This is a public Meetup group you’ll find at https://www.meetup.com/sacramentospeakersnetwork  You’ll find it to be a great place for collaboration, to share resources and exchange ideas.

Our focus is on the business of speaking and how to monetize what you’re doing in your business or your speaking. The majority of our members are business professionals or owners plus speakers or budding speakers. We all benefit by discussing strategies for generating more business and speaking engagements and networking to build relationships within the group.

Members also learn advanced business skills at each meeting.

The meetings are held in two formats…for those who are in Sacramento area, we have a live meeting each month that’s held locally. We gather for lunch, networking, training and we have two speakers present topics that are their areas of expertise. It’s a great opportunity to practice your speaking skills and for those in the audience, you’ll get a wealth of knowledge and information on a wide variety of topics. These meetings are currently scheduled from 11:30am – 1:30pm PST.

We also hold a Virtual Meeting each month on Zoom – it’s a webinar format and it’s FREE!! Anyone can join us from anywhere on the planet that has internet access. You don’t have to be a member to join us on these meetings. The meetings consist of networking, speaker business training, and we have one speaker at each meeting who presents on their topic of expertise. It’s fast paced and packed full of knowledge from 5:00pm-6pm PST.

If you are ready to step out to be a speaker, you’ll want to learn my 6 Steps to Jumpstarting Yourself as a Speaker to Grow and Monetize Your Business FASTER!

Are you wondering how becoming a speaker will generate more business for you or why it’s such an important marketing strategy?

Are you hesitant to really put yourself out there because you think you’re “too new” or maybe speaking on stages and even online scares you a bit?

Have you been trying to get yourself some speaking opportunities (I call them gigs) but you’re not having the best of luck getting booked?

Well, I’ll tell you; I get most of my coaching clients and even most of my paying customers for other products and programs from speaking gigs.

Here are Ways Speaking can be Helpful for You in your Business:

  • You can speak in person at a conference, workshop or business event.
  • You can speak over the phone or Skype on a teleclass, radio show, or podcast.
  • You can speak on a webinar or video conference (like Zoom) these days.
  • You can speak on video, either on YouTube or Facebook Live and more.
  • You can even host your own event – in person or online, that’s speaking too.

Any way you slice it, being a speaker allows YOU to be THE EXPERT in your industry or on your topic. It brings credibility to what you do, who you are and it allows people to experience you quicker than if they were to just read a page or two on your website.

Yes, I realize that there are others who speak on the topic you do. And they may have been in business for longer than you. But that doesn’t mean that they are the expert and you are not or that you shouldn’t also share what YOU know. It’s the opposite. Give your varying opinion I say.  Share what you know and how you do it different.

Too many people get caught up and don’t take action because they think that their thing is already being done in the marketplace. But the marketplace is a HUGE SPACE these days with the Internet and social media sites. You have the potential to reach millions and billions of people around the planet if you know what you’re doing and you take enough action.

When people get to hear you, or watch you for a longer period of time than just a quick hello or introduction, it gives them more of a sense of what you do, how you can help them, and they can make a more informed decision on if or how they want to work with you or at the very least, find out more. I highly recommend adding speaking to your overall marketing strategies if you’re a small business owner or sales professional of any kind.

I want to share the 6-step system that I teach in my Jumpstart Yourself as a Dynamic Speaker Training Course.  Some of this may be a refresher for you, but for some, it may not.

Step 1: Determine WHO you’ll talk to and what do they want to hear. Ask yourself “What are you an expert in? or Who is your target market and where will we find groups of them? What do they care about exactly that relates somewhat to what you do?“

Step 2: Develop your speaking topics and speaker sheet. It’s important to BE PREPARED for speaking opportunities at all times if you expect to get any. You want to have a professional speaker sheet ready to email someone who wants to book you that includes your topics, descriptions, bullets of what they’ll learn, your bio, picture and contact information at the very least.

Step 3: Strategize on where to get gigs. You’ll need to build a list of potential events, organizations or meetings that you can speak for locally, nationally and virtually. There are easy ways to find places but you need to do your due diligence if you want to get booked.

Step 4: Craft your presentations. It’s important to create your speaking presentations so that they are educational, informative, memorable and they make the audience take the action you want them to take at the end. Whether you’re making a sales pitch at the end or not, how you design your talk is crucial to your success.

Step 5: Design your accompanying marketing materials. Often times you’ll want handouts, flyers, order forms or table display materials for when you attend a live speaking event (as well as virtual – what to do online). Again, if you’re not prepared with these things then you’ll most likely waste your time doing the speaking in the first place.

Step 6: Following up after a speaking gig. Most speakers don’t do this well at all and it could be more important than what you do AT the event itself. Developing a kick-butt follow up plan for after an event will provide ongoing lead generation and sales.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas on what you need to work on to get started speaking more or getting booked more.

Remember though, speaking is just ONE type of marketing strategy that you may want to do in your small business. Generally, you need to do 5-15 marketing strategies every month in order to maximize your potential.

Many of you know about the Sacramento Speaker and Entrepreneur Network Meetup that I hold monthly here in the Sacramento area. This group is open to those who are new or experienced speakers who meet to network with each other, collaborate, share resources and who want to learn more about speaking in their business.

Attendees receive training each month on topics that relate to the business of speaking and we work on ways to find more speaking opportunities and to build our businesses. There’s a lot of energy generated at these meetings as well as sharing ideas! It’s a great group to network with.

