Defining your business’ target market is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to any small business.  

Your “target customers” are those who are most likely to buy from you. Resist the temptation to be too general in the hopes of getting a larger slice of the market. Try to describe them with as much detail as you can, based on your knowledge of your product or service and how it will benefit them. There are billions of people out there and you only need a very, very small percentage.

Ask yourself some questions to help you define your best target market:

  •  Are your target customers male or female? Figure 75-80% of your target customers would be which? If it’s split, narrow it down another way but more than likely you can narrow down the gender.
  • How old are they? Give an age range of 10-20 years max, otherwise you might have two target markets. Remember, the marketing messages towards different age groups will be quite different most likely depending on your product or service.
  • Where do they live? Is geography a limiting factor for any reason? Can you narrow it down to specific zip codes or counties? The larger the geographical area you choose the more people you will find but the less likely you’ll be able to afford to market to all of them so narrow it down and expand out later. If you can work with anyone anywhere then you’ll want to narrow down your target market another way.
  •  What do they do for a living? You can get a mailing list by industry or profession and specific title for example if you know this. You can also do searches on social media sites these days by industry or profession. Do some searches and find huge pockets of people to connect with.
  •  What does their specific profession say about their lifestyle? Is it very busy with little time to shop? Do they use the Internet for their shopping, researching, news and event information? Would they be commuting more in their car? Do they read publications or listen to certain radio shows or online shows?
  •  How much money do they make? This could be significant if you’re selling relatively expensive services, products or luxury items. Most people can afford a latte. You can’t say the same of custom cars. Narrow this down to a specific range if you can and figure out where the majority of those people are looking, searching or hanging out.
  •  Are there kids in the household? What ages might they be? How many would there likely be? What does this say about their lifestyle – are they carpooling, or soccer parents where they are rarely home? Do they possibly eat out a lot or have less ‘family’ bonding time? Or are they empty nesters where they might spend more time at home watching television, traveling or reading?

What other aspects of their lives matter? Here are some examples to think about, see how your target market compares or how you can get more specific with them.

  • You may need to then get more specific
  •  If you’re launching a roof-tiling service, your target customers probably own their homes. In addition, they probably own homes with older roofs; you can get a list of homes by their age.
  •  If you’re a realtor, you might be interested in targeting first time homebuyers in which case you might find them to be likely to live in apartments or rentals of which you can get a list of those too.
  • If you’re selling your own individual artwork but you can’t create multiple paintings with the same picture, you may try to sell the unique pieces at local art shows rather than selling them online.
  •  If you’re a direct jewelry consultant needing women to gather for parties in someone’s home, you’ll want to go where many women meet like mom’s groups, women’s professional organizations or day cares.
  • If you’re a business or life coach and want to coach only over the phone then you’ll most likely want to do more online marketing and make sure to have a really top notch website since that’s mostly what people are going to see for their first impression. You can network locally too but the more ‘known’ and credible you are online; the more people will want to do business with you.
  • If you’re planning to open a custom-tailoring shop and need busy executives to come for three fittings, you may need to limit it to your local area.

 Everything you do in your marketing, advertising, design, publicity and networking will depend on who your target market is and what matters to them. Making decisions on your marketing and advertising without fully defining your target market or knowing them in depth could be detrimental to your business and YOU COULD BE MAKING SOME COSTLY MISTAKES!

Our prospects (yours and mine) are very busy. People are busier than ever these days and we have to get really good at speaking directly to them with their language, not ours.

This is why this week I wanted to share more with you about what’s so important about your Target Market. What we need to think about, write about, sell, give and say so they pay attention more, engage with us more and then take action and buy! I have a video with different tips on this topic too.

Have you been trying to get yourself some speaking opportunities (I call them gigs) but you’re not having the best of luck getting booked?

Are you wondering how becoming a speaker will generate more business for you or why it’s such an important marketing strategy?

Well, I’ll tell you; I get most of my coaching clients and even most of my paying customers for other products and programs from speaking gigs. Sometimes they hear me speak in person at a conference or business event. Sometimes they hear me speak over the phone on a teleclass or webinar. Either way, being a speaker allows me to be the expert in my industry or on my topic. It brings credibility to what I do, who I am and it allows people to experience me quicker than if there were to just read a page or two on my website.

When people get to hear you or watch you for a longer period of time than just a quick hello or introduction it gives them more of a sense of what you do, how you can help them and they can make a more informed decision on if or how they want to work with you. I highly recommend adding speaking to your overall marketing strategies if you’re a small business owner.

In fact, I just developed a new speaker training course on this topic because all my coaching clients were needing to learn what to do to become a speaker. I developed the following 6 Step Process.

Step 1: Determine WHO you’ll talk to and what do they want to hear. Ask yourself “What are you an expert in? or Who is your target market and where will we find groups of them? What do they care about exactly that relates somewhat to what you do?“

Step 2: Develop your speaking topics and speaker sheet. It’s important to BE PREPARED for speaking opportunities at all times if you expect to get any. You want to have a professional speaker sheet ready to email someone who wants to book you that includes your topics, descriptions, bullets of what they’ll learn, your bio, picture and contact information at the very least.

