Are you wondering how becoming a speaker will generate more business for you or why it’s such an important marketing strategy?

Are you hesitant to really put yourself out there because you think you’re “too new” or maybe speaking on stages and even online scares you a bit?

Have you been trying to get yourself some speaking opportunities (I call them gigs) but you’re not having the best of luck getting booked?

Well, I’ll tell you; I get most of my coaching clients and even most of my paying customers for other products and programs from speaking gigs.

Here are Ways Speaking can be Helpful for You in your Business:

  • You can speak in person at a conference, workshop or business event.
  • You can speak over the phone or Skype on a teleclass, radio show, or podcast.
  • You can speak on a webinar or video conference (like Zoom) these days.
  • You can speak on video, either on YouTube or Facebook Live and more.
  • You can even host your own event – in person or online, that’s speaking too.

Any way you slice it, being a speaker allows YOU to be THE EXPERT in your industry or on your topic. It brings credibility to what you do, who you are and it allows people to experience you quicker than if they were to just read a page or two on your website.

Yes, I realize that there are others who speak on the topic you do. And they may have been in business for longer than you. But that doesn’t mean that they are the expert and you are not or that you shouldn’t also share what YOU know. It’s the opposite. Give your varying opinion I say.  Share what you know and how you do it different.

Too many people get caught up and don’t take action because they think that their thing is already being done in the marketplace. But the marketplace is a HUGE SPACE these days with the Internet and social media sites. You have the potential to reach millions and billions of people around the planet if you know what you’re doing and you take enough action.

When people get to hear you, or watch you for a longer period of time than just a quick hello or introduction, it gives them more of a sense of what you do, how you can help them, and they can make a more informed decision on if or how they want to work with you or at the very least, find out more. I highly recommend adding speaking to your overall marketing strategies if you’re a small business owner or sales professional of any kind.

I want to share the 6-step system that I teach in my Jumpstart Yourself as a Dynamic Speaker Training Course.  Some of this may be a refresher for you, but for some, it may not.

Step 1: Determine WHO you’ll talk to and what do they want to hear. Ask yourself “What are you an expert in? or Who is your target market and where will we find groups of them? What do they care about exactly that relates somewhat to what you do?“

Step 2: Develop your speaking topics and speaker sheet. It’s important to BE PREPARED for speaking opportunities at all times if you expect to get any. You want to have a professional speaker sheet ready to email someone who wants to book you that includes your topics, descriptions, bullets of what they’ll learn, your bio, picture and contact information at the very least.

Step 3: Strategize on where to get gigs. You’ll need to build a list of potential events, organizations or meetings that you can speak for locally, nationally and virtually. There are easy ways to find places but you need to do your due diligence if you want to get booked.

Step 4: Craft your presentations. It’s important to create your speaking presentations so that they are educational, informative, memorable and they make the audience take the action you want them to take at the end. Whether you’re making a sales pitch at the end or not, how you design your talk is crucial to your success.

Step 5: Design your accompanying marketing materials. Often times you’ll want handouts, flyers, order forms or table display materials for when you attend a live speaking event (as well as virtual – what to do online). Again, if you’re not prepared with these things then you’ll most likely waste your time doing the speaking in the first place.

Step 6: Following up after a speaking gig. Most speakers don’t do this well at all and it could be more important than what you do AT the event itself. Developing a kick-butt follow up plan for after an event will provide ongoing lead generation and sales.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas on what you need to work on to get started speaking more or getting booked more.

Remember though, speaking is just ONE type of marketing strategy that you may want to do in your small business. Generally, you need to do 5-15 marketing strategies every month in order to maximize your potential.

There was a time when a public speaker would be hired to speak to an audience. Speakers like Anthony Robbins, Barbara Corcoran and Les Brown could make thousands off of a single appearance on stage. In recent years, this has changed. Trust me these speakers are still getting paid a handsome fee, but it’s the new generation of public speakers that aren’t seeing these grand offers.

