One of my favorite guest speaker interviews was with Adam Hommey, host of Business Creators Radio Show.  Adam’s audience consists of business owners and entrepreneurs who want to hear about tools, techniques and strategies to help them build their businesses.

The top and frequently asked questions from business owners revolve around time and money issues.  Time and Money issues are where many of them get stuck.

Attracting more clients and making more money are issues that all small business owners face no matter what is going on in the economy.  There are several things that can get in the way of many business owners doing just those two things.  They include things like:

  • Bright Shiny Objects that will distract you;
  • Implementing the wrong tasks or actions and implementing them the wrong way;
  • Trying to do everything yourself.

When I’m working with a client, I will discuss with them all of the things they need to do or start doing to transform their business, take it to the next level, etc.  And because we are all so crazy busy, I usually hear objections about having enough time.  For those clients with time issues,  I start them out with “clearing space”.   That means the client is to review everything they are doing and decide if it’s something that’s still important for them to do, what they can delegate it, what they can automate and systemitize, and so on.   It’s really about clearing things off of your plate to see where you can get back a couple of hours every day.

This clearing space process works well.  After working on clearing space for one year, one of my clients’ reclaimed 8 hours per week back in her life because we automated, systemitized and delegated many of the things in her business that she had formerly spent time on.

Most people want to get more time to do more marketing for their business or to get their life back, spend more time on self-care or with their families.

One way business owner can get more time is to learn how to say “No” to some things so they can say “Yes” to other things that are a better fit.

I have my clients create vision boards to stay focused on the BIG Picture; what’s really important to them so they don’t lose their focus and get bogged down in the minutia of day to day tasks.

Another great way to find more time is to learn to calendar your life. Now I realize many people don’t like that kind of structure but I challenge them to calendar everything for one month. This helps you learn how to block your time.

Why should you consider changing your business model to include Leveraged Programs?

Getting Over the Guilt

It’s time for you to Get Over the Guilt That Keeps You from Loving Yourself and Doing What You Really Want To Do!

Today I want to talk to you about that pesky 5 letter word that a lot of us let get in our way to getting what we want or doing something about it.

It’s GUILT.

It’s a dangerous little word frankly. Especially when it comes to the guilt that you may have in NOT doing what you say you’re going to do, letting yourself down, not holding yourself accountable to what you know you need to do.

This is the worst kind of guilt because we never really end up letting it go. Not good.

I have clients who feel guilty when:

  • They schedule a call with me and miss it.
  • Set a goal for themselves and don’t hit it or let themselves be distracted so they don’t even do the stuff needed to achieve the goal.
  • Set intentions to do something but never follow through.
  • Keep saying they want “X” and I give them the steps to take or action plan to get that but they never take even one step, or maybe they take one but then stop.

And there’s all kinds of other things that can make us feel guilty, regardless if anyone knows about it too right?

So, you must know that feelings of guilt are not healthy for you right?  Not healthy or productive.

They aren’t motivating, in fact they are deflating!   They take the wind out of your sail. They make you do things like maybe binge eat, freeze up, or go into a depression and retreat from friends or support.

But how can you let these feelings of guilt go? They do need to be let go… you can’t hold on to them or they will make you sick and keep you stuck. You have to find a way to get over them, let them go and realize instead that you are on YOUR PATH in life and your business, no one else’s.

You will have YOUR life hiccups and roadblocks unlike anyone else. You will have good things and bad things happen that will deter you from achieving goals, accomplishing tasks, meeting appointments and staying accountable. If this never happened to you, you wouldn’t be human.

Therefore, why not focus on WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY.  Not what didn’t happen yesterday or last month or even last year.

Today is a new day, new month and new year. You can make new goals, move deadlines and readjust your plans for moving forward. You have the power to do so, it just takes a decision.

Here’s a 6-step process that you can take to help you get out of that guilt mindset and start appreciating yourself and what you DO accomplish more.