Step 3: Strategize on where to get gigs. You’ll need to build a list of potential events, organizations or meetings that you can speak for locally, nationally and virtually. There are easy ways to find places but you need to do your due diligence if you want to get booked.

Step 4: Craft your presentations. It’s important to create your speaking presentations so that they are educational, informative, memorable and they make the audience take the action you want them to take at the end. Whether you’re making a sales pitch at the end or not, how you design your talk is crucial to your success.

Step 5: Design your accompanying marketing materials. Often times you’ll want handouts, flyers, order forms or table display materials for when you attend a live speaking event (as well as virtual – what to do online). Again, if you’re not prepared with these things then you’ll most likely waste your time doing the speaking in the first place.

Step 6: Following up after a speaking gig. Most speakers don’t do this well at all and it could be more important than what you do AT the event itself. Developing a kick-butt follow up plan for after an event will provide ongoing lead generation and sales.

Hopefully this gives you some idea on what to get started doing to jumpstart yourself as a speaker.

Remember though, speaking is just ONE type of marketing strategy that you may want to do in your small business. Generally you need to do 5-15 marketing strategies every month in order to maximize your potential.

When I first found out how much money I could truly make as a coach and entrepreneur I was shocked.

No one in my family that I knew of ever made over $150,000 or so. It wasn’t in my thinking that I’d probably do that in my lifetime but now it’s a reality (and then some!).

One of my first mentors in the Internet Marketing world taught me about living life to the fullest. But also living it like you had it all today and not waiting for it to come to live a full life, but to live it now.

Now, granted, when this all came about the economy was booming and entrepreneurs I met were making tons of money. People were spending money on the Internet like crazy and if you were remotely savvy with your business online you could do well.

So I learned about “Living the Life” when times were good. What I was shown was that living the life meant to:

  • Fly first class
  • Stay in the nicest hotels
  • Treat myself to massages and pampering often
  • Take regular vacations
  • Experience fine dining
  • Splurge on myself and give generously to others as well
  • Upgrade to VIP status whenever possible

Keep in mind I came from a world of buying in bulk, using coupons and shopping for good deals. It was strange splurging so much to me, fun but strange. I spent a lot of money during those few years in my business and life and with that mentor’s guidance.

Unfortunately it didn’t really result in a more profitable business by doing all that, just the depletion of much of my savings. The money wasn’t coming in as fast as “they” said it would even though I was doing all the right things and I wondered, “Was this really living the life?”

What did living the life mean to me?

A few years ago when the economy started to take a turn, I did a lot of soul searching and work on myself and what I truly wanted.

I discovered my definition of living the life.

Living the life now means to me:

  • Enjoying life’s experiences with someone you love so deeply
  • Surrounding yourself with positive people, family, friends and good times
  • Not having to worry about bills and money
  • Being able to buy basically what I want when I want it but using coupons and special offers to get MORE bang for my buck
  • Having the benefit of good health
  • And upgrading to club levels in hotels or to first class on occasion when a good deal falls in my lap (which I wrote this initially from a first class flight I got for an extra $90!)

I deserve to life the life of my dreams and so do you….so go make it happen!

Speaking is one of the least expensive, most effective marketing strategies you can do in your business. If you’re already speaking then great, what I’m sharing in this article could be a good reminder for you.

If you are not speaking yet, then why not? Are you afraid of speaking or getting in front of an audience? Are you unsure of what to speak about or to whom or saying to yourself “who would care about what I have to say?”

Regardless of what you do in business you may want to consider speaking. Speaking allows you to be the expert in front of your prospects and peers. It gives you instant credibility and trust with the audience. And it speeds up the buying process when someone likes, trusts and is able to connect with you personally.

One of the biggest mistakes I see many speakers making however, is that they are rarely ever prepared for opportunities that may arise at any time.

Being prepared as a speaker will get you into more doors, position yourself as a professional to the people booking you to speak and it will allow you less stress and freedom to take advantage of all kinds of opportunities whenever they come up.

Here are a few things you want to make sure you have prepared:

  1. Professional speaker sheet – with your bio and/or introduction and your talk title and description at the very least. You can add references, additional talk descriptions and places you’ve spoken too if you like and you have.
  2. Professional head shot – easily downloadable from your website or emailable
  3. One to five (max) talk topics and descriptions – you can have more than one if it makes sense for your business and what you speak on are all complimentary to some extent. If you’re just starting out, start with one signature talk however to make your life easier.
  4. Cover letter or email prewritten and ready to go – include all attachments and information someone would need to decide whether they want to book you as a speaker or guest.
  5. (Optional) Page on your website talking about you as a speaker – include your talk titles, places you’ve spoken, possibly videos of you speaking and more information someone looking for a speaker could download easily on their own.

Choosing the right signature talk you’d think is the easy part, however it can be the most crucial part of this whole equation, especially if you want to monetize your talk and your time.

You need to prepare what you’ll talk on based on what action you ultimately want the audience to take with you. Do you want them to sign up for your free newsletter? Buy your book or product? Register for your event?

It’s important that you reverse engineer your talk based on what you want the audience to buy or sign up for. This is crucial and another big mistake I see many speakers making. They give a great talk then tag on a pitch to sell something totally different to the end and it feels like a sales pitch. Not good.
