Have you heard about the new Placer County People (PCP) business community? Eric Lofholm and I are the founders of PlacerCountyPeople.com. Both of us live, do business and hold live events in the Placer County area.

Eric and I envision this to be a way to showcase the locals in Placer County by creating a virtual venue to host information about the local podcast we’re launching to feature interviews of local residents and businesses. We’ve created the Placer County People website and established PCP social media group as a way to publicize information about community events such as networking events, monthly live socials and business events too!

Most of you know my story and what I do to help business owners attract clients and make more money. For those of you who didn’t know, Eric Lofholm is a master sales trainer who honed his skills as a trainer for Tony Robbins from 1997 to 1999 before founding his own company, Eric Lofholm International. Eric has trained people from over 500 different companies including: Aflac, Prudential, & Morgan Stanley just to name a few.

Check out the video below to hear more about the launch of Placer County People Community!

A really cool feature we’ve included is that anyone is welcome to join the Placer County People Community by simply signing up for our email updates on the website at PlacerCountyPeople.com and click here to join our Facebook Group .

Our plans for the Placer County People Podcast is to highlight individuals, influential people, business owners, organizations and causes. If your event would be beneficial to the Placer County community or it has an important aspect for the local residents and business owners, I encourage you to submit your information to be one of our upcoming podcast guests. All submissions will be considered so don’t be shy. You can submit to be one of our podcast guests by clicking placercountypeople.com/podcastguestsubmission .

I’m inviting you to check out the website at PlacerCountyPeople.com –> sign up for updates, join the Facebook Group, come to the events, send your submission to be a podcast guest and start doing some serious networking with this group!  You’ll get more exposure for your business, company, or cause and you’ll have a lot of fun while meeting others in this community.

Today I’m sharing marketing tips that all small business owners should be spending time on.

marketingMost small business owners focus their efforts in only one area – going after new business. But by solely focusing on acquiring new business, there’s a tendency to forget or to be inconsistent with marketing to their contact databases or referral sources. Those are two areas that are the easiest to go after.

The 3 Types of Marketing You Should Focus On

  1. Database Marketing
  2. Referral Source Marketing
  3. New Business Marketing

Your Database Marketing is marketing to everyone you know…, regardless of your relationship. This includes your hair dresser, dentist, neighbors and friends. Keep in mind that it’s likely that everyone you know could be a potential prospect or referral source.

Database Marketing needs to be done via email, mail, phone, social media, and in person visits – the more ways the better! Your ultimate goal is to be top of mind with everyone you know all of the time so you are the first person they of if they know needs your products or services.

Database Marketing Methods:

  • Send out bi-weekly or weekly emails (monthly is not frequent enough for most businesses);
  • Hold regular teleclasses or events they can attend for free or paid;
  • Mail to them often and consistently;
  • Make reminder phone calls and follow up calls;
  • Connect with them on the social media sites you belong to or where they’ll see you most often;
  • Drop by their offices or drop materials by their homes can be effective, if it’s a good fit.

Your Referral Source Marketing is marketing to all those individuals, companies or groups that directly market to your target market.

These are complementary businesses to yours or big fans of yours that will be most likely to refer business to you. You want to go through your database and build a list of these people, companies or groups that you can market to. You can also do a Google search by industry or type of business or person to find or connect with more individuals or companies to add to your Referral Source list to market to.

The marketing messages that you’ll send to Referral Sources will greatly differ from the ones you send to your regular database of prospects and contacts, and will be very different from the ones you send to new businesses.

Referral Source Marketing Methods can Include any or all of the above plus:

  • Invite referral sources to be guest on your teleclasses, radio or TV show, or speak at your events (and offer to do the same for them);
  • Invite referral sources to use your articles or content in their email newsletters, blogs or websites (and offer to do the same);
  • Build an automated online referral program (typically called an Affiliate Program) that can track referrals;
  • Send referral sources pre-written email or web copy or mailed materials they can send out to promote your products, services, events or classes (making sure you have a tracking system in place of course to reward the ones who send you business);
  • Connect with them on social media, letting them know online when something comes up they can promote, comment on or share with their followers.

Your New Business Marketing will consist more of direct marketing to your targeted list of prospects. You can buy a list if you want so you can do a mailing but make sure you’re very clear on the demographics and psychographics of your prospects in order to narrow the list down.

New Business Marketing Methods can include any or all of the above plus:

  • Social networking is one of the most popular ways to do this today. There are hundreds of sites and places to find prospects online but you’ll need to be efficient with your time. You can easily get sucked in and spend too much time on social media. Go searching with a goal of who you want to connect with, where you want to drive them to (ie; your website, opt in box, call with you, etc.) and have an appropriate way to introduce yourself without being too self-promoting.
  • Find blogs and groups or forums online where your target market congregates and post on them often. Ask and answer questions. Learn how to become an expert on that site and if possible, submit content. Share your expertise.
  • Speak, sponsor or network at events where your target market will be in attendance. Learn how to “work the room” however so you can meet and connect with as many people as possible.
  • Run advertisements in your local area or even national publications or online publications that reach your ideal prospects.

