How to stay organized and productive during this time…

Are you finding that you’re not as ORGANIZED or PRODUCTIVE as you’d like to be right now?

If so, I racked my brain this morning to build a big list of things and tips to share with you that I do to get and stay organized and productive.

I’ve been doing all of this for years and since I already do a lot of my business virtually and online, there’s not a lot of “transition” or “learning curve” for me at this time…

But as I’m speaking with a lot of my clients and attending online networking events and calls on Zoom, I’m finding a LOT of professionals and entrepreneurs are NOT organized enough to be totally productive and profitable at this time.

Here’s a list of 20 things to consider paying more attention to or implementing in your life/daily business habits.

  1. Use your calendar! If you must use paper, ok, but otherwise I highly recommend a more universal online calendar like Google Calendar that you can literally check and update from any device, anywhere.
  2. Create folders on your desktop and in inbox to “sort” emails, documents, recordings by client, project, etc. so you can find things easily.
  3. Create Manila folders for physical notes and info and file near your desk.
  4. Date everything to keep good track – written notes and recordings or files put the date in the file name.
  5. Record calls and necessary information including content that you’re developing, sales conversations, client calls and more so you can keep information noted in case you forget stuff.
  6. Get on a computer for many things, not just phone to manage your social media marketing; often times doing things on the computer is much more efficient than “thumbing” your way through things in this digital time.
  7. Plan your day/week ahead of time and block out time too to work “ON” your business and do necessary marketing tasks.
  8. Review to dos nightly for the next day so you can hit the ground running every day.
  9. Take a shower and get presentable daily, early on, even if you don’t have to “go anywhere”, especially if you’ll be on video calls often or “should” be!!
  10. Eat a healthy breakfast that gives you energy, not one full of carbs or you’ll get too sleepy and lazy throughout the day.
  11. Workout if it also gives you energy.
  12. Schedule in and keep appointments for online networking calls, events and any one on one appointments, you gotta SHOW UP! Missing calls and appointments makes you look very unprofessional and unorganized.
  13. Set timers if you have to on your phone, Alexa, your computer, wherever… to keep you from forgetting things.
  14. Try to keep one place where you write down all your to dos, not a bunch of sticky notes or slips of paper, or random notes in your phone.
  15. Put all your creative ideas on that to do list under a section called ideas, knowing that you won’t implement them all at one time and can find them later.
  16. Have someone to share your fears and concerns with so you can get them out and not bottle them in to fester, someone like a spouse, friend or mentor.
  17. Recognize your most productive and creative hours of the day, and plan to create your marketing or implement ideas during that time, block off your calendar to do so regularly.
  18. If looking at your email or social media sucks you into a black hole of unproductiveness then plan times throughout the day where you are and do it on purpose and set a timer to get in and out quickly.
  19. Schedule specific times to do specific things to grow your business such as; social media marketing, writing, sending emails, checking emails, client calls, etc.
  20. Schedule in personal time too for self care such as; meditation, exercise, reading, journaling, prepping food, kids, family, etc.

Discover Something New to Sell

There are SO many ways to make money during this shutdown and isolation period. First of all, I can’t see it lasting much longer or the country will be in financial ruin…so stay in faith that this will all work itself out soon. However, if you can’t do “business as usual” or people aren’t buying the stuff you were selling the way you were selling it… it is time to tweak what you were doing or how you were doing it AND it could also be time to think up something else you can sell. (even if it has nothing to do with your core business)

I was on a call yesterday with a client who has an organizing company but she focuses on people when they move, so she’s a ‘move consultant’ in LA. She can’t do her business right now, working in people’s homes plus less people are “moving” during this pandemic. So one exercise that I did with her is something you can do also to help you “BRAINSTORM” new and different ideas on what you can sell perhaps now, as an additional income stream (could be temporary or long term, either way). I asked her (and this was a very hard question for her to answer frankly but I helped nudge the ideas out of her):

  • “What are you good at doing?”
  • “What questions do you get often that you like to answer and that help people?”
  • “What were you good at in the past, in past jobs or experiences (business or personal oriented)?”

I had to keep diving deep when she gave me “surface answers” to really get to the heart of what the true problem/issue was that she was so good at solving… you can do this with yourself too!

