For introverts, these lead generation strategies might not appeal to you….but for me I love what I do!  Everyone needs to learn how to Work the Room at Events & Conferences to generate more leads without being annoying and salesy. You want people to talk to you, right?

I love going to events, conferences and inspiring, supporting, coaching and even converting people to become clients. Why do I go to so many live events, even if I have to travel to get to them? Because it’s the biggest form of lead generation in my business! Remember you have to do more of what works. And this works IF you know how to work the room like I do.

lead generation work the room at eventsHere are my Tips for Working the Room when you are at Networking Events & Conferences:

  1. Start with Serving – have a goal of helping others rather than finding people to buy your stuff, you will attract a lot more people to talk with.
  2. Have good Energy stay in the frame of mind that it will all work out in the end, if you give, you will get. I go in with loving energy to hold space for people who need my help and are struggling, what do your prospects need?
  3. Ask Lots of Questions stop talking about yourself unless asked, ask other questions than just “what do you do?”. To find out if someone might need my help I ask, “what are your biggest challenges in your business or marketing right now?
  4. Seek the Unknown stop sitting with people you know already (unless you invited them as your guest), move around the room at every break to meet and sit with NEW people to meet as many people as possible
  5. Provide Value if someone expresses a challenge or asks a question about something you have expertise in, help them on the spot, give them a few minutes of “free advice or resources”, not just a flyer about your services to buy first.
  6. Get the Verbal Opt In grab everyone’s business card or contact information but remember to ask them if they’d like to receive your free tips, resources, report, audio, video, etc. and get on your email list. Otherwise you cannot add them, this is a verbal opt in; do it to build your list faster and making the follow up easier
  7. Move ON! don’t hang out with the same people the whole time, there are way too many more people to meet – keep moving on. If someone won’t “let you move on” then politely introduce them to someone else and bow out of the conversation (I call that passing them off)

Other Great Strategies for you to try.

  • When Planning Travel to an Out of Town to an Event or Conference – Prepare ahead of time; check the event/conference schedule first. Then start connecting with your contacts and friends in the area to set up additional fun meetups, Tweetups (if you are holding a meetup on Twitter) and networking opportunities. You can advertise your meeting on Meetup, on Twitter, Facebook Events to name a few ways to get exposure for free. Try this the next time you go to a Conference or an out of town Event – it REALLY WORKS!
  • Hosting Networking Opportunities When I’m hosting a fun networking opportunity in the area I’m traveling to, I use Private Message to send a message to people on Facebook or LinkedIn to invite them to a networking opportunity in their area. On Facebook, simply go to business groups that are in the area of your destination. You can see all of the members of groups on Facebook, IF the group is not SECRET. Remember – you are not going to spam them with your business offerings – NO! The intent is that you want to genuinely connect with them and let them know that. You might tell them that you are hosting a business networking event in their area and would love to see them there. Of course, ask them to come and to share the information about the networking event/meetup with their connections/friends. That’s not salesy or pushy. You are attempting to connect with others in a different area. People will respond to you. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this approach – it’s one of my guerilla marketing strategies.
  • Remember Your Marketing Materials When you are attending out of town events – always bring your marketing materials, information, forms! I’ve made THOUSANDS at an event where I was attending and not speaking at, by simply being prepared with a sampling of things that I offer. This person invested $40k in one of my high end programs! So, make sure you have your marketing materials AND your order forms on your high end programs when you are attending events & conferences.
  • Regarding the Verbal Opt-In Here’s a great tip to help you get the VERBAL Opt-in Make sure to take along something to give to those you meet at Live Events, something to induce them to be on your email list. I have created a Cheat Sheet of 17 Revenue Generating Tips that I offer to those I meet who are struggling in their business. I hand these out at the time I’m talking with them in exchange for their business card(s) AND I let them know that they will be receiving additional tips and information from me because I’m going to put them on my email list! (so they can receive the tips) You can also create a CD to take along to hand out. Just make sure the person knows that you will be signing them up on your email list so you can send them whatever you’re offering that will help them. As you know, or should know, you can’t just add someone to your email list just because they’ve exchanged business cards with you. Get the verbal opt-in!

Want to know when to start marketing?

In Part 1 of this article, I covered what marketing really is and how to jumpstart your business and marketing….