  1. Take a Little Time For Self-Reflection And Finding The Guilt That’s Holding You Back
  2. Dig Deep And Find The Reason For The Guilt
  3. Forgive Yourself And Start Loving The Real You
  4. Take A Few Baby Steps Toward Your Big Goals
  5. Watch Out – Those Guilty Feelings Will Try To Sneak Back Into Your Life
  6. Confidence Is Your Secret Weapon To Building The Live Of Your Dreams – get a good support system around you such as family, loved ones but also a supportive coach can help, a group of peers and clients. When you have positive role models and “cheerleaders” in your corner you can really start believing more in yourself and you’ll be more motivated to do what you need to do regardless of “life”.

It’s January which means it’s a great time to discuss your plans for the new year. Today I’m talking about the difference between visioning and planning.

Most of you have probably completed your Big Picture Planning for 2018.  Maybe you’ve also worked on a Vision Board. I’m sure some of you already have a picture in your mind where you want to be at the end of this year. That’s all great!

My interpretation of Visioning is seeing yourself where you want to be with Big Picture Items, Events or things that you want that are not tied to something measurable like a time line or a number goal.

With visioning, we see big things we want to happen, but we just don’t know how or when they will happen. For example:

  • About 10 years ago I wanted a Lexus. I didn’t have enough money to buy it at that time. Once I did have enough money to pay cash for it, I bought my Lexus.
  • I also had Oprah on my Vision Board about 9 years ago. I wanted to meet Oprah and be on her show. An opportunity presented itself where I could go to Chicago to see a couple of tapings of her show and while there, I was invited to be on her Radio Show.

Like many of you, I keep my Vision Boards next to my workspace so I can see them every day!

Planning is very important for your business and personal life. I’m not talking about resolutions but plans that help you reach your goals.

Get your Free Downloadable S.M.A.R.T. Goals Worksheet here!

Stop Talking about Your Goals Like They’re Dreams…Get ‘Em Done Instead

You’ve probably heard of S.M.A.R.T goals before…and that’s because it’s a formula that works. Here’s an overview:

SPECIFIC – Your goal needs to be spelled out very precisely and you also need to have a reason WHY behind your goal…some benefit or emotional attachment that will keep you focused. For example, a goal might be to earn $12,500 per month and onboard 5 new quality clients monthly in the next 90 days.

Using language that leaves no doubt as to what the goal is, why you want to achieve the goal, and how you will get there is very important. If you are not able to be detailed in your description of the goal, it will be hard to meet it. Take the time to do this part right.

MEASURABLE – This is where the Journal comes into play. It’s a report card and a method to measure what you want to accomplish and what you actually accomplished. If your goal cannot be quantified, then it’s not a full goal and you won’t know how when you have succeeded. An example of a measurable goal would be “I want to deposit to our bank account an additional 100 dollars per week. I’ll accomplish this by writing five 500-word articles each week for a life coach.”

ACTIONABLE / ACHIEVABLE – There are different things that “A” can stand for, but it’s usually actionable or achievable. In order to achieve anything, you must take action. So, make your goal actionable, where you do something each day that will eventually result in an accomplished goal.

Goals should also be achievable or you will quickly get frustrated. Be accurate about the time it takes to reach a goal, and what actions it takes to get there. Also, know who will be responsible for doing it.

REALISTIC / RELEVANT – “R” can stand for realistic or relevant, and both are important. If you want your goal to succeed, it should most certainly be realistic or you will fail. If you’re currently making $500 a week and your goal is to increase that to $12,500 in 90 days, that’s not realistic. However, you may be able to increase it by $300. Once you achieve that goal and are earning $800 a week, you can set a new goal to increase your income by another $500 a week or something similar.

Your goal should also be relevant to your life’s vision and match your values. There’s no point in making or achieving goals that have no relevance to your long-term life goals. You could instead use that time to reach goals that get you one step closer to actually reaching your life goals. So always ask yourself, if the goal is relevant to your life goals.

TIME BOUND / TIMELY / TRACKABLE – Various authors refer to the “T” in the S.M.A.R.T. acronym as time-bound, timely or trackable. All of these t’s are important parts of the goal creating and setting process. If you don’t set a time limit and you can’t track what is happening, your goal will be hard to quantified or show as achieved.

