My name is Katrina Sawa and I’ve been in sales and marketing positions for almost 30 years of my life. During those various positions, from corporate to small biz to door-to-door sales I had to learn all kinds of sales and marketing techniques in order to either build my list of contacts that I could market to after or make sales right there on the spot!

I see business owners making mistakes every month at events with their exhibitor displays and booths so I put together a checklist of items to bring for those types of events so you’re fully prepared.

Quick Tradeshow Marketing Checklist of Items to Bring for Conferences, Displays and Even Speaking Gigs:

1.    Plenty of business cards, brochures, sales flyers, tip sheets, order forms, etc.

2.    Plastic (or other) holders for biz cards, brochures, flyers, signs to display on the table upright

3.    Promotional giveaways or items and a basket to display them in possibly

4.    Your products, CDs, books and whatever hardcopy items you have for sale

5.    Fish bowl or basket of some sort to collect cards in for a drawing at your booth

6.    Possibly a signup sheet for email list (make sure to collect full contact info, not just name and email though!) or making appointments on the spot

7.    Drawing slips for those without business cards to fill out and enter your drawing with

8.    Some kind of free drawing prize – could be physical gift although you have to get it to the winner, if a big event you may want to offer a digitally delivered or downloadable gift/service.

9.    Risers for your table display to make some things sit higher up on your table, cover w/ colored napkin or material to match

10.    Extra tablecloths, colored napkins and or tooling to match theme or brand

11.    Banner or large sign for behind the table, hanging from draped poles or floor sign for side

12.    Balloons or flowers matching colors to theme or brand

13.    Office supplies: regular pens & large fat pens, extra paper for handwritten signs, regular tape and packing/duck tape, tablecloth clips/holders, paperclips, safety pins, velcro stickers, metal banner hooks, clipboard (s), dice for game, rubber bands, stapler, scissors, post it notes, rope, sharpies to write on super gloss biz cards, name badge holders or nametags

14.    Basket of candy or some edible goodie either with business card attached or not to attract people to your booth.

15.    Portfolio or brag book of your work (if applicable) to show

16.    Laptop, mouse, power cords and flash drives or CDs to showcase video of product/service/event/testimonials in case of no Internet coverage

17.    Radio or music of some sort to attract attention and make your booth more lively.

18.    Sheets or handouts with your bio on it, speaker topics possibly, testimonials, etc. to get to know you better.

19.    Handouts with your list of services and fees or just include on an all encompassing order form

20.    New client packets or whatever someone would need if they engaged in your products/services today – bags for product purchases, folders, bonus gifts, flash drives?

21.    Ice chest with waters, snacks to hide under the table if you can’t get away

22.    Comfortable shoes or couple change of shoes depending on how long you’re there

23.    Phone chargers for charging your phone since you’ll be taking lots of pictures and posting on social media while you’re there, cameras, batteries

24.    FOR SPEAKERS ADD: PowerPoint presentation, printed introduction sheet, projector, clicker

Are you frustrated with your email newsletter open rates?

I have. In fact I almost did it this week!

Email is supposed to be the most effective way to share with your subscribers, customers and prospects BUT everyone is on too many lists these days, including you probably, and we barely see probably 20% of what comes in.

It’s true, email is very effective for those who read them BUT it’s very ineffective for those who aren’t even seeing all the great stuff you have to offer and that’s a shame.

So, what do you do as a passionate business owner trying to inspire thousands of people with your gifts and talents?

You see, it’s critical these days that you do more than email or social media to market to clients and prospects.

Many business owners though try not to spend money to attain new leads so this is all they do. But you’re still not seeing big monetary results.

There are a lot of things you can do that are free or very low cost to market your business but you just may not know what those are.

 

Email marketing however cannot be the only thing you do to keep in touch with your list, clients or prospects.

You’ve got to find a way to get more contact information for your prospects, like phone number and mailing address.

In this digital age you want to stand out and be different and really the best way to do that is to just pick up the phone and send a few mailings. Seriously, what has worked for hundreds of years for business-building still works and actually it works better than email.

Now, I mentioned social media here too, and social media can be done if you’re doing the right things online; otherwise you could just be wasting time posting without a clear strategy.

So basically, you need to do all of this plus much more, and on a regular basis too, if you want to see clear, consistent cash flow and customers.

