More often than not, when I speak with newer business owners or those who want to start up a business but aren’t quite ready yet or aren’t sure yet of what kind of business to start…the number one thing the majority of them say about marketing is “when I’m ready to start marketing Katrina, I’ll come to you”.

Before you think you’re ready!!


Because you have to start building a following of people who are interested in your topic matter, your industry, your voice. The sooner you start building a following and start talking to people about what you’re doing, whether you’re doing it yet or not, the sooner you’ll have interested parties to sell to when you’re actually ready – YOU’LL HAVE PROSPECTS!

If you wait until you’re “ready”, first of all that day may never come. I’ve seen it.

Secondly, who’s going to be there to listen to you when you announce that you’re ready? No one, or very little people.

You have to start right away with the marketing, trust me.

Marketing comes BEFORE sales.

  • It’s lead generation
  • It’s relationship building
  • It’s content providing
  • It’s connecting
  • It’s nurturing
  • It’s sharing

It doesn’t mean you have to sell anything yet – but you can!

You can sell your products and services BEFORE you’re ready. You can make money without a website, business card, logo or brochure.

You can “build the plane while you’re flying it” so they say!

I know for some of you with a more corporate or educational background, this concept is a tough one. But trust me, wouldn’t you like to find out if there are people out there who want to buy what you want to sell them BEFORE you spend too much time or money creating whatever IT IS?

Yes, you want to know this.

This is Market Research, part of the marketing process.

Where do you start jumpstarting your business in the first place?

You start by either knowing one or more of the following things somewhat clearly (you don’t have to know all of these however right off the bat, nor do you have to be completely clear about them to start marketing):

  • jump-start-your-biz-logoWho do you want to serve? Who do you enjoy working with or who do you think that will be? What type of person, organization or business is it? What do they care about most in regards to what you’re doing? What problems do they need to solve that are in your wheelhouse?
    • If you’re somewhat clear on the WHO then just find out what they want and figure out then what to sell them (to start) and where to find them.
  • What do you want to offer? Do you have specific products or services that you’re wanting to sell and make money on?
    • If you’re somewhat clear on the WHAT then just go into the marketplace and see who’s buying those and that becomes your WHO – start with the most obvious buyers first.
  • How do you want to work? How you want to work should first determine what types of products and services you offer, what business models you implement and possibly even who you target. Depending on how you want to work, there will be very specific marketing strategies you’ll want to do first, plus you may want to delegate some things more too so you can get farther faster.
    • Do you still have a job and can only work an additional 4 hours a week on your business?
    • Do you have two businesses and trying to juggle what to do with each effectively and consistently?
    • Do you want to only work X number of hours a week, month or year?
