“The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”

How many times have we heard that? In school, in business, at home when we hear ourselves saying it to our children or ourselves? Reminding ourselves that we shouldn’t leave things undone. Get busy. Get in motion. Get something done, don’t just talk about it. So then, what it should really say is, “The Road to Hell is paved with procrastination.”

The Road to Success is paved with good intentions! Especially when it comes to referral marketing.

If building referral marketing success is a process of developing and using business contacts as a way to build business, then the road to Success should be paved with good intentions. Or more specifically; good intent. Having good intentions is the base gravel for the road and dictates the strength of the foundation on which the referral marketing traffic is going to travel.

What is your true intent in regards to your referral marketing activities? Are you engaged in a process of motivating your referral partners by truly helping them, or are you just doing the minimum to maintain the relationship?

People will eventually see through a facade. Are you practicing open, honest communication with those in your referral network? Having a foundation of good intentions is essential in traveling a smooth road to referral marketing success.

Honest, good intent will help you avoid common referral marketing mistakes.

Good intent will keep you from pouncing on potential new referrals, pushing them away or forcing a referral that isn’t quite ready yet. Try to make sure the true intent was not just to make yourself look good in your referral network.

Passing a referral at your meeting might feel good, but it does not help the person being referred and can in fact damage the very relationship you’re trying to build.

This one should be easy, but is often overlooked, especially by those new to the referral marketing process: Good intent should keep you from meeting with people in your referral network for a one-to-one and then trying to sell them your goods or services.

The one-to-one meeting is about building a relationship and if you are immediately trying to sell to people in your referral network, it will quickly be public knowledge that your intent is really just to sell.

Where the rubber meets the road. Sometimes looking in the mirror can be tough, but try doing a thorough examination. Be careful not to misdiagnose your intent.

Are you really involving yourself to help others as a means of growing your own business? Notice the “help others” comes first in that statement. Selfless giving is not always hereditary, it can be developed, and it really is essential to building good will with people you are trying to do business with by referral.

Finally, old adages don’t die easily. The road to hell is paved with procrastination. New habits take exercise and the more you exercise good intentions the more success you should see, just ahead.

Networking is probably the single most critical thing that I’ve ever learned to do well that has impacted my business the most with more clients, more opportunities, more exposure and more fun.

The more people you know, the more referrals and repeat business you will get. The number of people you have in your database is the number of people you have access to market to on a regular basis so your #1 goal in your business should be to build your database and set up a consistent, frequent system for marketing and following up with them.

networkingIf this isn’t your #1 goal, you’re missing out on a ton of sales. If you’re not networking (online and in person in some way), you’re missing out on a ton of sales.
What are you doing to network and meet new people every single month?

Where is your target market ‘hanging out’? Are they stay-at-home moms, who spend a large majority of their time doing things with their children’s school events or sports? Do those places have meetings? Are they homeowners who might attend home shows or community meetings? Are they all realtors? Are you attending their monthly association meetings?

I go where my target market is and I do it often, both locally and nationally. I apply to be a speaker at events and conferences too for more added credibility and opportunity during the event. You can find out about any group and what is available online.

Now, when I’m networking, I remember to ask important questions; asking questions is a HUGE, but important step! Whenever you are nervous or not sure what to say to break the ice, ask a question. When they answer the question, follow it up with another question, and so on and so on ….until you know their whole life story.

This builds trust with the person you are speaking to, when they walk away they think you are the greatest, they like you, they want to do business with you, and they want other people to know you too (e.g., a good referral source). It really does work.

Whatever you do, you don’t want to monopolize the conversation about you, what you do or how great your products or services are; you want to make it about them. In fact the only time I talk about myself is when they ask me questions, which doesn’t always happen by the way.

I want to do business with people that genuinely want to know how I am doing, how my business is doing, or how my dog or kids are doing. I network to build long lasting relationships with people like me who I respect and admire.

Let us try to be better networkers, listeners and truehearted professionals. If we do, the world just might be a better place and we will all gain more business in the end.

Do you get tripped up when trying to share what you do?

Many entrepreneurs get confused about how to best answer that question.

how to share what you DoFirst of all, you should make sure you are using the words; the language that makes a difference with your referrals sources and prospective clients.  It’s more than just giving someone your title such as “I’m a business coach”.   I introduced myself in this video as “the JumpStart Your Biz Coach”.  That’s pretty descriptive, right?  People understand that I help entrepreneurs JumpStart their businesses.  I will follow that up with “I help entrepreneurs make more money in their businesses doing what they love so they don’t have to work so hard!”   That’s takes only seconds to say.  I’m using the language that my clients use – my clients want to make more money!

I don’t agree with being too vague when talking to people – it won’t make enough of an impact to help them remember you.  But don’t get on a roll giving people too much of a description of what you do either. You’ll likely lose them while they are trying to follow your description.

We’re almost to the half way mark for the year and boy is it flying by!

I wanted to let you in on a little secret that I’m doing right now in my business and it’s about getting back to the basics.

Yes, you heard it here first….the queen of doing all kinds of stuff in her biz is still doing the basics!

Why? Because that what works! (in any economy)

You see, while the leveraged business models are still working, there are some business models that you want to spend your time on and some you ABSOLUTELY DON’T right now….

It’s time to ‘Get Back to the Basics’ of what works in your business, the types of things you’re selling, your marketing, your follow up and your overall effective work habits.

In the last few months every business owner I’ve spoken to has all had the same questions:

“What can I do that will bring me more business, nothing is working?”

“Where should I be focusing in my business, I feel like I’m spinning my wheels?”

“How do I get out of overwhelm? There’s so much to do!”

Well, you’re not alone. However there’s a lot of hypy sales stuff out there that sounds great and sounds like it could help you make millions of dollars but will it really work for YOUR type of business and YOU?

And more on each really….there is so much one small business can do these days but how do you know what to implement FIRST!?

Have you noticed how some small businesses say they get a ton of referrals or they work by referral only?

Ever wonder why the referrals aren’t pouring in from your happy clients and customers like that too?

After all, you are the best-kept secret in your industry right? Well, let’s not stay that way at least…let’s get you in front of more prospects and referral sources every month.

3 things I’ve seen, one or more of which that could be the reason that you’re not receiving more referrals in your small business are:


  1. You’re not ASKING for them. You do need to actively ask your current clients and vendors or people who love you and your work even to give you referrals. They could just be too busy to think about giving them freely but would if you just stopped to ask.
  2. You’re not making it very EASY for them to give you a referral. You’d think that they would just call you, email you or connect you in some way with people they know could use your products or services if in fact they loved working with you. BUT that doesn’t happen usually because they may not know what to say or HOW to best introduce you. Make it easy for them to refer you by writing something they can forward in an email or something they can read on a voice mail to someone. Try giving them a printed handout, flyer or letter that they can give out on your behalf. I even go to the extent of creating special web pages on my website just for referrals from specific people.
  3. You don’t have enough referral source prospects. Make a list. Think about all the types of businesses, professionals, industries and associations in addition to individuals you know that would be a good fit to refer business to you. Those can be people or companies you already know or ones you don’t know. For the ones you don’t know you want to build a marketing campaign to reach out to them, build a relationship with them to see how you can support each other. This list then becomes your referral source prospect list for direct mail, phone calls, social media connecting and in some cases emailing.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas to go get more referrals this week.

Remember though, referral source marketing is one of the three types of marketing. Generally you need to do marketing activities within each category to maximize your potential: Referral Source Marketing, New Business Marketing and Database Marketing.