She answered things like: budgeting, managing people, getting kids to trust her and tell her anything, getting stuff done, helping people relieve stress, things not to do when dating, giving honest feedback, getting others to trust you and listen to you, positive reinforcement, setting deadlines, photography.

Do you see the possibilities with my client on what else she could potentially sell right now to pull her through?

I saw at least 3 and I shared them with her, what she could charge, etc. 

Do this if you need to figure something out quick to start generating some revenue. Then of course you have to market it and tell people about it. You have to go sell it.

It makes complete sense that someone would create a new business model in times like this so stop worrying what others will say about you “switching” your business, you’re not. You’re just getting creative, innovative and resourceful.

Zoom best practices, tips, etiquette & other meetings you can attend!

I’ve been madly creating resources and lists of other opportunities for you all to attend for virtual networking on Zoom and other ways… since that’s basically the only way to network these days.

When is it time to raise your rates (OMG)?

Do you feel valued for what you get paid right now in your business?

I hope so!

Unfortunately, too often, I see entrepreneurs who don’t feel valued, or they feel a bit resentful even sometimes. OR I see entrepreneurs who don’t REALIZE what they’re worth – THAT happens most often actually. You just don’t know what people really will pay you for your time, expertise or a product or offering.

AND… if you leave it up to YOUR mindset about what to charge, sometimes we say things to ourselves like “Well, no one will pay THAT of course” or “people don’t have that kind of money” as you prejudge others as to what THEY will invest!! WTF? Seriously?

Stop it. Stop prejudging your potential customers and clients on what you “think” they can afford. Instead you need to STAND IN YOUR OWN TRUE VALUE & KNOW YOU DESERVE TO BE PAID THE AMOUNT YOU CHOOSE.

Many of us can charge whatever we want, that’s just how it goes with being an entrepreneur.

Others of you could have jobs or businesses that are regulated like Financial Planners or Insurance Agents perhaps or even Realtors (Don’t get me started on Realtors – they work WAY too hard before even getting paid a dime. I would never be a Realtor just because of that.)

So for those of you who CAN set your own rates, how do you know when it’s time to raise them or change up your business model perhaps and do something different?

I think, as soon as you even remotely start feeling undervalued or resentful for sure, but every year or couple years at least in most cases.

What about those of you who have the regulated type of business? Well, YOU can create other income streams perhaps. You can always write a book, or get paid to speak or do a training that can be outside your normal working services. You can host an event perhaps too or deep dive retreat if that’s more your thing. You just have to think “outside the box” and/or talk with someone like me who can help you strategize ideas and possibilities!

For those of you who maybe are unaware of what you could truly get paid for what you’re already doing, you need to start talking to people like me and others in other industries or in entrepreneur groups to get bigger ideas, see proof of others making more – they’re out there, you just may not come in contact with them!

For those of you who are NEWer in business, often times you think just because you’re new you have to start lower and that’s TOTALLY FALSE! You don’t. Many of the people I talk to who think this have so much darn expertise or experience in the area they’re now building a business around that they could charge 4 times as much as they’re initially thinking but they don’t see how that experience plays into their new business (yet). It does and you can come out of the gate at a much higher rate.

Either way you slice it, most of you who are reading this are probably NOT charging enough OR there are other ways you can easily sell your knowledge or experience but you just don’t know how to get that going.

It could be to launch a course or group program? A live event or start speaking. There are so many ways to make more money in your business but if you aren’t having conversations around this, then you’re not seeing those ways or seeing that it could be YOUR REALITY too.

I always say, “You’ve got to stay in the conversation” to continue learning, growing and expanding around your worth, your value, your skillset and more.

And another fun saying I say to people at my events and when I work with them is this: “You want to charge as much as you can possibly say without stuttering!” (Because when you stutter then you don’t look as confident of course.)

So… WHAT IS THE MOST YOU CAN SAY YOU’RE WORTH RIGHT NOW, TODAY, WITHOUT STUTTERING?

Do it, raise your rates! What have you got to lose? Besides, you can always negotiate when talking with a potential client if you want? “Start high and go low” is another thing I say. Don’t start with the one time call when you’re making an offer – start with the annual program and go down from there, then everything else seems like a much more doable option.

Getting really good at the “SALES CONVERSATION” is a critical skill that all entrepreneurs must learn, I don’t care what business or industry you are in. There is NO way around learning this and becoming better at sales. So no matter what you’re charging, you have to be able to show the value of what you offer in that conversation. The other person has to feel your worth and confidence, plain and simple.

