When is it time to raise your rates (OMG)?

Do you feel valued for what you get paid right now in your business?

I hope so!

Unfortunately, too often, I see entrepreneurs who don’t feel valued, or they feel a bit resentful even sometimes. OR I see entrepreneurs who don’t REALIZE what they’re worth – THAT happens most often actually. You just don’t know what people really will pay you for your time, expertise or a product or offering.

AND… if you leave it up to YOUR mindset about what to charge, sometimes we say things to ourselves like “Well, no one will pay THAT of course” or “people don’t have that kind of money” as you prejudge others as to what THEY will invest!! WTF? Seriously?

Stop it. Stop prejudging your potential customers and clients on what you “think” they can afford. Instead you need to STAND IN YOUR OWN TRUE VALUE & KNOW YOU DESERVE TO BE PAID THE AMOUNT YOU CHOOSE.

Many of us can charge whatever we want, that’s just how it goes with being an entrepreneur.

Others of you could have jobs or businesses that are regulated like Financial Planners or Insurance Agents perhaps or even Realtors (Don’t get me started on Realtors – they work WAY too hard before even getting paid a dime. I would never be a Realtor just because of that.)

So for those of you who CAN set your own rates, how do you know when it’s time to raise them or change up your business model perhaps and do something different?

I think, as soon as you even remotely start feeling undervalued or resentful for sure, but every year or couple years at least in most cases.

What about those of you who have the regulated type of business? Well, YOU can create other income streams perhaps. You can always write a book, or get paid to speak or do a training that can be outside your normal working services. You can host an event perhaps too or deep dive retreat if that’s more your thing. You just have to think “outside the box” and/or talk with someone like me who can help you strategize ideas and possibilities!

For those of you who maybe are unaware of what you could truly get paid for what you’re already doing, you need to start talking to people like me and others in other industries or in entrepreneur groups to get bigger ideas, see proof of others making more – they’re out there, you just may not come in contact with them!

For those of you who are NEWer in business, often times you think just because you’re new you have to start lower and that’s TOTALLY FALSE! You don’t. Many of the people I talk to who think this have so much darn expertise or experience in the area they’re now building a business around that they could charge 4 times as much as they’re initially thinking but they don’t see how that experience plays into their new business (yet). It does and you can come out of the gate at a much higher rate.

Either way you slice it, most of you who are reading this are probably NOT charging enough OR there are other ways you can easily sell your knowledge or experience but you just don’t know how to get that going.

It could be to launch a course or group program? A live event or start speaking. There are so many ways to make more money in your business but if you aren’t having conversations around this, then you’re not seeing those ways or seeing that it could be YOUR REALITY too.

I always say, “You’ve got to stay in the conversation” to continue learning, growing and expanding around your worth, your value, your skillset and more.

And another fun saying I say to people at my events and when I work with them is this: “You want to charge as much as you can possibly say without stuttering!” (Because when you stutter then you don’t look as confident of course.)

So… WHAT IS THE MOST YOU CAN SAY YOU’RE WORTH RIGHT NOW, TODAY, WITHOUT STUTTERING?

Do it, raise your rates! What have you got to lose? Besides, you can always negotiate when talking with a potential client if you want? “Start high and go low” is another thing I say. Don’t start with the one time call when you’re making an offer – start with the annual program and go down from there, then everything else seems like a much more doable option.

Getting really good at the “SALES CONVERSATION” is a critical skill that all entrepreneurs must learn, I don’t care what business or industry you are in. There is NO way around learning this and becoming better at sales. So no matter what you’re charging, you have to be able to show the value of what you offer in that conversation. The other person has to feel your worth and confidence, plain and simple.

Your Words Matter – How to Navigate the Sales Conversation

The other day I was on Zoom with a client and we were talking through the “sales conversation”. What wording she would use on calls with people who wanted to find out more about her services. What questions to ask them on the call and what she would want to gather ahead of time on an online sign up form that she would automate through her website…

Some of the things that we talked through and ideas generated would have NEVER occurred to her on her own. She left that call feeling more energized to go networking and talking with people about what she did because she knew what then to say with them when she got them to take the next step with her, something she wasn’t asking them to do until now because she didn’t know “what to say”.

IT’S THE WORDS that often stump us, squash our confidence and our motivation.

IT’S THE WORDS that allow perfect clients to walk away without being served by us.

