I’m back from my five day speaking tour in Dallas, and today, I want to share some ideas with you about creating content.  Generating content is a topic that is many of my clients and a few in my Mastermind Group are currently struggling with.  I’ve gotten many questions about creating content in the past week.

First, you HAVE to do MORE content marketing.  Some common objections I hear about generating content are:

  • There is a lot of content in the world already.
  • Someone may have already written something on a topic that you want to write about.
  • You may have concerns that people may not care to hear what you have to say on the subject.
  • Someone else knows more about the topic than you do.

  • Overcome Your Objections: Don’t let fear that your content isn’t good enough hold you back from generating more content. Remember, there are billions of people on the planet and you only have to attract a small portion of that entire population to have them hear your message and buy from you.  Some people don’t realize that they can find content on the Internet, YouTube, Facebook, blogs, etc.  And some people may like your content more than others.  There will be enough people who will like what you have to say.
  • RePurpose Your Content – everywhere and in many different ways. If you write an article, post it on your website’s blog and have it scheduled to post on your social media sites, post it on LinkedIn Pulse,  create a video about it – just like I’m doing here.   You can also post your video to your blog on your website and on your social media sites.  There are many ways to have just one piece of content touch many in a variety of different ways.

Video Biz Tip: Ideas for Creating Content in Your Marketing!

If you are struggling to come up with content topics, I recommend you develop a list with the top 12 topics that would make sense for you to talk about. For example, if you are in the Beauty Industry, your topics might include: skincare, chemicals in products, hairstyles, etc.   Got it?  Now take each of your top 12 topics and break down each topic into 3-5 sub-topics because your main topic might be too broad to use. Sometimes you’ll be able to break down your sub-topics include 3-5 additional sub-topics.  This method will give you more options to create content about.

You don’t have to write all of your content.  You can record yourself talking about it and have it transcribed.  Once you edit the transcription, it becomes a form of written content.  I hope this gets your juices flowing and get your content ideas going.

Do you have a strategy or do you just send emails out hap-hazardly?

Most entrepreneurs I see in my coaching business or who attend my live events are doing the latter. Of course what you want to do is have a big picture strategy first, then the actual getting it done becomes a lot easier.

Now, email marketing is just ONE piece of the overall pie that your business would want to be focusing on for marketing but you want to maximize your time with it so it doesn’t take up too much time either. There is more to do than just this one marketing and follow up strategy…

In order to have a good, efficient and results-oriented email marketing strategy you want to consider and/or implement the following things:

  1. Have an approved list – make sure the people you are sending emails to regularly via your email marketing system or service have agreed either in person, verbally or opted in on your website to receive your emails. Otherwise if they have not, you are spamming, plain and simple. (See my Ultimate Marketing Follow Up System though to know what to do with those non-opted-in people however because you can entice them to want to get your emails but it’s very strategic messaging you’ll want to use.)
  2. Plan out your content – using a Content Marketing Calendar is best when you’re not as accustomed to delivering regular emails to your list. This way you have special themes or promotions planned out and it’s easier to figure out what to write or talk about each month in your emails.
  3. Make sure you do use an actual email marketing program such as either a shopping cart such as Jumpstart Shopping Cart or a service that just sends approved emails for you such as Constant Contact, Aweber or MailChimp.
  4. Develop some templates for you to use for emailing. I always recommend having a newsletter looking template with sections and header and then also more of a casual template or announcement template with little branding and structure.
  5. Set a schedule for when you’ll send what and stick to it. You really need to touch your subscribers more than just once a month so a newsletter every other week is recommended to start. You can do weekly with less content if you’d like but it’s not necessary.
  6. Delegate whatever you don’t like to do or want to do regarding sending out your emails. I do recommend you try to develop the content as much as you can especially if your business features you. Dealing with the technology however or putting the components of your email together to send out could be something someone else does.
  7. Always pay attention to creating really attention getting subject lines so your emails are more likely to get opened.
  8. Finally, check your statistics often and revise your approach and strategy as needed. You’ll see which topics your subscribers gravitate towards more plus other stats to help you develop more content or even paid programs and products.