Beyond all of that however, where should you start marketing or building a following?

marketing-words-imageIf your goal is to generate cash pretty quickly then I recommend you start marketing in two areas:

  1. Your Database – This should be everyone and anyone you “have access to” or often termed: your circle of influence. This could be anyone you know, do business with, are involved with inside organizations you belong to and even your social media connections. This does not mean you go add them all to an email newsletter database however but consider everyone you know and have access to as potential prospects or referral sources.
    1. Depending on who they are and how you know them then, depends on the approach you use to connect and nurture that relationship. (or market to them)
  2. In Person – You’ll want to meet as many new people as possible and for most small businesses, that means getting out in person where your ideal prospects hang out. When you meet people in person, it’s faster to build relationships where they like, trust and connect with you. Online marketing and connecting typically takes a lot longer.

If your goal is to build the business the right way from the start and you aren’t in urgent need of making money quickly necessarily then here is where I would start:

  1. Building your online presence – This is where most people will go to find out more about you, your products and services, your company, your philosophy, your values, your team, and more. These days people will make buying decisions based on your online presence, especially if they haven’t met you yet in person first.

Your online presence consists of all of the following:

  • Your website
  • Videos of you
  • Your social media profiles and pages
  • Your personality online and what you post or write (or the lack of)
  • Google searches on your name or company name
  • Your reviews or testimonials (or lack of)
  1. From the online presence comes “What you’re selling” – You must make it very clear on what you’re selling or no one will buy much less request more information.

This includes knowing more about and doing well with:

  • JumpStartLogoCopywriting
  • Marketing messages
  • Your unique selling preposition (what makes you different)
  • Making it easy for people to understand what you’re doing, how to get information, how to contact you, how will what you offer benefit them.

I could go on and on here as you can tell but the point is to start marketing now.

Then if you’re not exactly sure what to do to market your business or get started building a following, building relationships and nurturing those relationships over time (which is crucial), then you need to ask for help from a professional.

There is way too much to know or learn about marketing, it would take years trying to figure it all out on your own, why not get a clear plan of action quickly from someone you can trust? It will help give you that jumpstart you want and need and save you a heck of a lot of time and money doing the wrong things.

Want to know when to start marketing?

More often than not, when I speak with newer business owners or those who want to start up a business but aren’t quite ready yet or aren’t sure yet of what kind of business to start…the number one thing the majority of them say about marketing is “when I’m ready to start marketing Katrina, I’ll come to you”.

No!!!

Before you think you’re ready!!

Why?

Because you have to start building a following of people who are interested in your topic matter, your industry, your voice. The sooner you start building a following and start talking to people about what you’re doing, whether you’re doing it yet or not, the sooner you’ll have interested parties to sell to when you’re actually ready – YOU’LL HAVE PROSPECTS!

If you wait until you’re “ready”, first of all that day may never come. I’ve seen it.

Secondly, who’s going to be there to listen to you when you announce that you’re ready? No one, or very little people.

You have to start right away with the marketing, trust me.

Marketing comes BEFORE sales.

  • It’s lead generation
  • It’s relationship building
  • It’s content providing
  • It’s connecting
  • It’s nurturing
  • It’s sharing

It doesn’t mean you have to sell anything yet – but you can!

You can sell your products and services BEFORE you’re ready. You can make money without a website, business card, logo or brochure.

You can “build the plane while you’re flying it” so they say!

I know for some of you with a more corporate or educational background, this concept is a tough one. But trust me, wouldn’t you like to find out if there are people out there who want to buy what you want to sell them BEFORE you spend too much time or money creating whatever IT IS?

Yes, you want to know this.

This is Market Research, part of the marketing process.

Where do you start jumpstarting your business in the first place?

You start by either knowing one or more of the following things somewhat clearly (you don’t have to know all of these however right off the bat, nor do you have to be completely clear about them to start marketing):

  • jump-start-your-biz-logoWho do you want to serve? Who do you enjoy working with or who do you think that will be? What type of person, organization or business is it? What do they care about most in regards to what you’re doing? What problems do they need to solve that are in your wheelhouse?
    • If you’re somewhat clear on the WHO then just find out what they want and figure out then what to sell them (to start) and where to find them.
  • What do you want to offer? Do you have specific products or services that you’re wanting to sell and make money on?
    • If you’re somewhat clear on the WHAT then just go into the marketplace and see who’s buying those and that becomes your WHO – start with the most obvious buyers first.
  • How do you want to work? How you want to work should first determine what types of products and services you offer, what business models you implement and possibly even who you target. Depending on how you want to work, there will be very specific marketing strategies you’ll want to do first, plus you may want to delegate some things more too so you can get farther faster.
    • Do you still have a job and can only work an additional 4 hours a week on your business?
    • Do you have two businesses and trying to juggle what to do with each effectively and consistently?
    • Do you want to only work X number of hours a week, month or year?