Your Words Matter – How to Navigate the Sales Conversation

The other day I was on Zoom with a client and we were talking through the “sales conversation”. What wording she would use on calls with people who wanted to find out more about her services. What questions to ask them on the call and what she would want to gather ahead of time on an online sign up form that she would automate through her website…

Some of the things that we talked through and ideas generated would have NEVER occurred to her on her own. She left that call feeling more energized to go networking and talking with people about what she did because she knew what then to say with them when she got them to take the next step with her, something she wasn’t asking them to do until now because she didn’t know “what to say”.

IT’S THE WORDS that often stump us, squash our confidence and our motivation.

IT’S THE WORDS that allow perfect clients to walk away without being served by us.

IT’S THE WORDS that we have to learn so that we can be effective and successful in business.

If you don’t know them, they aren’t just going to come to you. You must learn them. You have to brainstorm them with people, many people sometimes to see what works and what doesn’t, then keep tweaking them until you see bigger positive results.

Honestly, this is probably the hugest topic that comes up on my coaching calls is how to navigate that sales conversation. I would say 95% of the Entrepreneurs I talk with have no clue how to take people through that type of call or conversation properly so it’s not salesy, so it also serves the other party AND it converts. By no fault of their own, they either came from a corporate environment or maybe were stay at home moms prior to starting their own business. Even some experienced sales people or marketing types who had jobs before and then now are starting their own business, have to learn to words to use. They have to learn new ways to hold sales conversations and new words to use because selling YOURSELF is a whole new ballgame!!

Fears crop up. Doubts surface. If you work from home it can even be worse because your only lifeline is your mind and sometimes that is very negative… I call it “headtrash”. Don’t listen to yourself if you are ever negative. You are worth way more than you think you are. Which is another thing that comes up too when we’re talking about sales conversations… and that’s WHAT TO SELL & FOR HOW MUCH!? Most Entrepreneurs, especially newer ones, under charge for their services; often times thinking “I’m new, I can’t charge more” when that’s just a big ol’ lie that your crappy mind tells you is all.

Don’t let the lack of sales experience, confidence around your worth and any crappy headtrash slow you down from making the bigger impact you’re meant to make on this world (and your family along with that). Get support.

Sneaky Email Subject Lines

What makes you open an email? Is it typically the subject line or are there emails you open just because of who sent it?

Some marketers pay a lot of money to copywriters to create amazing and engaging subject lines. Would you?

Imagine this:

You have an amazing message or story to share. You write it all out very thoughtfully in an email. You know your message or tips/advice, whatever it is that you’re sharing will change the lives of those who read it. You know it!

Yet, no one opens your emails… or like only 10% of the people you send it to open it, therefore only 10% of the people you intended to change their lives, weren’t impacted solely because they just weren’t excited enough or tempted enough to OPEN your email that day.

Instead, they just deleted it or moved it to trash.

Out of the 10% who did open it, 2% of those people replied back saying how moved they were, or that you helped them in some way.

Isn’t that what we want to have happen? Yet with 100% of the people we intend to see our message, right?

Well, you can have better results with your open rates in your email. You can get more engagement with your subscribers, clients and followers.

The key is getting a LOT more CREATIVE with your subject lines!

 

Now, I am no where near getting 100% open rate myself, nor do I even have 50% open rate and frankly that breaks my heart because I know that so much of the advice that I share can change the lives of those who read it too.

All I can do though is keep trying to “get your attention.” Sometimes that means I have to get a little sneaky or tricky with the subject lines!

Someone complained about my subject line recently “This made me think of you”. It was sort of sneaky I guess… but it was given to me by the interview series host that I am a part of and I know they probably paid a copyrighter to come up with this stuff so I used it. Plus, I added in text inside the email to really show how I thought it would apply to everyone who was on my list. I changed what they gave me a little bit to fit everyone here on my list, I thought.

When I thought about this though, I thought maybe I should share a little about “what makes up a good subject line” for your emails… I’ll bet everyone could use some good ideas for this!

I feel that there are 3 ways to write email subject lines, and mixing the first 2 of these styles up is good (from what I can tell).

