We’re almost to the half way mark for the year and boy is it flying by!

I wanted to let you in on a little secret that I’m doing right now in my business and it’s about getting back to the basics.

Yes, you heard it here first….the queen of doing all kinds of stuff in her biz is still doing the basics!

Why? Because that what works! (in any economy)

You see, while the leveraged business models are still working, there are some business models that you want to spend your time on and some you ABSOLUTELY DON’T right now….

It’s time to ‘Get Back to the Basics’ of what works in your business, the types of things you’re selling, your marketing, your follow up and your overall effective work habits.

In the last few months every business owner I’ve spoken to has all had the same questions:

“What can I do that will bring me more business, nothing is working?”

“Where should I be focusing in my business, I feel like I’m spinning my wheels?”

“How do I get out of overwhelm? There’s so much to do!”

Well, you’re not alone. However there’s a lot of hypy sales stuff out there that sounds great and sounds like it could help you make millions of dollars but will it really work for YOUR type of business and YOU?

Every once in a while something occurs pretty often that really bugs me and of course I’m inclined to speak my mind.

You see I’ve been doing some very ‘Interactive Follow Up’ lately which is one very important key aspect of your marketing (or it should be). I’ve been making phone calls. My team and I actually have been calling many people I’ve met in the last few months or more, reconnecting with them (even some of you reading this now); something I don’t see small business owners taking the time to do at all – follow up calls.

I can tell you that ‘Interactive Follow Up’ is so important for you to make time to do in this busy, fast-paced world in order to stand out among your competitors. Most of your competitors are just sending emails or mail or facebooking but hardly anyone takes the time to reach out and make a phone connection – that’s when you become more memorable!

The issue is that when you do try to reach out like we have been doing…..no one hardly returns your phone calls or messages. Does that happen to you too?

Well as the caller, its disappointing right? One thing you can do is make sure you don’t talk about your products or services on that follow up call. Your goal should be to connect on a more personal basis to find out if or how you can support each other. Most people I see that do their follow up calls make this mistake and try to sell, sell, sell or push stuff and that’s what turns us off.

As the person who gets called, I get that you’re busy but do you want more business or not? If you don’t return phone calls, not just from me but from a lot of other people who try to connect with you (even sales people) you are just leaving money on the table in my opinion.

Let me give you 4 simple yet powerful reasons why you DEFINITELY and ALWAYS want to return all business phone calls:

  • The person calling could be your very next customer!
  • The person calling could refer to you your very next customer if you take the time to engage with them on what your needs are too at some point in the relationship building process.
  • The person calling could have a big influence in the area, industry or in some other way that if you ignore them, it could prove not to be a good thing for your reputation
  • The person calling could know someone or something that you need to know to help you grow your business

Have you thought about that?

Yes even a sales person that calls….if you engage with them, how do you know if they might not be interested in what you’re doing enough to be able to refer someone to you or help you in one way or another. However unless you investigate and return that call and take time to build that relationship instead of burn a bridge possibly how will you know what was possible?

I say never be too busy or egotistical to return your calls. Someone may have worked up a lot of courage on their part to even call you in the first place, the least you can do is call them back and see if or how you can support each other.

–>> Without a clear focus on what you’re selling, how you’re marketing and to whom you’re marketing how do you expect to really become more successful?

This is one of the most difficult things for small business owners that I see which holds them back.

There is so much you need to do these days in your business just to even keep it afloat much less make a ton of money. Are you feeling a bit overwhelmed in this new year?

If your goal isn’t to make a ton of money that’s ok but either way, you need to market more and be very focused in what you’re offering online and in person or people will find it hard to understand why or how you can help them or why they should buy your stuff.

So where do you start to create YOUR Big Picture Plan?