IT’S THE WORDS that we have to learn so that we can be effective and successful in business.

If you don’t know them, they aren’t just going to come to you. You must learn them. You have to brainstorm them with people, many people sometimes to see what works and what doesn’t, then keep tweaking them until you see bigger positive results.

Honestly, this is probably the hugest topic that comes up on my coaching calls is how to navigate that sales conversation. I would say 95% of the Entrepreneurs I talk with have no clue how to take people through that type of call or conversation properly so it’s not salesy, so it also serves the other party AND it converts. By no fault of their own, they either came from a corporate environment or maybe were stay at home moms prior to starting their own business. Even some experienced sales people or marketing types who had jobs before and then now are starting their own business, have to learn to words to use. They have to learn new ways to hold sales conversations and new words to use because selling YOURSELF is a whole new ballgame!!

Fears crop up. Doubts surface. If you work from home it can even be worse because your only lifeline is your mind and sometimes that is very negative… I call it “headtrash”. Don’t listen to yourself if you are ever negative. You are worth way more than you think you are. Which is another thing that comes up too when we’re talking about sales conversations… and that’s WHAT TO SELL & FOR HOW MUCH!? Most Entrepreneurs, especially newer ones, under charge for their services; often times thinking “I’m new, I can’t charge more” when that’s just a big ol’ lie that your crappy mind tells you is all.

Don’t let the lack of sales experience, confidence around your worth and any crappy headtrash slow you down from making the bigger impact you’re meant to make on this world (and your family along with that). Get support.

Sneaky Email Subject Lines

What makes you open an email? Is it typically the subject line or are there emails you open just because of who sent it?

Some marketers pay a lot of money to copywriters to create amazing and engaging subject lines. Would you?

Imagine this:

You have an amazing message or story to share. You write it all out very thoughtfully in an email. You know your message or tips/advice, whatever it is that you’re sharing will change the lives of those who read it. You know it!

Yet, no one opens your emails… or like only 10% of the people you send it to open it, therefore only 10% of the people you intended to change their lives, weren’t impacted solely because they just weren’t excited enough or tempted enough to OPEN your email that day.

Instead, they just deleted it or moved it to trash.

Out of the 10% who did open it, 2% of those people replied back saying how moved they were, or that you helped them in some way.

Isn’t that what we want to have happen? Yet with 100% of the people we intend to see our message, right?

Well, you can have better results with your open rates in your email. You can get more engagement with your subscribers, clients and followers.

The key is getting a LOT more CREATIVE with your subject lines!

 

Now, I am no where near getting 100% open rate myself, nor do I even have 50% open rate and frankly that breaks my heart because I know that so much of the advice that I share can change the lives of those who read it too.

All I can do though is keep trying to “get your attention.” Sometimes that means I have to get a little sneaky or tricky with the subject lines!

Someone complained about my subject line recently “This made me think of you”. It was sort of sneaky I guess… but it was given to me by the interview series host that I am a part of and I know they probably paid a copyrighter to come up with this stuff so I used it. Plus, I added in text inside the email to really show how I thought it would apply to everyone who was on my list. I changed what they gave me a little bit to fit everyone here on my list, I thought.

When I thought about this though, I thought maybe I should share a little about “what makes up a good subject line” for your emails… I’ll bet everyone could use some good ideas for this!

I feel that there are 3 ways to write email subject lines, and mixing the first 2 of these styles up is good (from what I can tell).

  1. Plain and simple – Say what you mean and mean what you say. This is what I try to do more often than not. But please don’t put “Here’s my Newsletter”.
    1. Book launch is today
    2. Want to schedule a call?
    3. Event is open for registration now
    4. 5 tips for better client attraction
    5. 3 ways to build a website
    6. Please take my survey
    7. Webinar on Branding is tonight 5pm PST
  2. Sneaky – this is where people are more vague in their subject lines to get you to be curious and open to learn more or ‘find out’
    1. Have you tried this?
    2. Want to know my secret?
    3. This made me mad
    4. Time to CELEBRATE!
    5. Last call! Deadline today!
    6. Great news…
  3. Lie – this isn’t recommended actually but do you see people doing this? They ask you to open because of one reason then try to sell you in there for something else that has nothing to do with what the subject said. Nothing wrong with making offers in emails, just don’t bait and switch people I think.
  4. And what about all those emojis!?!?
    1. It’s fun to see emojis in email subject lines, my system won’t do it though so it’s annoying… some will, some won’t, but I would use them if you’re able!
    2. Or you can use brackets [ ] or *** in front of or around your subject line text too, anything you can do to make YOUR emails stand out in the bunch that come through people’s inboxes every day.