Keep in mind that for all types of marketing, the goal should be to get them into your mailing list and into your email database so that you can continue to market to them. But never rely solely on email marketing to reach all of these people, not in this era; you have to connect with them in many different ways if you really want to be seen. You’ve got to build relationships with them over time and that is the most effective way to market to anyone. People will do business with people they like, trust and connect with so make it easy for them to do business with you and refer their friends to you too!

I know lots of people suggest you should be blogging if you’re not already, right? They also say you should post something on your blog at least 3 times a week, right?

blog bloggingIt is a really great strategy to use in your marketing but it’s ONLY ONE of the tens of strategies you really SHOULD be doing every month. You just need to find the easiest way to do more of them faster or in more of an automated way.

So here are some things you’ll want to know about blogging whether you’re doing it or not and then I’m happy to share with you too later on how to automate it more so it’s not taking too much of your time. Because the reality is that just the act of blogging alone won’t really bring in a lot of clients.

You have to have your blogging woven in and out of multiple marketing strategies, your website, follow up, social media and more in order for it to work as an income generator.

It does do many things for you however regardless, such as:

  • #1. You will engage your readers and prospects into conversations and action.
  • #2. You will build a community of followers, fans and supporters.
  • #3. You will be in more places at one time expanding your reach globally.
  • #4. You will prove yourself as an expert.
  • #5. You will reach people who don’t want to receive your emails perhaps; some people don’t want to read emails and newsletters, they prefer to read quick blog posts.
  • #6. You will increase your sales as more people read your articles and learn to like and trust you.
  • #7. You can manage it easily and quickly if you have the right systems in place!

What do you need to do though ON your blog to make sure it’s successful?

  • You must have an opt in box in addition to blog subscription option;
  • You should allow comments to encourage reader interaction;
  • You should have videos of yourself for more interaction;
  • You could highlight one of your products or services to get them to click over to your site and for more info;
  • You can put all kinds of ‘widgets’ on your blog to attract more attention, provide more interaction and even build a revenue stream.

How to know what to post and say on your blog to keep the content fresh?

–>> Watch my emails and my blog posts; I share tips all the time about content generation!

In the meantime, this is just ONE of the hundreds of things you could be doing to attract more clients and generate more income for yourself so don’t get too caught up with the management of it on a day to day basis, just get something going for now and be relatively active to start.

blog marketing If you are ready to get serious about your business and put a real marketing and business Action Plan into place and learn EXACTLY how all of these multiple marketing strategies will be implemented into your business either by you or someone you outsource to…. As an entrepreneur or small business owner you probably already know you need to be blogging but you may not know what to blog about. At least that’s the #1 question I get asked about when this topic comes up in my trainings.

Blogging is one of the necessary marketing strategies you really should be doing these days and it can be easy to accomplish with the right action plan. Let me explain.

First of all, why do we want to blog? Here are the Top 7 Reasons to Blog:

  1. To establish ourselves as experts and get more exposure online
  2. To educate our prospects and followers about things we do or have expertise in
  3. To create a constant flow of relavent content on our websites or online in order to drive more free traffic to our sites
  4. To offer opportunities for prospects and customers to take advantage of our programs, products and services
  5. It’s another way for prospects to find us, follow us and find out more about us
  6. To reach prospects and become known globally
  7. To engage readers into conversations or to take action

What you need to do though ON your blog to make sure it’s successful?

  • You must have an opt in box in addition to blog subscription option
  • You should allow comments to encourage reader interaction
  • You should have videos of yourself so readers can really get to know you
  • You could highlight one or more of your products or services to get them to click over to your website for more info
  • You can put all kinds of ‘widgets’ on your blog to attract more attention, provide more interaction and even build a revenue stream
  • You want to deliver exceptional content and value as well of course
  • You want to try to post content or new posts at least once a week if you can however posting 2-3 times a week is the best practice

How to know what to post and say on your blog to keep the content fresh?

Try making a list of all the big topics you could write about. Anything you have expertise in that relates to what you do or even complimentary type content that your ideal target market would want to hear about that would make sense to include along with what you primarily cover. For example if you speak or coach clients on finding their life purpose, then expand that to other things they need once they find their purpose. Do they need a business plan? Do they need help in their relationships to support them on fulfilling their life purpose?

Either develop content yourself in those other areas or invite other business owners who focus in those areas in their businesses to be guest bloggers on your blog. Obviously ask them to do the same for you and you both then get exposure to new groups of people plus you each populate your own blog with more relevant content. It’s a win-win for both of you. I call this doing a blog swap. It’s a great (and FREE) marketing strategy!