  1. Plain and simple – Say what you mean and mean what you say. This is what I try to do more often than not. But please don’t put “Here’s my Newsletter”.
    1. Book launch is today
    2. Want to schedule a call?
    3. Event is open for registration now
    4. 5 tips for better client attraction
    5. 3 ways to build a website
    6. Please take my survey
    7. Webinar on Branding is tonight 5pm PST
  2. Sneaky – this is where people are more vague in their subject lines to get you to be curious and open to learn more or ‘find out’
    1. Have you tried this?
    2. Want to know my secret?
    3. This made me mad
    4. Time to CELEBRATE!
    5. Last call! Deadline today!
    6. Great news…
  3. Lie – this isn’t recommended actually but do you see people doing this? They ask you to open because of one reason then try to sell you in there for something else that has nothing to do with what the subject said. Nothing wrong with making offers in emails, just don’t bait and switch people I think.
  4. And what about all those emojis!?!?
    1. It’s fun to see emojis in email subject lines, my system won’t do it though so it’s annoying… some will, some won’t, but I would use them if you’re able!
    2. Or you can use brackets [ ] or *** in front of or around your subject line text too, anything you can do to make YOUR emails stand out in the bunch that come through people’s inboxes every day.

Speaking About Love…

The other day I sent an email out about the expert series I’m a part of all about creating extraordinary love in your life (if you missed that and want that, click here). Some of you have extraordinary love already which is amazing and I’m so happy for you. A lot of you however messaged me back saying how it really hit you just how unhappy you are being single. I hate to see anyone being unhappy in their love life. Frankly, having an amazing husband like I do, is probably one of the single best things that I have going for me. It allows me to be more confident in what I’m doing, who I am serving, it allows me to be proud and bold in my actions in my business and with the decisions that I make to grow my business every year.

I remember when I was single and dating, and I longed for a loving relationship like this so badly. It was on my lines pretty much every day which affected my ability to really work my business the way it needed to be worked. I wasn’t as motivated, I wasn’t as confident, and I wasn’t taking the action steps that I needed to take on a regular basis because of whatever reason. Sometimes I was in a funk, sometimes I was just plain depressed, and sometimes I just felt sorry for myself and didn’t want to talk to anybody copy.

Getting more love in your life as well as money in your business are the two single most important things that I see us entrepreneurs need to focus on, on a daily basis.

Too many people I see however only focus on one or the other, usually it’s the business stuff because they’ve given up on finding love, or they’ve tried dating and “it doesn’t work “. What I like to do is help people focus on both. I have quite a few clients right now who are single and dating and it’s fun to give them advice on what to do and how to navigate the dating world, creating systems so they can meet more people and get to finding the right one faster. It’s also fun to see them seeing some success, and finding people that they have things in common with, have fun with etc.

Lessons Learned and Wins for 2019!

Hello and happy holidays!

For those of you who have seen my Facebook this week you know it’s been a very traumatizing week for my family and I won’t lie it’s been a hard five days. If you’d like to read more about what happened, here’s the post I made. There’s an update if you scroll down in the comments as well. It’s a little too hard to continue talking about however. Thank you though for everybody who shared your thoughts, your love, and your prayers, we really appreciate it.

In the midst of all that chaos and sadness, I somehow managed to pull the energy out and launch another International best-selling book! I’m excited for the 11 other authors in the book, many of whom this was their very first book, so to come out of the gate with an international best-seller was really cool for them. And thank you all so much who bought the book and shared it out for us, we really appreciate all that you did.

Then this morning, I was invited to be on a Facebook live with the Women Speakers Association Premier Members of which I’ve been a member of for four years or more (I can’t remember now).

We were asked to share our “wins” for the year things that we wanted to celebrate and even our “lessons learned.”

What I shared wasn’t what I had planned to share, it just came out. It was all about surrounding myself with communities of people who are full of love, friendship, generosity, and integrity. After all, that’s what really drives me these days.

I thought I would share in this email today a few of those wins, celebrations, and even Lessons Learned in hopes that they can help you in some small way.

And I would encourage you to look at your own “year-at-a-glance,” and see where you thrived, excelled, exceeded your expectations, and even stretched outside your own comfort zone. Celebrate yourself, you deserve it!

