In today’s world—the world of building businesses online—most entrepreneurs understand that building an email list is extremely important. An email list is one of the best ways to build your business because it gives you the opportunity to connect with potential buyers on a personal, authentic level.
Done right, an email list can supercharge your business results.
But (you knew that was coming, right?) an effective email is only as effective as your open and click-through rates.
If nobody’s opening your emails, and nobody’s clicking on the links you put in them, then your email list is not actually working to build your business.
And that can be discouraging.
It takes lots of time, energy, mental power, and money to build a list and to write content regularly.
So today, I’m going to share six of my favorite tips for writing an effective email that connects and converts.
Tip 1. Make Sure Your Emails Are Mobile-Friendly.
I know. It sounds pretty obvious. Also, emails not being mobile-friendly doesn’t really sound like a deal-breaker, right? Wrong.
Here’s the thing: an increasing number of studies and statistics show that a growing number of people use phones and tablets to shop (not computers). In fact, one of the reports I read said that up to 70% of sales happen on phones or tablets.
If your emails look “off” or load improperly and aren’t easy to read, your readers are going to click “delete,” period.
So here are some mobile-friendly-related considerations to make as you create and compose your emails:
Whether to use a banner. Recently, I’ve noticed that entrepreneurs see better conversion rates when they do not use a banner.
The user experience: technically. People reading on teeny tiny mobile devices are more likely to skim than people who read on computers. Make it easy for people to consume your emails by incorporating white space, shorter paragraphs, and shorter sentences.
The user experience: emotionally. Be sure to think about how your subscribers feel when they get your email. They’re living, breathing, busy people, so give them something worthwhile.
Tip 2. Make Your Emails Easy-to-Read and Understand.
As I mentioned above, your ideal prospects are likely skimming your email. That being said, is it easy for them to follow what you’re saying? Are you using words they quickly and easily understand?
Are you making them think too hard?
Of course, I’m not saying you should “dumb down” your message. But you should also be sure to use language that your ideal prospects use (not jargon from your industry).
On another note, be crystal clear about which action you want your readers to take. Set links apart so readers know exactly where to click. If it’s not crystal clear, your readers likely won’t take action at all.
One of my favorite tips for creating a crystal clear call to action is to start with the end in mind. Before you even start writing the email, be clear in your own mind about which action you want readers to take—whether it’s to enroll in your new course, buy your book, or read your newest blog post.
Building your email that call to action is a great way to make sure you’ve just created an effective email. And don’t forget to keep it simple!
Tip 3. Connect with Your Ideal Prospects.
Your community is unique. It’s important to ensure you are connecting with the members of your community on a personal level.
Here are a couple of examples:
I’m on a list where the business owner writes very long emails a few times each week. To be honest, although I’m seeing better conversion rates with shorter emails, this entrepreneur’s emails are entertaining—a great mix of content and stories from his life.
And, they always include some kind of offer at the end.
I’d typically caution entrepreneurs against sending out too many sales emails, but this particular business owner has it nailed: I am certain he gets a lot of email opens and a lot of click-throughs because his emails are informative and entertaining!
One of my clients has had a great response from shorter, punchier emails that have a kind of “hook.” She’s often directing people to read her blog posts, and she makes her emails short and sweet and to the point. Although this effort is the opposite of the one I explained in the first example, it works!
It’s all about knowing what your ideal prospects want from you.
Tip 4. Make Your Emails Personal.
The reason email works so well is that it is personal by nature. Your communication is like a letter to each of your community members. So when you’re writing an email, pretend you’re writing a letter to one specific person. When you master this, each of your ideal prospects will feel like you’ve written specifically to him or her.
When they get the sense that you’ve taken the time and energy to focus on them and write something that matters to them, they’ll reward you by opening and reading your emails.
Tip 5. Write Great Subject Lines.
Think about it: when you’re looking at that long list of emails in your inbox, you’re filtering: deciding which ones you’ll trash immediately, which ones you’ll read later, and which ones you’ll read right away. How do you make those decisions? You look at the subject lines. So, what makes subject lines great, or effective?
Being specific. If you have a deadline coming up, or a webinar showing on a certain date, include that in your subject line.
Being a little “off-the-wall” or invoking curiosity. Some examples are, “Winter is coming,” or, “It worked … kind of.”
Mixing it up. If, in most cases, you write straightforward subject lines, try throwing in a few “off-the-wall” subject lines every few emails. Or, if you typically write mysterious subject lines, throw in a few straightforward subject lines here and there. This may help you cut through the email clutter.
Tip 6. Write Powerful PS’s.
Did you know that it’s extremely common for a reader to skip from the top of an email straight to the PS? In fact, the PS is known to be the second-most-commonly-read element in an email (behind the subject line). So this is “hot real estate” in your emails! There are several different ways to write a powerful PS — to get you started, I’ve included a few email writing tips below:
Address an objection. The most common objections people have when buying your product or service are time and money. They’re not sure whether they can afford the time or financial investment. So, think about what you can say to overcome those objections.
Share one of your clients’ real-life success stories. Whether you summarize the story in your own words, or insert a quote from one of your clients, this is a powerful way to illustrate that you’re helping people get great results.
Position the reader’s choice about whether to invest with you as a choice to remain in their current situation, or to move forward and get the results you can provide them.
Recap a juicy benefit of the product or service you’re selling. For example, set it up as an “imagine” statement: “Imagine finally knowing exactly what to do when it comes to your marketing, rather than feeling overwhelmed and uncertain of what to do, when.”
In Conclusion …
I think the best part about writing effective emails is that it’s fun! It’s fun to be yourself, share with your community, and build relationships that thrive as your business does.