Speaking About Love…

The other day I sent an email out about the expert series I’m a part of all about creating extraordinary love in your life (if you missed that and want that, click here). Some of you have extraordinary love already which is amazing and I’m so happy for you. A lot of you however messaged me back saying how it really hit you just how unhappy you are being single. I hate to see anyone being unhappy in their love life. Frankly, having an amazing husband like I do, is probably one of the single best things that I have going for me. It allows me to be more confident in what I’m doing, who I am serving, it allows me to be proud and bold in my actions in my business and with the decisions that I make to grow my business every year.

I remember when I was single and dating, and I longed for a loving relationship like this so badly. It was on my lines pretty much every day which affected my ability to really work my business the way it needed to be worked. I wasn’t as motivated, I wasn’t as confident, and I wasn’t taking the action steps that I needed to take on a regular basis because of whatever reason. Sometimes I was in a funk, sometimes I was just plain depressed, and sometimes I just felt sorry for myself and didn’t want to talk to anybody copy.

Getting more love in your life as well as money in your business are the two single most important things that I see us entrepreneurs need to focus on, on a daily basis.

Did you know that focusing on Love or the lack of it can impact your ability to make money? Think about it.

As entrepreneurs or business owners, we have to wear a lot of hats. If you don’t have the love and support in your life, it’s nearly impossible to serve your clients effectively.

Let’s look a little closer at that statement. Here are some ways love or the lack of it can hold you back from being successful in your business and in your life.

Love For Yourself

Do you have self- worth issues?  Many of my clients do when they begin coaching with me.   I’ve found many of them do not know their value. They are practically giving away their expertise, services and products because they are not charging enough.

Mompreneurs get stuck because they put themselves last. They put everyone else’s need before their own. They usually burn out quickly.

And speaking of putting yourself last, many people who have self-worth issues resist investing in themselves. They are stuck in a hamster wheel but won’t invest in themselves or their business because they are afraid to spend the money; they think they don’t deserve it. They usually have a security mindset and the thought of risk, any risk, is something they can’t handle and won’t deal with.

Loving Environment

I know this one all too well…I lived it for years.

A good support system is vital to your success!  If your family, your spouse or your friends question why you want to be a business owner instead of having a J-O-B, you’ll find those questions will start invading your thoughts too.  And then your focus becomes second guessing yourself and your decisions, especially if you are struggling for clients and money.

If your spouse or significant other is not supportive of your efforts, your focus on your business will be replaced by focusing on your relationship.

Some examples include:

  • Letting your spouse tell you how to run your business even though you know better.
  • Letting the spouse make decisions on what your business needs are and how to invest in your business and its operations – i.e. – your spouse demanding to build your website to save money and it’s not their area of expertise.
  • Reporting your income and sales each month to your spouse as if they are your boss. Yes, I know people who’ve done that.

These are people who have a need for a consistent income even if it’s pays you peanuts or is something you hate doing!  Your relationship is crumbling and you’re headed for a break up or divorce because your partner just doesn’t understand that small business owners can be successful and make money.

When you are concentrating on any or all of these elements, it becomes difficult to stay motivated and your business will suffer.

If any of this sounds familiar, you’ve got to take action to save your sanity!

Consider some or all of these steps:

  1. Talk to your spouse or significant other about your BIG PICTURE vision for your business. If they understand your passion and how you can serve others AND make money doing that, they may become more supportive of your efforts.
  2. If your environment consists only of people who are employed in a J-O-B, look for other business owners in your area to talk to and brainstorm with. An entrepreneur will understand some of the challenges you are face and you will feel less isolated.
  3. Give yourself the luxury of a self-help or Appreciation Day. Give yourself a few minutes every morning to think about what you’ve accomplished the day, week or month before.
  4. And if necessary, re-evaluate any relationships that have become toxic to you.
  5. Get a mentor who has personally experienced much of these issues or has helped over people overcome similar challenges.