Starting a Business in Your 60’s and 70’s? Be Inspired By These Women!

I am so inspired by all the women I’ve been meeting and have worked with who are starting their own business in their 60’s and 70’s.

Many of them say “I just can’t sit around, I need to be active”, or “I’ve always wanted to do X and now I finally can”.

For whatever reason they decide to wait to start a business until their later years:

  • For some it’s just something they put off while they take care of everyone else first.
  • For others it’s a life event or transition that gives them the revelation to finally take charge of their life and do what they’ve always dreamed.
  • And for a lot of them they do it out of necessity actually as they realize they may not have enough money to enjoy the rest of their lives the way they would like.

Whatever the reason, these folks are so motivated to do whatever it takes to make it happen fast.

  • They realize they can’t know or do it all and they reach out for support.
  • They dive in with two feet and don’t look back.
  • They take action quickly as they know the clock is ticking!

One thing most of them have in common is that they just have more faith in themselves at this stage. Faith in themselves to do this new venture and faith that it will all work out on the end.

I asked a recent gal, 70 years old, that I sat next to on a plane “Why are you starting a brand new business at age 70?”

She said: “First, I could not stand to sit at home all day long and play solitaire. Second, I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. I grew up with a really bad childhood and my life’s mission is to prevent other children from going through what I have. It’s as though, everything I’ve done in my life was leading up to what I’m doing now. One of my goals was every year to get some kind of an award and recently I was given the honor of speaking at the White House, and for all of the work I’ve done I got the Presidential Point of Light Award. ”

Again, how inspiring right?

Let’s encourage anyone and everyone to go after their dreams at whatever age they may be!

I was at a women’s conference a couple years ago and one of the main things that stuck with me from that particular conference was that we don’t have just ONE purpose in life or in business, but we have three.

It made sense and maybe you’ll agree.

It always felt hard for me to answer that question when my coaches and mentors or even my clients asked me, “What is your purpose?”.

But this makes it simple I think, see what you think and comment below!

You May Have 3 Purposes:

  1. Professional Purpose – this is why you do what you do from an expertise standpoint. What is the transformation you provide? What are the resources or the trainings you provide? And whom or how many is it for?
  2. Global Purpose – this is the bigger purpose that that for the planet and why you’re here on earth. What kind of legacy or impact do you want to make on a global basis?
  3. Personal Purpose – this is YOUR big why and why you do what you do from a personal standpoint. What you really want for yourself and those you love and how will you make an impact this way?
What do you think? Do you have more than one purpose? I do.
  • My Professional Purpose is to help entrepreneurs jumpstart their businesses and themselves by implementing profitable business systems, models, and marketing so they can create a smooth-running, moneymaking business they love.
  • My Global Purpose is to heal the hearts of women on this planet and teach them (men too) that they don’t have to settle for relationships that don’t serve them or jobs they hate. They can take charge of their life and go after anything they want or need.
  • My Personal Purpose is to create a life full of love, health and happiness for myself, my family and those around me.

One of the biggest things I see with entrepreneurs in February is that they typically get into a funk.

They set lofty goals maybe in January that still aren’t really coming to fruition or they’ve already backed out of the resolutions they’ve set and for whatever reason get into a funk about business stuff or personal (which in turn affects their business too).

 

Some of the things that can put us into that funk include:

  • Realizing that what we’re doing to grow our business isn’t working
  • Having negative people around you and saying unsupportive things
  • Not having the funds to invest in or do the things you KNOW you need to do
  • Just plain NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO

I did a little poll on Facebook recently along with asked some friends, peers and clients:

“What do you do when you get in a funk?”

“And what do you do to snap yourself out of it?”