Here are some key elements that your plan might consist of:

 

  • How much money you need to make this coming year?
  • – Break down your annual revenue goal into monthly increments so you can then determine how many clients/customers you need to get to reach that goal.
  • What new programs, products or services do you want to launch and when?
  • – What needs to be in place to make sure that happens efficiently
  • What personal goals do you have (vacations, time off with family each week, relationship focus, self care, etc)
  • What marketing will you tweak or add this year to reach more of your ideal target market
  • How many clients will you need in order to reach those money goals? Figure it out.

Now, what are the steps you need to take to reach those goals? Do you know?

Do you have those plotted out as well? This part is crucial. Some people just write down the goal but then stop there. You want to break each goal into bite size pieces or tasks that you can then do or accomplish every week, month or quarter to reach those goals and make them manageable. Hence, being focused.


Sometimes you will need to focus more on the inner workings of your business and the systems it takes to serve more customers or sell or follow up with more prospects to turn them into customers.


Other times its about focusing more on the marketing and lead generation (once you have those systems in place).

Here are my top 11 Marketing Strategies that you probably want to make sure you are focusing on this year.

  • Networking in person
  • Speaking in person or online/phone/radio
  • Social Media marketing and networking (using my messaging system is preferred in order for this to really work for you!)
  • Being a vendor/exhibitor/sponsor at live events (I teach this in my Tradeshow Networking Tool Kit)
  • Co-promoting with other complimentary business owners (there’s a whole bunch of things you can do for free with others to promote each other)
  • Phone calls (soooo important!)
  • Video marketing – create tips, a video channel and more
  • Blogging – good, consistent, keyword rich content drives traffic
  • Offer freebies/bonuses/gifts, etc. for promos for others, launches and more
  • Testimonial marketing
  • Publicity (missed opportunity for most small business owners)

This particular topic has arisen for me this week because so many women who’ve come to me for help with their businesses have been so extremely overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with all the things they think they need to do, the things they are already doing plus they’re usually not just running a business but they have a household kids and a husband usually to manage too. That’s a lot.

 

One of the things I love to do is coach women entrepreneurs how to manage being overwhelmed in their business, how to create better and more effective systems, processes, marketing and teams to take away much of their overwhelm so they can live a happier life.

 

We can be overwhelmed with our business, our to-do lists, our email, our prospecting and follow up – so much so that none of it gets done right? Ever been there? So stuck on what to do that you can’t do anything productive at all?

Well when (or if) that happens to you, I hope you stop to think first:

“What’s the big goal that I’m trying to achieve? What are the most productive things I can do to get me there?”

Then of course you want to prioritize those things and hold yourself accountable (or get someone else to) and get to work. Easier said than done huh?

Especially if life throws you a curveball with issues in your relationship, a death or sickness in the family, a child moving out to college or some other life-changing or tragic occurrence.

How are you supposed to focus then? How are you supposed to get things done then?

Well I may not be a psychotherapist or anything along those lines but what I do know is that it revolves around how you let yourself BE, feel and adapt to what’s going on that will make or break your results, your transformation or your lessons learned from that particular situation.

You can cuddle up on your sofa with a good chic flick and wallow in your sadness (ok maybe do that for a day), or you can stand strong and tall and get back up on that horse so to speak; surrounding yourself with those who care about you, those who will pull you up and inspire you to perform your greatness.

How this relates to your business as an entrepreneur is so obvious to me but might not be to you; let me explain…

In your business you will have ups and downs. You will have successes and failures. You will have big boosts of revenue and big valleys of nothing at some point.

It’s your big picture vision, your belief in yourself and what you’re meant to do here on our planet and your stick-to-it determination to keep going, stepping up and stepping out regardless of what’s going on in your life that will ensure your ultimate success and happiness.

So, I say, don’t let that go.

  • DON’T: Let others bring you down or discourage you.
  • DON’T: Settle for less than you deserve (with anything – in business, love or life).
  • DON’T: Doubt your abilities, experience or self-worth

Instead…

  • DO: Give and receive love
  • DO: Give and receive advice and knowledge freely
  • DO: Appreciate YOU and what you’re worth
  • DO: Hold out for what matters most to you (the right clients, relationship, home)
  • DO: Feel and be whatever it is that you need to feel or be to experience what you need to experience to be able to work through the situation and move on

How could this be you ask?