Without love for yourself and without being in a supportive, loving environment, it’s going to be really hard for you to focus on all of the activities to make enough money to support your business and yourself!

I talk to many entrepreneurs and when I ask them the question, “How much money do you need to make” some of them reply that they only need to make a couple of thousand dollars – every dollar amount given is in 4 figures.

4 FIGURES? Really?

Is that really all of the money you need in a year?

After taking a deeper dive with questions, I find the problem is they have a limiting belief that to make a 6 figure income or more requires a lot more time and a lot more work than they are already doing.

This is just not true – it’s a myth. And I get it – they are already working too hard! They are in OVERWHELM!

Working more hours is the last thing they are interested in because they are already working way too many hours!!

As you know, I travel a lot and I go to many events. I see so many ways successful business owners market and sell their expertise, products, and services. There are so many things you can do in your business to increase your income without adding more work to your overflowing schedule.

This is something I hear from entrepreneurs and business owners frequently. “I need to make more money in my business right now.”

Back in 2010, 5 years into my business, I had made a lot of high priced investments in my business by that point on coaching, coaches, business trips and workshops, etc. I found myself really “tapped out” to say the least.

I was super scared and not even sure of what but I knew that I couldn’t pay all my bills. It was the month before my 40th birthday and I’d never been in that position before of not being able to pay all my bills. It was scary.

I remember, as I sat cross legged on my carpeted office floor, with all my bills surrounding me on the floor, I cried, wondering which bills I shouldn’t pay this month and which I should. Which companies it would matter and which I could hold off.

My live-in boyfriend at the time was pretty scared too because he didn’t make enough to support my business and lifestyle too. In fact, I think this moment is what played a big part in him making the decision to break up with me the month following. He had an employee mindset and was used to regular paychecks coming in each month whereas I was used to the roller coaster cash flow of an entrepreneur lifestyle.

I still didn’t rationalize it well however as I normally do and how I do now so I’m sure if he saw me scared, it meant devastation for us in his eyes, whereas deep down, I do always know that “it will work out in the end”. But I’m sure I didn’t show it.

So, I had to make a few changes. I took a very close look at my monthly and annual expenses and saw that I could literally cut out $1000 per month of unnecessary expenses or expenses that I could temporarily cut out until I had more consistent revenue coming in; things that weren’t critical to the marketing and sales activities of my business (because I desperately needed those still – you don’t want to cut this!).

Luckily, I don’t have to worry so much about the monthly bills now as I’m making a very good, consistent income. It can always be better and I’m constantly marketing more to build on what I make now. But, because I’ve set my business up for ongoing revenue streams, the right business models and rates, a ton of marketing to reach an expansive amount of prospects each month and I’ve automated, systematized or delegated the majority of it… l can enjoy a less stressed life.

This is what I want for you too! I can show you how to make a LOT more money doing what you love in your business, that’s for sure.

There are two other ways more money can go into your pocketbook, or “stay” in your pocketbook each month if you take a few moments to see what you can do to maximize them.

1. Earn Cash Back Rewards when you buy things!

  • Do you have a credit card that gives you cash back or reward points you can use to buy things with or use for hotel stays, etc.? If not, get one!
  • Do you use Ebates when you shop online? If not, get it, it’s free! Then on most websites you shop on online, you engage the Ebates link when you’re there (it’s easy to do) and you can earn anywhere from 1-15% cash back on each purchase!
    • I’ve earned almost $200 this year by doing nothing special more than I would, just shop online like I would anyway.

  • Do you create profiles when you shop on sites like Southwest.com and Hotels.com? If not, make sure you do. Don’t just book your travel without using such tools because not only could you SAVE money on the reservations, but you can also earn free nights and free flights. I earn 2-4 free one way flights each year and earn 1-2 free hotel nights each year too!

2. Save money on things that you’re spending on – do an audit of your monthly expenses!

  • Are you still using those memberships that you have and are paying monthly on?
  • What about the software or online services you may be paying monthly on?
  • And check your personal household expenses too, chances are you could go without cable, DirectTV or Dish and just use Netflix, or the opposite might be true depending on your TV watching habits.
  • Evaluate coaching programs, groups, memberships that you signed up for, for professional development. Many of them may be totally worth the investment but don’t continue to pay for something you’re not using. Check the agreement and get out of it if you can and it’s not directly helping you.