Becky formally suffered from a Binge disorder but she overcame her obesity and health problems about 9 years ago and has learned to stay healthy. Becky shared that many of her problems stemmed from low self-esteem and shared her unique perspective of having relationships with men while being overweight and unhealthy as well as how she is now, healthier and 130 lbs. slimmer.
We shared about our behavior – HOW we were and WHO we were before when we were in our unhealthy relationships. And a big part of the problem was because we created some of the problems. We found that we were somewhat emasculating. It’s hard to be take charge business owner one moment, then turn that switch off to be the feminine and flirty woman the next moment. I realized that I wasn’t as kind as I should have been with my husband. I started to be introspective and asked myself the questions – “What is wrong with me? What am I doing wrong in my relationships?”
That’s when I really dove into learning as much as I could about myself and relationships by attending relationship courses and workshops and investing in relationship coaching and consulting. It mattered so much to me that I was willing to invest in myself, as well as my business. I was all in to find THE right man to love and appreciate me, to be supportive of what I was doing in my business, to be my cheerleader when I needed one. And I found him!
Becky shared that her relationship problems stemmed from her unhealthy feelings and thoughts about herself. She didn’t love who she was in her previous relationship and she became judgmental towards her spouse. She was projecting her anger and disappointment in herself toward her spouse which wasn’t fair to him.
We both agree that if you are experiencing similar issues in your relationships; if you are struggling in your relationships, you should start investing in yourself to get the tools and resources to learn how to improve your relationships.
As I stated in the video, when I was trying to be more successful in my business, one of my coaches advised me to just be “love”. I was resistant to “being” because I was more interested in “doing”. But I eventually let go of the resistance and at the end of that year, I found that I had made 6-figures in my business. This illustrates the reason why you’ll hear me say in many ways that “Love and Money go hand in hand.”

So What’s in your funnel? What are YOU Selling?
Here are 5 Levels of What (could and should be) in Your Marketing or Product Funnel Plus What IS a Funnel?
1. The “Freebie” – what are you giving away on your website or in person so you can capture people’s contact information so that you can continue to market to them? You’ve GOT to do this one for sure and it doesn’t have to be a FREE consultation! Try to give something away that your target market will definitely want but it doesn’t have to take your time, make it more automated instead.
2. The “Easy Yes Offer” or “Try Me Out” Offer – This is your low-level offering. Can you record a free CD, write an ebook, offer a webinar, prepare an ecourse? These are all lower level products or programs that you can create once then sell over and over again taking no more time (time being the key word on a low-level offering). Easy Yes Offers can also be your time if the goal is to have conversations with prospects in order to have them connect and trust you to enroll in higher end programs. You can give and receive a lot of value in consults where you charge a small introductory fee.
3. The “Do-It-Yourself” – This is the larger, more beefy product offering that people can buy and work through at their own pace. It could be your signature service packaged into a home study kit for example like I plan on doing with my Love and Money Business Summit and that I’ve already done with my JumpStart Your Marketing(TM) System.
4. The “I’m All In” – This is for very interested and committed prospects who want more of YOU. They want to get your advice personally maybe or work with you 1on1, come to an event or even pay you for your high end programs or services. There are fewer people who will commit to these types of offerings however if priced right, you don’t need that many, nor can you usually handle that many.
5. The “Whole Enchilada” – This is for the type of customer who simply LOVES YOU and loves what you do, teach or sell and will buy anything and everything you offer or promote. They are your ‘ideal client’, I’d imagine.

