re not that busy in your business and you need clients; your time spent networking could be the biggest bang for your buck and time to build your business quickly. This is why having a strategic business coach can really help you; we don’t let you go crazy implementing the wrong things first, we help you get focused.

One of the main things that stops a lot of entrepreneurs from moving forward in their business or holds them back from reaching the 6-figure mark is being in overwhelm.

Overwhelm can cripple a business owner. It sometimes gets so bad you may do nothing at all! And that’s not going to help you make more money or get more clients….you want to stay in constant action to see the best results. BUT those actions should be very strategic, planned and targeted to what you need to do to start, grow or market your business.

Many small business owners focus on the wrong things first in their business therefore sometimes filling their schedule with unnecessary tasks rather than revenue generating tasks.

So how can you overcome overwhelm?

Here are 3 ways that could help you get out of overwhelm faster or help you become more focused in the first place.

1:  Clear Space:  One of the first things I do sometimes with clients who are in overwhelm when they come to me is figure out where they’re spending time every week in their life and their business. This is one activity you can do to evaluate if you are spending your valuable time on unnecessary tasks or actual revenue generating actions. Keep track of ALL your activities for 7 full days, whether you’re working or not. Write them all down, everything you do plus how much time you’re spending on each task. Yes, down to doing the laundry and especially time on social media and email. Try to determine if you are doing things that will lead to a sale or talking with a prospect one way or another. If not, take note. After that week, review what you’ve been spending time doing and think of how you can shift time spent.

2:  Hire Team:  For many small business owners who are in the first 3-5 years of first starting your business you typically don’t believe you can afford to hire anyone just yet; usually because you’re still not making the amount of money that YOU want to make. But if you think differently about this; that by hiring one or two people to help you get more revenue generating activities done every month you could actually be in a place to talk with and sell more prospects into your programs, products and services. If you already have the beginning of a team, then evaluate your team. Are they doing the right things? Are you delegating the right tasks? What else is missing? More Marketing, more follow up, more connecting online, more touches with your database, more phone calls? These are the main revenue generating tasks that a team could be doing for you so you can reach more people every month.

3:  Evaluate Options: This is the most important of all. As entrepreneurs we typically have no shortage of ideas. Ideas though, sometimes are what overwhelms us. We want to develop this new product, that new program, send this email, hold a special sale, plan a big event or write that book. I could go on and on of course as these are all ideas I’ve had as well. Then there’s the outside influencers who give us more ideas and share things we “should be” doing in our business or our marketing. Just be careful who you listen to and how you prioritize what you do and keep a list or journal of ALL your ideas for the future. You don’t want to implement them all at once and there are certain things you want to do depending on how long you’ve been in business so also be careful about doing which things too early on in your business or you may not see the results from them that you want.

Hopefully that helps you with a few ways to get out of the overwhelm you could be in. Take it slow and get help if you need it. This is why having a strategic business coach can really help you; we don’t let you go crazy implementing the wrong things first, we help you get focused.
