What’s Up With Kat?

What a nice Father’s Day weekend we had. Although Jason and I didn’t have Riley this weekend, I still spoiled him with a date night, concert in the park and more. What did you do with your special “dad”?

I’m prepping for a new program I’m launching the end of this month….some of my clients have been waiting for me to do this….I can’t tell you just yet what it is but make sure you’re opening the emails!!

We’re almost to the half way mark for the year and boy is it flying by!

I wanted to let you in on a little secret that I’m doing right now in my business and it’s about getting back to the basics.

Yes, you heard it here first….the queen of doing all kinds of stuff in her biz is still doing the basics!

Why? Because that what works! (in any economy)

You see, while the leveraged business models are still working, there are some business models that you want to spend your time on and some you ABSOLUTELY DON’T right now….

It’s time to ‘Get Back to the Basics’ of what works in your business, the types of things you’re selling, your marketing, your follow up and your overall effective work habits.

In the last few months every business owner I’ve spoken to has all had the same questions:

“What can I do that will bring me more business, nothing is working?”

“Where should I be focusing in my business, I feel like I’m spinning my wheels?”

“How do I get out of overwhelm? There’s so much to do!”

Well, you’re not alone. However there’s a lot of hypy sales stuff out there that sounds great and sounds like it could help you make millions of dollars but will it really work for YOUR type of business and YOU?

Can you risk it financially right now to ‘try it out’?

Most of you I know cannot; neither do I want to take some of those risks so I’m with you here.

What I’m suggesting is getting back to the basics, getting back to building and cultivating relationships with everyone you know. I know you know this, but I’ll bet you’re NOT REALLY DOING THIS?

No entrepreneur I see is doing enough personal connecting, following up, promotion and marketing and most of this little to no money.

You need the RIGHT PLAN of action to show you which steps to take so you can get moving – you need to do BOTH offline and online marketing activities these days to really get where you need to go. That plan needs to consist of many basics – its the marketing basics that will pull you through this tough time. It’s the marketing basics that I’ve been doing since day one in my business and will continue to do every year….because they work.

  • Drop-bys
  • Direct Mail
  • Phone calls
  • Advertising
  • Referral rewards
  • In store Promotions
  • Publicity
  • Live Events / Tradeshows
Basics of Online Marketing Could Include:
  • Social Media
  • Websites – professionally built and copywritten
  • Opt-in boxes, online offers
  • Shopping Carts, Email Marketing Programs
  • Blogging
  • Video Marketing – youtube
  • Article Marketing
  • Webinars / Teleclasses
  • eBooks and info-products
  • Search engine optimization
  • Web directories
And more on each really….there is so much one small business can do these days but how do you know what to implement FIRST!?
If you implement the above strategies OUT OF ORDER in your business then you may waste a lot of time and money without seeing RESULTS. I want to prevent that from happening to you….

Do you have spring fever yet?

I’ve been starting to get it….looking out into the nice sunny day from my office window, feeling the cool breezes in the early morning come through the windows and doors….it’s nice working from home but I’m going to have to schedule in some *enjoy* time in the am I think a few times a week.

What are you looking forward to this spring/summer?

I’m looking forward to some quality family stuff – I’m going to be meeting my boyfriend’s sister and her husband when I’m up in Portland mid-May. Then next weekend we get to do a Six Flags day out with Riley (I hope my new hip hangs in there all day for that!). And in June we’re spending some time in Tahoe with Jason’s whole family. (Tahoe is so beautiful that time of year)

PLUS I’m really looking forward to ALL THE SPEAKING opportunities that I have coming up! There are a TON!

Many entrepreneurs wonder how much to share with their clients, and for good reason.  If you’ve ever wondered how much of yourself to share, and how it affects your credibility, then this article will surely shed some light on this topic for you.

When it comes to being authentic in your marketing and communication with your clients, you don’t have to share everything.  Sometimes, it’s not in service of them to do so. It doesn’t mean you’re holding back if you don’t want to be public with everything.  Private lives are okay!

However, being a little edgy with your sharing can really help your clients to relate to you, to know that you understand them, and to feel even more connected with your message.

Here are a couple of tips that will help you decide what to share:

Tip #1: Share things your clients can learn from

It is of great service of your clients to share mistakes you made, what you learned from it, and what you can teach them as a result of it. 

For instance, let’s say you teach about how to maintain balance, and last week you worked 90 hours, never left your house, and didn’t shower for 4 days.  (It happens.)

A great article or talk could tell your clients something like:

“Look, balance is not always on an every day basis.  Last week I was in the middle of a huge project and worked super hard, but I realized that one week of “full steam ahead” would provide me with 2 weeks of lightening up my schedule.

So I finished my project, scheduled an entire day unplugged, got a massage, and curled up with ‘50 shades of gray’ for a few hours.  It was awesome, and I had accomplished a lot.  I celebrated myself.

It’s important to remember the first and most important quality of balance is to not beat up on yourself, know that at times you’ll get busy, and make sure to plan some down time.  Then, return to your balanced life the following week.”

You’re sharing with them that they don’t have to be perfect and give them permission to fall off the horse from time to time.  You can then, lovingly encourage them to keep getting back on track.

Tip #2: Share things your clients can relate to

Let’s take the same scenario.  You teach about balance.  In your “story” you may not want to share about the crack problem you had in 1983.  This has nothing to do with them, and what their issues are.

But you CAN share about how you worked 90 hours a week for a year, burned yourself out, had to learn the skills you now teach, and how it helped you.

Remember to keep your shares relevant, turn your “mistakes” into teaching moments, and be open to showing them that if you don’t do things perfectly all the time, they can still have an amazing life!

As a small business owner, what I’ve seen is that you typically could use more direct advice, feedback and training, specifically for YOUR business in order to know what to do and how to do it. You don’t need huge group programs where you get lost in the shuffle. Regardless if they are less expensive, trust me, it’s not the best route to go if you need to make money pretty quickly and you need to know where to focus to do that (i.e. marketing activities, website, etc.).