“The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”

How many times have we heard that? In school, in business, at home when we hear ourselves saying it to our children or ourselves? Reminding ourselves that we shouldn’t leave things undone. Get busy. Get in motion. Get something done, don’t just talk about it. So then, what it should really say is, “The Road to Hell is paved with procrastination.”

The Road to Success is paved with good intentions! Especially when it comes to referral marketing.

If building referral marketing success is a process of developing and using business contacts as a way to build business, then the road to Success should be paved with good intentions. Or more specifically; good intent. Having good intentions is the base gravel for the road and dictates the strength of the foundation on which the referral marketing traffic is going to travel.

What is your true intent in regards to your referral marketing activities? Are you engaged in a process of motivating your referral partners by truly helping them, or are you just doing the minimum to maintain the relationship?

People will eventually see through a facade. Are you practicing open, honest communication with those in your referral network? Having a foundation of good intentions is essential in traveling a smooth road to referral marketing success.

Honest, good intent will help you avoid common referral marketing mistakes.

Good intent will keep you from pouncing on potential new referrals, pushing them away or forcing a referral that isn’t quite ready yet. Try to make sure the true intent was not just to make yourself look good in your referral network.

Passing a referral at your meeting might feel good, but it does not help the person being referred and can in fact damage the very relationship you’re trying to build.

This one should be easy, but is often overlooked, especially by those new to the referral marketing process: Good intent should keep you from meeting with people in your referral network for a one-to-one and then trying to sell them your goods or services.

The one-to-one meeting is about building a relationship and if you are immediately trying to sell to people in your referral network, it will quickly be public knowledge that your intent is really just to sell.

Where the rubber meets the road. Sometimes looking in the mirror can be tough, but try doing a thorough examination. Be careful not to misdiagnose your intent.

Are you really involving yourself to help others as a means of growing your own business? Notice the “help others” comes first in that statement. Selfless giving is not always hereditary, it can be developed, and it really is essential to building good will with people you are trying to do business with by referral.

Finally, old adages don’t die easily. The road to hell is paved with procrastination. New habits take exercise and the more you exercise good intentions the more success you should see, just ahead.

Many of you know about the Sacramento Speaker and Entrepreneur Network Meetup that I hold monthly here in the Sacramento area. This group is open to those who are new or experienced speakers who meet to network with each other, collaborate, share resources and who want to learn more about speaking in their business.

My answer was a resounding “No!” Over time, I’ve developed a bad habit of staying in bed after the alarm goes off; it’s just so easy to hit the “snooze” button!

But the question posed by the coach at our table aroused my curiosity to the point that I began researching the topic of morning routines when I returned home. What I found is that most of us do not engage in or practice a morning routine.

Set Your Morning, Set Your Day

A routine will help keep you focused on your most important tasks and you’ll be less likely to let distractions knock you off track. Many experts say a morning routine will help you prepare for your day. It’s helps you be proactive and can increase productivity and energy levels. A morning plan also helps you take care of yourself, first.

Many successful people who depend on their A.M. routines are Former President Obama, Steve Jobs, Tony Roberts, just to name a few.

Steps to Create your Morning Routine

1. Prepare the night before. This helps decrease the number of decisions you have to make in the morning, boosting your chance of success.

  • Make a commitment to rise at a specific time.
  • Move your alarm away from your bed because this forces you to get up.
  • Set out your clothes and anything else you’ll need the next day

2. Stay hydrated – drink a large glass of water upon rising.
3. Valuable activities to do in your routine:

  • Meditate or sit in silence.
  • Express gratitude.
  • Write goals.
  • Exercise.
  • Visualize your successful day.

4.  Last but not least important – you’ll need to get up earlier than you do now.

The coach who posed the morning routine question to us at the luncheon recommended “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod. She thought this book would help jumpstart my day with focus. And she was right!

Since reading the book, I’m surprised that I no longer hate getting up at 5:30 a.m. I used to loathe rising early because I had to leave home at 6:15 for my 50-mile drive to work (ugh, how did I ever do that?). I was also a terrible sleeper which didn’t help.

I’m happy to report that after only 8 days into my new morning routine, I’m actually enjoying it. I’ll continue to keep you updated on my progress from time to time.