 

Here are 20 ways I found or that came up in that poll that could help you when that FUNK hits you too:

  1. Pray
  2. Say some positive affirmations
  3. Read a chapter in an inspirational book
  4. Get out into nature
  5. Pamper yourself with a massage or pedicure
  6. Call a supportive friend, peer or mentor
  7. Read thank you notes, letters and cards
  8. Review the testimonials of your clients on your website
  9. Watch an inspirational video on YouTube
  10. Shift your plans or appointments for the day and go do something fun or play instead
  11. Get to a networking event to socialize and brainstorm with others
  12. Set a NEW goal and take some action towards it
  13. Get hugs
  14. Exercise
  15. Nurture yourself on the inside
  16. Take a nap
  17. Wallow in it all for a little bit – set a timer for just how long and feel it
  18. Get a caffeine fix
  19. Straighten your office, get organized
  20. Watch a funny movie

It was so fun being on the same stage (technically) with the great Les Brown this week! Technically I stood on the stage when I spoke but he stood in ‘front of’ it. LOL

His mannerisms and the style in which he speaks is so like what I like to do. He’s totally transparent and authentic. In fact, it was hilarious, but he even pulled some waterproof mascara out of this pocket during his talk, and groomed his head and beard with it saying that’s how he gets rid of the “grey”! Only he would do that I think but it just proves that you do have to be yourself and that’s when people will LOVE you the most. Read more about this on my blog and see more pics too!

I got a chance to talk with a lot of other speakers and my peers, it was good to have more time to really get to know those of them who stayed for most of the two day event.

That brings me to the topic of today’s video too – being more authentic in your business, brand, marketing and just in general.

I’m sure you’ve been to events where the speaker breezes in, speaks, sells you into their program, then breezes out without even getting to know you or who’s in the room a little more. And there are plenty other business professionals who show a lack of authenticity, it’s not just speakers.

Now it’s hard when the event is a short lunchtime event, etc. there is only so much time to network and mingle. And granted, sometimes you just have other events you have to get to or of course for Les Brown, he was paid to be there so he wasn’t going to stick around or come early.

But it’s the speakers that could be there, they could connect more with you, they could take the time to get to know the audience by showing up early and leaving late. Maybe it’s just me, but this is what I do and I think those who don’t frankly are selfish and more out for themselves than the greater good. I’d be careful if I were you following people like that.

We’re almost to the half way mark for the year and boy is it flying by!

I wanted to let you in on a little secret that I’m doing right now in my business and it’s about getting back to the basics.

Yes, you heard it here first….the queen of doing all kinds of stuff in her biz is still doing the basics!

Why? Because that what works! (in any economy)

You see, while the leveraged business models are still working, there are some business models that you want to spend your time on and some you ABSOLUTELY DON’T right now….

It’s time to ‘Get Back to the Basics’ of what works in your business, the types of things you’re selling, your marketing, your follow up and your overall effective work habits.

In the last few months every business owner I’ve spoken to has all had the same questions:

“What can I do that will bring me more business, nothing is working?”

“Where should I be focusing in my business, I feel like I’m spinning my wheels?”

“How do I get out of overwhelm? There’s so much to do!”

Well, you’re not alone. However there’s a lot of hypy sales stuff out there that sounds great and sounds like it could help you make millions of dollars but will it really work for YOUR type of business and YOU?

Can you risk it financially right now to ‘try it out’?

Most of you I know cannot; neither do I want to take some of those risks so I’m with you here.

What I’m suggesting is getting back to the basics, getting back to building and cultivating relationships with everyone you know. I know you know this, but I’ll bet you’re NOT REALLY DOING THIS?

No entrepreneur I see is doing enough personal connecting, following up, promotion and marketing and most of this little to no money.

You need the RIGHT PLAN of action to show you which steps to take so you can get moving – you need to do BOTH offline and online marketing activities these days to really get where you need to go. That plan needs to consist of many basics – its the marketing basics that will pull you through this tough time. It’s the marketing basics that I’ve been doing since day one in my business and will continue to do every year….because they work.

Basics of Offline Marketing Could Include:

  • Networking
  • Speaking
  • Drop-bys
  • Direct Mail
  • Phone calls
  • Advertising
  • Referral rewards
  • In store Promotions
  • Publicity
  • Live Events / Tradeshows
Basics of Online Marketing Could Include:
  • Social Media
  • Websites – professionally built and copywritten
  • Opt-in boxes, online offers
  • Shopping Carts, Email Marketing Programs
  • Blogging
  • Video Marketing – youtube
  • Article Marketing
  • Webinars / Teleclasses
  • eBooks and info-products
  • Search engine optimization
  • Web directories
And more on each really….there is so much one small business can do these days but how do you know what to implement FIRST!?
If you implement the above strategies OUT OF ORDER in your business then you may waste a lot of time and money without seeing RESULTS. I want to prevent that from happening to you….