So, my big wins as I see them:

  1. Launching a brand-new organization called the International Entrepreneur Network and seeing over 140 people join within the year. I wanted to start this because I feel like I’m just not helping enough entrepreneurs. I meet dozens of entrepreneurs every month from all over the world who still have no idea what they are doing when starting up or growing their business. And they are so passionate but aren’t making the money, it breaks my heart and I want to help them. I want to help everyone.   2. I’ve helped 36 entrepreneurs become authors so far too, that’s super cool I think. I LOVE being an author and now I have 10 books – whoo hoo! It gets easier and easier to write or be a part of compilations the more that I do. It’s impressive too when you have one, but more than one is even that much more impressive. I love watching their faces when they light up sharing that they are now authors… and even Int’l Best-Selling authors!!   3. Consistency continues to be a BIG thing for me, it works. Being consistent with my marketing, lead generation, follow up and sales. Being consistent with my message, my actions, my investments, my networking, my boundaries. Being consistent with my beliefs, thoughts, and ability to make decisions quickly and without conviction.
  4. I really immersed myself in a new organization that I joined late last year called Polka Dot Powerhouse. I really love these ladies, they are so supportive, smart and connected. I was so active, I probably met and/or spoke at chapters with over 300-400 members total all year around the US including being an exhibitor at their Celebration conference in Boston. I’ll be back this coming year too PLUS I was chosen as one of the only 6 Diamond Trainers for 2020!! Showing up BIG (and being consistent) really does pay off.   5. I got SUPER OUTSIDE my COMFORT ZONE this year and after 11 years moved my 3-day entrepreneur training event to Los Angeles in November. Now, I probably won’t do that again, not because it wasn’t successful, it was. But because my main goal is to “simplify” in my business and life and having a big event like that with lots of moving parts and “stuff” does not simplify anything, it complicates it. So, for that ONE reason, it’s easier for me and Jason (my husband and now AV guy LOL), we will continue holding the events in the greater Sacramento area moving forward. BUT LA was a good test in “trusting that it will all work out in the end” which is one of my mantras. It did. My 2020 event schedule is up now, registration for the Love & Money Live event will be open soon!

 

Now, for a couple lessons learned in 2019, beyond what I already shared in the wins…

  1. Put myself first. I just told this to a client today too, in fact, we created her a mantra for her 2020 theme for the year “It’s All About Me”. She’s the opposite of selfish, in fact, she’s negative selfish so she really needs this. I told her to set a timer on her phone for every four hours for the whole year. (hee hee) Hopefully she’ll do this. Then when it goes off, have her stop and ask herself: “If it’s all about me, what do I need right now?” That seems like a weird thing to do I know and that often? But for some people, they need that many reminders, they get off track with putting themselves first in so many scenarios and situations every single day – from business and clients, to loved ones to even holding themselves accountable. I’ve been focused on eating right this past year and taking out of my diet the foods that don’t make me feel good – duh, what a concept right? Sticking with good for me, yummy foods. That’s one way that I put myself first. Another is that I sleep when I need to sleep and I make it a top priority to get enough sleep. I haven’t been sick a day all year!
  2. It takes risk. This year I retired my husband from his full-time job so he could start up his own business. (I guess this is one of my WINS too!) It felt really, really good to be able to do that because he was SO unhappy. We took the risk to reduce our income to one in the household so that he could pursue his dream. Not only that but he invested big in HIS business too, entering into a mentoring program for his particular industry of voice overs. Is it harder month by month? Yes but it will only be short term. Is it scary to let something go like that for him? You bet! But he’s lived through cancer, a bad marriage, divorce and a whole host of other things just like all of us and he now knows he can refuse to settle, whether it’s in a job he dislikes or with people that aren’t supportive. It takes trust, faith, determination and a lot of belief that anything is possible. With the right supportive and encouraging people around you, you can do this too.
  3. Keep my distance from yucky people. What do I mean by yucky? The ones who when you see them or hear them, give you that sick-to-your-stomach feeling in your gut, that’s who. If that means I don’t attend some of the biggest conferences in the industry because of it then so be it. I can no longer be around fake or inauthentic people, period. It hurts my energy and it pisses me off to see them lying to unsuspecting people, and more. I can’t be around selfish people who care only about themselves or them making money off of someone without giving a crap if it’s the person’s next best step or not. I can’t be around people who ASSOCIATE with those people, period. This is part of the boundaries I’ve set for myself. And frankly if that means I make less money by not collaborating with some people then who cares. I’m here to help more people create happier lives for themselves which includes more love in their life and money in their business.
