If you’ve ever entered an online contest, offered your email address to an online or local store, or given the okay for a sales consultant to send you information, you’ve joined an email list.

Email lists are simply the email addresses and names of people who signed up, by one of many different means, to receive emails such as electronic magazines (“e-zines”) or newsletters, electronic courses (e-courses), or product information in their inbox.

Collecting customer and prospect contact information and keeping in touch with them on a regular basis is the key to any online business’s success.

Here are some of the main reasons to start building your list:

Presence – An email list that you use regularly gives you an easy way to keep your name in front of your customers and prospects on a continual basis.

Connection – Your average customer may only purchase from you a few times a year. But you continue to stay in touch with her, providing her with quality information that relates to a topic she’s interested in. When she DOES need to purchase, you’ll be the one she buys it from.

Education – Some products and industries require more education before prospects are ready to purchase. Email lists offer an easy, inexpensive way to provide the information your prospects need, moving them through the learning curve, until they’re ready to buy.

Feedback – Do your customers want your next product to be bigger or smaller than what you have now? Do they hate the background music on your website? Do they wish your software was compatible with a platform you don’t currently offer? Don’t guess — just ask them!

Easy to Share – Word-of-mouth can be your best source of new business. By providing easy-to-share electronic newsletters or product information, you make it more likely that your current customers will pass the word to their friends, without incurring a minute of your time or a penny of your money.

Those are some great reasons for building a list but how do you know what to write and when?

There are 4 primary types of email sequences every business needs, they are:

1. Nurture Sequence for your freebie – Follow Up Sequence – behind an opt-in
2. Transactional Sequence – Follow Up Sequence – behind a purchase
3. General/Newsletter Sequence – an email you send out at regular intervals to your list
4. Launch Sequence for a Program – promotional emails

What is the goal of a nurture sequence?

  • Build new relationship
  • Lasts 15 to 21 days

What is the goal of a transactional sequence?

  • Eliminate buyer’s remorse
  • Remember results sell

What is the goal of a newsletter?

  • Educate & Build TOMA (Top of Mind Awareness)
  • Send a weekly newsletter
  • EXAMPLE: Tuesday Tips. Wednesday Wins

What is the goal of a launch sequence?

  • Sell something
  • Average 3 emails per week

Networking and speaking in my business are two of the most important and revenue producing activities that I do. BUT it’s because of my extensive follow up system and engagement before, during and after an event that makes it more profitable.

One thing I see with other speakers and entrepreneurs is they collect a TON of business cards at events or fill in forms, contact info, etc. however they RARELY do anything with them. (At least not enough with them.)

On this video I share a few tips on what YOU CAN DO with those new contacts and business cards that you collect so you know how to better maximize your time and investment in attending events.

Because there are some very important NO-NO’s that you want to be aware of and believe it or not, this doesn’t necessarily come natural to most people.

Now, one of the most important things to do with those cards is sort them.

  • By where you met them
  • Maybe by whether they are Hot, Warm or Cold leads OR if they’re JV (joint venture/referral) type sources
  • Whether they are Auto Adds or Not Auto Adds – meaning if you have their approval to add them to your database/email newsletter or not. Just because they actually give you their card does not mean they give you permission to email them, you must get a Verbal Opt In from them. (I explain all of this in depth in my Jumpstart Your Marketing® Follow Up System)

Then of course you have to do something with them – you want to follow up in 4 different ways with ALL contacts:

  • call,
  • email,
  • mail and
  • connect with them on social media too!

The other, second most important thing to do with those business cards, is to actually get them entered into your database (email marketing system or shopping cart) – DATA ENTRY is the top reason why most entrepreneurs do not do enough follow up because they don’t delegate this step. You think you’re going to get around to doing this yourself but let’s face it, most of you are not nor should you!

Do you have a strategy or do you just send emails out hap-hazardly?

Most entrepreneurs I see in my coaching business or who attend my live events are doing the latter. Of course what you want to do is have a big picture strategy first, then the actual getting it done becomes a lot easier.

Now, email marketing is just ONE piece of the overall pie that your business would want to be focusing on for marketing but you want to maximize your time with it so it doesn’t take up too much time either. There is more to do than just this one marketing and follow up strategy…

In order to have a good, efficient and results-oriented email marketing strategy you want to consider and/or implement the following things:

  1. Have an approved list – make sure the people you are sending emails to regularly via your email marketing system or service have agreed either in person, verbally or opted in on your website to receive your emails. Otherwise if they have not, you are spamming, plain and simple. (See my Ultimate Marketing Follow Up System though to know what to do with those non-opted-in people however because you can entice them to want to get your emails but it’s very strategic messaging you’ll want to use.)
  2. Plan out your content – using a Content Marketing Calendar is best when you’re not as accustomed to delivering regular emails to your list. This way you have special themes or promotions planned out and it’s easier to figure out what to write or talk about each month in your emails.
  3. Make sure you do use an actual email marketing program such as either a shopping cart such as Jumpstart Shopping Cart or a service that just sends approved emails for you such as Constant Contact, Aweber or MailChimp.
  4. Develop some templates for you to use for emailing. I always recommend having a newsletter looking template with sections and header and then also more of a casual template or announcement template with little branding and structure.
  5. Set a schedule for when you’ll send what and stick to it. You really need to touch your subscribers more than just once a month so a newsletter every other week is recommended to start. You can do weekly with less content if you’d like but it’s not necessary.
  6. Delegate whatever you don’t like to do or want to do regarding sending out your emails. I do recommend you try to develop the content as much as you can especially if your business features you. Dealing with the technology however or putting the components of your email together to send out could be something someone else does.
  7. Always pay attention to creating really attention getting subject lines so your emails are more likely to get opened.
  8. Finally, check your statistics often and revise your approach and strategy as needed. You’ll see which topics your subscribers gravitate towards more plus other stats to help you develop more content or even paid programs and products.