Finally you have to practice, test and practice and test, over and over again and different audiences might require different easy yes offers. You may have to alter them, change them and revise them along the way. You’ll know when you have that easy yes offer, people will be throwing cash or their credit cards in your face or orders will come in like crazy online!

As a business and marketing coach, these are some of the biggest things that I see actually holding my clients back from attracting more clients and making more money in their businesses. Because rarely are you in the mood to do more marketing or follow up if you aren’t that happy or personally supported. It’s just what happens.
I know it seems funny to say that but it’s true. It happened to me too about 5 years into my business…I became stagnant with it. My revenues plateaued and it was because of some of these things come to find out.

Can you believe that on the day Jason and I were so excited for him to finally be done with his radiation and chemo appointments (yesterday)….that immediately following his last treatment, he was in so much pain they rushed him to the ER and found he had blood clots in his lungs! Excuse my language here but What The Frig!
We are so disappointed mind you that this stupid cancer journey is not yet behind us. I know it will never be behind us with all the regular appointments you have to do following and for the rest of your life but geez already, give him a break.
I’m sorry to be such a Debbie Downer today on you but you know what one of the nurses said yesterday….just talking out loud to us in the room….she said “Well everybody gets some kind of cancer these days, it’s just so common”. So be prepared. Don’t focus on it of course but get your business ready, and get prepared “just in case” you can’t work at it daily like you are now. Plan for the “What If” and be grateful when nothing happens.

Don’t get sucked in to someone telling you that you should do it this way or that way and having that be the ONLY way you make money or grow your business. ONE way doesn’t work for the majority trust me.
I wanted to share a few of my “working remotely” resources and tips – this is a picture of me working at one of Jason’s treatments in the cancer center this week. It’s freezing in there, sweats are in order even though its 100 degrees out!
Working Remotely Resources:
Logmein.com – I love this resource because it allows me to access my desktop from anywhere and any computer. I realize many of you work from your laptop and hence when you travel you take your laptop and your whole business and files with you, that’s great. But for those of you who have a desktop computer at your home/office (I have a big giant Mac), you can’t take that with you when you travel OR in case you have to go back and forth to the hospital or somewhere else and work on a daily basis, it’s nice to be able to access your files from anywhere. I bring my laptop along but then I don’t have to double up all my files or move too much over to my laptop and it stays pretty secure without my entire business on it. It’s like $79/year I believe so not that expensive.
Also as a division of Logmein. they offer a screen share software called join.me. I use this now for my webinars, like the one I’m doing tomorrow. It’s not a “perfect” system for doing webinars but I don’t do that many at this time so it’s good enough. Plus I can use it with clients to show them how to do stuff on social media or their websites, etc. It’s $19/mo.
Carbonite.com – This is the remote data backup system that I use on my desktop to protect my files. I highly recommend you get an online backup system because let’s face it, you won’t manually back up your files as much as you hope to so it’s better to be protected. And for like $59/year it’s a super good deal. It runs while I’m sleeping too so no down time. Here’s the site to go check it out.
Filezilla.com – This is an FTP free software that I use to upload files to my website so that I can just use a link for someone to be able to access them. If you want to have someone be able to download or view a PDF or listen to an MP3 file for example as a freebie you may have offered or as part of a paid product or program, you will most likely want to upload that file to your website so it can be linked. The days of attaching files to an email are long gone, especially if that file is many Megabites large which MP3 files are.
WordPress.org – The .org is different than the .com apparently, I learned this from my website techy team. The .org templates allow you a lot more flexibility, functionality and user friendly layouts with opt in capabilities and so much more. Don’t get sucked in to the free templates, invest in your website, it’s actually YOUR MOST IMPORTANT MARKETING TOOL besides yourself! What I love about my wordpress websites is that I can login from anywhere and update a page or add a post, it’s amazing.
Did you know that I have an entire Website and Techy Services Department in my Company that you can utilize? It’s for that jumpstart you need with your own site or the new site you need but aren’t sure who to have build it for you. We’re the best team on the internet because you get me – sales and marketing strategist and big picture website planning PLUS my extremely knowledgable website and techy specialists. We typically only handle clients sites or ezines, social media work, etc. that we’re already working with but ask me more about it if you’re in the market right now, we might be a very good fit for you!