Business owners or wanna be business owners have so many options these days, it’s amazing.

With the Internet, you can reach millions of people to sell your products or services, you just may not know how to do that and need to learn.


In fact, it’s been tested by some of the big internet players out there that much of the marketing and advertising options that cost money don’t work as well as the free strategies that are available to anyone.

Therefore, it’s true, you can start a business with no money.

Now of course it’s important that you have a website and some business cards and those may cost some money. However, if you have the right, product, program or service that people want and you go out and talk to people about it, you can literally sell it if you provide the value and give a good offer.

Meaning you can take payment on the spot! I’ve done it, most of my clients have done it. We don’t just sit around waiting for the website to be done to start selling; you can sell immediately.

When people like, trust and connect with you, they don’t always need to see your site, references or any print marketing materials before they are willing to invest.

For those of you who aren’t as comfortable talking about yourself and what you offer then this can be a bit more challenging so you want to learn how to get over this. Makes sense right?

Now don’t get me wrong you do want all the basics building a business the right way from the start can give you but you can do that while or shortly after you start making money with ‘your thing’.

Now the challenge becomes either what is ‘your thing’ or how to offer/sell ‘your thing’ because what you may think is going to work may not.

That’s not your fault though, we aren’t born with the skills we need to be a successful entrepreneur. We aren’t really even taught those stills in college or masters programs in fact.

Entrepreneurial skills are more effective and up-to-date when learned by someone else doing what you want to do, someone who’s been where you are and can show you how to get where they are now, they could be teaching what you need to learn, making the kind of money you want to make or living the lifestyle you want to live.

That’s how I got to where I am in my business. I started with a shoestring budget which was basically a few thousands dollars I borrowed from my mom. I hired a coach who helped me FOCUS on WHAT to do and went out and networked every week and I followed up; and I got clients! As I grew the number of clients I had, I began investing in the other basic business necessities I needed like a website, marketing materials, an assistant, other technology and systems, etc.

That first coach helped steer me in the right direction but even then, they didn’t have the type of entrepreneurial training program or process that I really could have used, hardly anyone does even still to this day.

That’s what I saw a couple years ago that was missing…

No wonder some small business owners and entrepreneurs still don’t really know how to build a successful business or what it takes to start getting clients or what the basics of building a successful business really are!

That’s why I’ve been running my Jumpstart Your Business in 90 Days Virtual Bootcamp for almost 2 years now with such success for its participants – its exactly what most entrepreneurs need to fill in the gaps, lay out the entire plan, show you the how to do everything, set up the basic systems and marketing to build a successful business and more!

Have you ever designed a new program, product or service or had an idea for one that you had no idea how to price?  Oftentimes, do you wonder if your ideal prospects will pay you what you’re worth?

When you think about pricing your programs, products, and services in your business, it can be a tricky decision. However, no matter what you charge, if you don’t show to your prospects the value of what they’re going to receive, learn or walk away with after buying your program, product or service, then the price doesn’t matter.

If you can show enough value, you can charge really high prices. You would be surprised what some people would be willing to pay if they see that what you’re offering is the exact solution to the biggest problem they have.

 Don’t be scared to raise your rate. Don’t be scared to charge a premium for your services or for working with YOU rather than one of your PEOPLE.  It basically comes down to your own confidence and the wording you use to describe what you do and how it will help people.

What’s important is learning how to speak and write about the value you’re going to share or that your prospects are going to receive. That is the key to getting paid what you’re worth.  This is a learned skill however for most entrepreneurs, you usually aren’t born with the ability to talk or write in a sales and marketing way while still exuding the value of what you offer by talking about what matters most to THEM about what you do.