There is a significant difference between the highly paid speakers and the new generation. The new generation of speakers is made up of people like you and me: business strategists, life coaches, insurance agents, health advisors, and social media experts.

Why? Because these speakers have fospeaker microphone and moneyund great benefit in public speaking – they can grow their business and share their message to more people at one time. Think about it: a 30-minute presentation to 20 people in one room beats cold calling 20 people in one day.

That’s why I say “YES” to “no fee” engagements. I’m a branding strategist and I have tailored my presentation to provide information and be a resource to the audience. I know that speaking will benefit my success in some way. To get the most out of my speaking I ask of the event host or meeting planner if they can fulfill these requests:

  • provide me with back of the room (BOR) presence to sell products and generate leads
  • purchase my products or books in advance and gift them to the audience
  • introduce me to other organizations that would have my as a speaker
  • introduce me to key people that could use my services
  • provide an attendee list with contact information for my use
  • hold a drawing to give away a product/service
  • get a copy of any video or photographs taken of me at the event for my use

Create your own list of requests to leverage your time at the event, not just on stage. There are other strategies to help you get compensated for your expertise and time.

I’ve been an entrepreneur since 2002. I’ve taken numerous courses and trainings, hired mentors, been in masterminds, etc. to upwards of $170,000 in investments in my business.

One of the many marketing and lead generation strategies I learned along the way that I still do today, 8 years later is to hold teleclasses & webinars live just about every single month.

I hope you realize how important speaking can be to YOUR business too. And speaking in this way can catapult your business tremendously in many ways. Let me share how… 

  • First of all, holding your own teleclasses & webinars gets you in front of dozens if not hundreds of potential prospects all at one time therefore extremely leveraging your time
  • It allows you the opportunity in many cases to make an offer from the platform you’re on due to the increased like-trust-connect factor of your participants
  • When you market these types of calls and presentations you have the opportunity to reach potential prospects around the world, not just in your local area
  • Teleclasses & webinars (if done well and include the right content) can increase your visibility and exposure on your online platforms and social media as well as position you more as an expert in your field

Why the majority of entrepreneurs DO NOT HOLD THEIR OWN Teleclasses & Webinars:

  • Fear of the unknown
  • Not sure what to say or how to present in that manner or any manner if they’re not speaking much already
  • Apprehensive of the technology needs required to hold such presentations
  • Not sure how to get people to attend (hence market the presentation)
  • Lack of confidence that anyone would want to listen to you anyway

How can you get over these issues and challenges if this is you?

  • You have to ask for support and guidance first of all, this type of marketing strategy is SIMPLE for those of us who do it and can show anyone HOW pretty quickly IF YOU ASK
  • You commit to doing it and just push through
  • You get some support around what to say during your presentation and how to present in a way that makes people want to stick around the listen in the whole time
  • You get some support and guidance around how to present an offer, even if it’s a free offer or call you want participants to take care of
  • You realize quickly how much this could grow your business if you just start doing it

Speaking in your business through these online portholes so to speak can work if you do a few things right:

  • First, plot out the topics you could cover in such a manner
  • Make sure those topics are what your target prospects want to hear more about by possibly surveying them or asking
  • Next, plot out the dates and times you will hold your events and choose which options are right for you – teleclasses, webinars, Google Hangouts, other?
  • Write out the topic description and come up with a hooky title (DO NOT DEVELOP THE ENTIRE PRESENTATION AT THIS TIME!)
  • Thirdly, learn a little about the technology and what you’ll need to effectively host your own teleclass or webinar and how you will present it online for prospects to enroll in your class and get on your email list in the process
  • Next, get up a registration page and process in place to take registrations, getting people on your list
  • Fourth, start marketing the event anywhere and everywhere you can think of – online and offline (see me for a full marketing plan if you aren’t sure!)
  • And finally, now you build out your content, once you know people are coming and you need to deliver – there is a specific way to lay out your content, putting certain things in the intro, the middle and the close or you may not see people stick around until the end or take the action you want them to take.
  • Oh and don’t forget to REMIND attendees to come to the call! People always forget that step!