P.P.S. – Because the truth is that most of you need to be doing almost everything I share with you in my videos and newsletters yet you’re ignoring me, hiding your head in the sand, or you just don’t open the emails because you don’t want to know. And frankly this is what’s hurting your business.
Instead I would rather see you stop working so hard at things that are not working and instead learn what you need to do to jumpstart your business in 90 days and over the next yearso that you don’t have to work so hard, you can systematize things you’re doing and even delegate things that you don’t like to do or don’t know how to do but still need to be doing so that more things get done, more prospects get reached, more sales get made and more money goes in your pocket.

I’ve been throwing a lot of strategies at you lately on how to do certain types of marketing, marketing, marketing so I thought I’d change it up a bit this week. Just in the last couple weeks I’ve been talking to dozens of women who are not happy in their personal lives, their love life or have some beliefs about themselves they know need to change in order to be totally happy and confident.
One thing I don’t necessarily teach on is how to change your limiting beliefs….there’s a lot to that subject and many ways to alter or squash your limiting beliefs. I can recognize them in almost any client of course as they are probably the thing that’s stopping you from…
Getting your marketing done
Doing more on social media
Writing more content
Recording more (or any) videos
Doing your follow up calls
Redesigning your website and brand
Getting a new headshot
Raising your rates
And so many other things that would help you jumpstart your business!

Then, where I can help you is in your personal life…in addition to advising you what to do and how to do it in your business and marketing, I work with many clients with creating a happier environment for themselves so you CAN do all the above mentioned action items with more confidence and ease (revenue producing activities mind you that you want to be doing).
Clarity and Confidence are two very critical components to having a successful and profitable business.
Some things that hold us back from being 100% at both of these is “other people”. It could be a close friend, family member or loved one who doesn’t “get” what you do or you’re trying to do with your own business.
They don’t “get that you have such passion for something that you’re willing to not take in a paycheck for a while, while you build the business of your dreams”.
They may not “get why” you want to invest in yourself, training, a mentor, books, CDs, workshops and a new website and they may say things that sound hurtful to you yet they believe they’re “helping”.
They say or do things that squash your own belief in yourself, make you doubt yourself or worse yet, forbid you to move forward in some way.
This is why I have most of my clients “evaluate” their own relationships when I find a little lack of confidence or clarity or lack of drive too. Often times we find one or two people who “just don’t get them” who are influencing them in some negative way for the entrepreneur, yet they think they’re doing it because they love you.
So one thing I’m REALLY GOOD AT is helping you communicate your needs, visions, passions and purpose with your loved ones (or significant other if it’s them) so they start to really “get you” more and what you need from them (if anything), to help you communicate better with them and manage your energy when around them.
I know this first hand because my ex-husband didn’t “get me” when I first started up my business either. We were married when I started it after quitting my last job outright and telling him I was just going to start my own business. He was fearful that I wouldn’t bring in a steady paycheck anymore and was always saying things to me, little digs, that hurt very much and didn’t encourage me at all. In fact, I would go out networking during the day with a big smile on my face saying everything was ok and then I cried myself to sleep many nights because I felt like I wasn’t loved and supportive.
I ended up divorcing him after two years of trying to make him understand how I’d changed and what I really wanted to do and be now but he didn’t have any interest in knowing what it was that I did or in understanding me at that point at all.
I just don’t want anyone I know or any of you who are reading this to be in this or a similar situation at all. It hurts not to be supported for what you really want to do or be. I wasn’t willing to settle any longer being with a man who made me feel that way and I hope you aren’t either.
I also had a father who I rarely saw mind you, but when I did he would find something wrong with me. He would tell me first how proud he was of me doing my own business and making a decent living at it (since I never asked him for money he assumed I was doing ok, although he did always ask) but then he would find something like my weight or my crooked teeth to comment on and asked “why haven’t you fixed that yet?”.
I’m getting a little vulnerable with you here because apparently there are hundreds of you if not thousands of you out there hiding with these types of people in your life. And you’re trying to build a successful business around something you’re very passionate about yet you can’t understand why it’s really not taking off yet or why you’re not as successful as you wish you were or why you keep working so hard at it and you’re going no where fast.
It very well could be because of something going on with you personally. You may not even see it just yet but it could be there.
