One of the biggest challenges for small business owners when it comes to their website is writing the content for it all. 

This is why sometimes it takes you months and months to get your website up or why your site doesn’t do much for you when it is live.

The content for your website is such a critical part yet you spend so little time on it usually because you don’t know what to do.

I want to give you a quick guide on how to write better content for your website and basically for many of your marketing materials as well.

First of all, it’s important to remember that YOUR WEBSITE IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT MATRKETNG TOOL. You need to treat it as such.

When done right, your website can bring you more leads than you could ever generate yourself any other way. The key is to develop a strategy for your website and how it will fit in with all the other marketing and sales processes that you have (or need to have) in place. Then when you have the strategy, you add details that allow for more interaction, personality and functionality for you and your visitors including forms, opt in boxes, videos, links and more.

Here’s a quick 3 step process for writing content for your website including your home page, about page, all your services or sales pages and even your contact page or other pages.

First of all, you have to capture the visitor’s attention with a big bold headline on the top of EVERY page. Think about what the visitor is doing on the page you’re writing, be it the home page or the about page, etc. What is their question or concern in their mind when they click on it? Address that question or concern (in their words) on the very top in big, bold colored font. That big bold headline has to entice them enough to keep on reading. If it doesn’t, they could leave your page or your site all together right then without reading another word.

Secondly, the copy you write under the big bold headline still has to talk to the visitor’s hot buttons, what matters most to them and why they’re on your site. That means you want to still write about their concerns and questions, agitating their possible situation in regards to what you do. This is NOT yet where you talk about what you offer, do or what you sell. You still have to get them to engage in the copy more with the first few paragraphs of each page so they do feel confident that they’re in the right place, on the right site and that you could have the solution to what their need is or what they were searching for.

Finally, after you’ve interacted more, engaged more with the visitor in your copy and what matters most to them, now you can let them know that you have the solution they’ve been searching for. This is where you share more possibly about your expertise, your services/products or you take them to the next step of where you want them to go on your site. Sometimes the next step (for example on your home page) should be to just recommend they get on your email list and get your freebie up in the opt in box on the top of the page. On the home page especially is NOT normally where you want to try to sell them. The goal of your home page is to get them on your email list so you can continue to market to them in case they leave your site after that.

There’s a lot more to know about writing good content for your website but if you keep this formula in mind when doing so then you should see a much better response on your website than if you didn’t do this.

We’re almost to the half way mark for the year and boy is it flying by!

I wanted to let you in on a little secret that I’m doing right now in my business and it’s about getting back to the basics.

Yes, you heard it here first….the queen of doing all kinds of stuff in her biz is still doing the basics!

Why? Because that what works! (in any economy)

You see, while the leveraged business models are still working, there are some business models that you want to spend your time on and some you ABSOLUTELY DON’T right now….

It’s time to ‘Get Back to the Basics’ of what works in your business, the types of things you’re selling, your marketing, your follow up and your overall effective work habits.

In the last few months every business owner I’ve spoken to has all had the same questions:

“What can I do that will bring me more business, nothing is working?”

“Where should I be focusing in my business, I feel like I’m spinning my wheels?”

“How do I get out of overwhelm? There’s so much to do!”

Well, you’re not alone. However there’s a lot of hypy sales stuff out there that sounds great and sounds like it could help you make millions of dollars but will it really work for YOUR type of business and YOU?

Can you risk it financially right now to ‘try it out’?

Most of you I know cannot; neither do I want to take some of those risks so I’m with you here.

  1. Does my website speak directly to my ideal target client within 3 seconds of them landing on my site? Seriously? Whatever they were searching for or have problems with or needing solutions for has to be so visible and obvious and stand out like a sore thumb when they land on your site. You can’t make them read paragraphs of information before they know if they’re on the right site or not; they won’t do that. They won’t call you either the first time they land on your site, you have to get them to engage immediately with video, forms, and other interactive functionality and headlines, etc.
  2. Do I ask visitors to take action on EVERY page of my website for something I want them to do? You have to invite them to engage with you, sign up for something, send in information, buy something, etc. If you don’t ASK them or entice them on the pages they won’t take action, plain and simple.
  3. Do I have a clear and easy way for someone to get FREE information or resources IMMEDIATELY when they land on my site? On ANY page of my site? Building a list of interested prospects should be your #1 goal of your website. Most websites I look at do not do this effectively.

Why does it matter who you choose to design your website or redesign the one you have?

Because all web designers are NOT created equal!

What I’ve found over the last 8 years of business is: 

– 90% of the web designers out there are NOT sales and marketing focused (which means they will NOT be able to help you figure out the best ways to present your site, write copy for your site or get the best results from your target market)

– Many of them do NOT help you figure out how your website will flow with the rest of your marketing, networking, follow up, direct mailing, speaking, selling, social media, etc. (which means it may not end up helping you to fill your funnel, make sales or build your list)

– 95% of them don’t know what an opt in box is!!!! (this is astounding to me!)

After you find the right web designer (which unfortunately most of us do not the first time around), then you need to also make sure they agree with and/or are aware of the following 17 Crucial Components (otherwise, keep looking ok?).

Your website should:

  1. Be easily found on the search engines
  2. Increase your traffic to your site
  3. Increase your conversions (visitors to your site that sign up on your list)
  4. Be updated regularly with new exciting, keyword rich content
  5. Be professionally designed and maintained (and NOT by YOU!)
  6. Be built with the user in mind
  7. Increase your exposure in your local area or nationwide
  8. Have the functionality that your users need and want
  9. Be extremely attention getting on every page, especially the home page
  10. Have a way for visitors to sign up on your list to build your database
  11. Provide free resources to keep visitors coming back
  12. Provide links and content that generate interest and repeat visits
  13. Continue to build your relationship with visitors, clients and prospects
  14. Have an easy way to contact you, get information, sign up and buy!
  15. Tell your story and why you’re doing what you’re doing
  16. Allow people to trust you and get to know you
  17. Engage and interact with visitors using videos, fill in forms, quizzes and more
  18. Do 100 other things too…but you’ll have to contact me to find out more!