The following is that 6 Step Process.

Then you could delegate the contacting of those people and places but it’s not always that easy to find someone who really understands what to ask or say to do this, trust me, I’ve tried; I find that I’m always the best person to look for and contact people to get myself booked.

It’s important to create your speaking presentations so that they are educational, informative, memorable and they make the audience take the action you want them to take at the end. Whether you’re making a sales pitch at the end or not, how you design your talk is crucial to your success, please don’t wing this.

One thing I like to suggest when speaking to a group of people who aren’t that familiar with you is to have and make an “Easy YES Offer”. This is something low priced and easy for someone to buy that gives them a ‘taste’ of what you offer to ‘try you out’.
  • Step 6: Following up after a speaking gig. Most speakers don’t do this well at all and it could be more important than what you do AT the event itself. Developing a kick-butt follow up plan for after an event will provide ongoing lead generation and sales. Most of my sales come in the follow up process but don’t rely only on email marketing these days, you have to do phone calling, direct mail and even connect with prospects on social media sites too as they may only see one of these four attempts!

Hopefully this gives you some idea on what to get started doing to jumpstart yourself as a speaker.

Are you ready to make money from speaking? I’m sharing information about what you need to have ready to go for any opportunity.

Speaking is one of the least expensive, most effective marketing strategies you can do in your business. If you’re already speaking then great, what I’m sharing in this article could be a good reminder for you.

speakingIf you are not speaking yet, then why not? Are you afraid of speaking or getting in front of an audience? Are you unsure of what to speak about or to whom or saying to yourself “who would care about what I have to say?”

Regardless of what you do in business you may want to consider speaking. Speaking allows you to be the expert in front of your prospects and peers. It gives you instant credibility and trust with the audience. And it speeds up the buying process when someone likes, trusts and is able to connect with you personally.

One of the biggest mistakes I see many speakers making however, is that they are rarely ever prepared for opportunities that may arise at any time.

Being prepared as a speaker will get you into more doors, position yourself as a professional to the people booking you to speak and it will allow you less stress and freedom to take advantage of all kinds of opportunities whenever they come up.

Here are a few things you want to make sure you have prepared:

  1. Professional speaker sheet – with your bio and/or introduction and your talk title and description at the very least. You can add references, additional talk descriptions, testimonials and places you’ve spoken too if you like and you have.
  2. Professional head shot – easily downloadable from your website or emailable
  3. One to five (max) talk topics and descriptions – you can have more than one if it makes sense for your business and what you speak on are all complimentary to some extent. If you’re just starting out, start with one signature talk however to make your life easier.
  4. Cover letter or email prewritten and ready to go – include all attachments and information someone would need to decide whether they want to book you as a speaker or guest
  5. Page on your website talking about you as a speaker – include your talk titles, places you’ve spoken, videos of you speaking and more information someone looking for a speaker could download easily on their own.
  6. Speaker videos – make sure you have at least one video of you speaking on stage or in front of a group; many events and bookers won’t even consider you without this these days.

Choosing the right signature talk you’d think is the easy part, however it can be the most crucial part of this whole equation, especially if you want to monetize your talk and your time.

You need to prepare what you’ll talk on based on what action you ultimately want the audience to take with you. Do you want them to sign up for your free gift or newsletter? Buy your book or product? Register for your event?

It’s important that you reverse engineer your talk based on what you want the audience to buy or sign up for. This is crucial and another big mistake I see many speakers making. They give a great talk then tag on a pitch to sell something totally different to the end and it feels like a sales pitch. Not good.

I’m in Washington state where my in-laws live to visit for an extended Easter Weekend. I hope you’re doing something fun too? And after a week with my 7 year old step-daughter Riley home too – what a joy as a home-based entrepreneur right? Having to entertain a young kid 24/7 when they’re home from school. I was pretty smart though, I scheduled myself pretty light this week, or when we had her, thankfully….so I could enjoy too right?

Today’s tip is this…Network in Person!

If you are not making enough money and don’t have enough clients, you’ve got to do something quick! The #1 most effective strategy when you need clients FAST is to go out and network with people, learn more about them and about their needs.

You may not be comfortable with networking initially but you’ll need to work on getting more comfortable so you can go out and network with others in person. If you want to build a business, you HAVE to be in a sales and marketing mode when you are talking to people. So do what you must to get over your being shy or uncomfortable when meeting or talking to new people. Networking is simply a skill that you can learn. Practice and you’ll get better at, without being salesy or pushy. You have to be able to work a room to pull out your leads and prospects, referral sources and yes, speaking opportunities!

My recommendations are:

  • Go to 3-5 networking events per week even if you have to travel to get there. You’ll find more people who are interested in you and what you have to offer if you meet them in person and talk to them.
  • Have an easy “yes” offer that is irresistible so people will purchase it on the spot to try you out.

I started my business initially by in person networking and following up and built it to
a high 5 figure business! I wasn’t doing online marketing at that time. But it’s still the most important thing you do today other than Speaking in front of an audience. If you are not networking, you are losing money!

  • have a brief statement ready if the other person asks what you do.
  • ask other people questions – dive deeper into what they do. Then ask what their biggest challenge is (in regard to what you do). This will give you an indication whether they might be a good prospect for you, maybe a good referral source or if they are in charge of a group, they might invite you to speak to their group.