What to do about your email marketing?

Well, here are a few tips to help increase your email open rate as best you can:

1.    Brainstorm on some really enticing and attention getting subject lines – this is a big part of why people aren’t opening.
2.    Deliver really good content – articles, tips, videos, audios and more.
3.    Get personal with your list – the more they know about you, the more likely they’ll want to see what’s up with you each time you email.
4.    And of course, make sure you have permission to email them in the first place – don’t be a spammer. (If you aren’t sure of the laws, educate yourself!)

Keep in touch with your prospects, clients and your entire database regularly in many different ways for best success.

Reach out for training if you aren’t sure what to do or if you’re afraid you just don’t know enough about marketing. Marketing and sales are the two single most important things to keep sharpening your saw about in order to really grow your business.

It’s time to evolve your marketing plan and strategy, especially if you haven’t updated it in a while or if you have no real strategy at all.

Being an entrepreneur in this day and age there is NO getting around being online, being visible, credible, knowledgable and informative. Let’s face it, if you’re not already embracing most social media platforms for whatever reason, it’s time to start paying attention and get interactive online. But it’s more than just “being” on social media, there is a lot more to pay attention to and this can help.

I recently returned from a pretty big social media and digital marketing conference and there were a few key things that I gleaned from this event that I’m going to implement more or pay attention to when updating my marketing strategy (right now, not later, but now) and I thought you may want to know what these updated trends are as well. And the reason I’ve dated them here is because this stuff changes fast so make sure YOU are getting updates like this from your own team or mentors regularly (or connect with me and get mine).

7 Updated Online Marketing Trends – July 2014

  1. Facebook business pages no longer have good reach, they are now set up for more of a pay-to-reach type of opportunity. It used to be, as recent as October 2013, that your posts would get a reach of 10-12% of your total fans. Now, in April of 2014, only 6 months later, Facebook has changed our pages and we’re only seeing an average of 1-2% reach. Why is that? Facebook obviously wanted us to enjoy having this opportunity to reach our fans and followers but now they want to get paid for that. You can’t blame them but WE, the entrepreneur, have to evolve where we’re focusing our efforts in order to continue reaching enough prospects, new leads and customers online. Remember, you want to use Facebook as just a marketing tool, posting and commenting isn’t always what works on these platforms, it’s the actual one-to-one connecting that works, make sure you have a strategy for doing that effectively on social sites to enough people each month.
  2. Almost 5 billion pieces of content are shared daily on Facebook and 500 million tweets are shared each day on Twitter. How interactive are YOU on these sites and others?
  3. 84% of people you’re marketing to trust recommendations from people they know which means you want to build a loyal following with people who will share and refer you. You may also consider that any paid advertising you do could work less due to this fact as well. What are YOU doing to educate and keep in touch with your database each month?
  4. 100 hours of videos are uploaded to YouTube every minute. How much of that is video you produced and are sharing? This is probably one of THE most CRITICAL marketing strategies you want to figure out how to add effectively to your plan this year.
  5. Podcasts are becoming so popular that some of the new car makers are installing podcast players and stations into car radios along side the AM/FM stations. 39 million Americans have listened to a podcast in the last month.

    Mobile viewers make up more than 40% of all YouTube global watch-time, more than 1 billion videos are uploaded per day. Is YOUR site mobile friendly where someone doesn’t actually have to move the site around to see what’s on it, really mobile friendly not just visible via mobile? There’s a difference. And are you on YouTube with videos and podcasts where your prospects can listen and watch you on the go?

  7. Buyers are 70% of the way to a buying decision BEFORE they agree to talk with you which means you must have a very impressive, credible, functional and action-oriented website and overall online presence. Do you?

Most of all however, for all types of marketing, the goal should be to get them into your mailing and email database so that you can continue to market to them. You’ve got to build relationships with them over time; that’s the most effective way to market to anyone. People will do business with people they like, trust and connect with so make it easy for them to do business with you and refer their friends to you too!

Today I’m talking about something that’s pretty urgent, in fact my team just became aware of this last night and I wanted to pass on what we know to YOU so YOU can make the necessary adjustments to your marketing IMMEDIATELY. Do NOT pass this info up, watch and read so you can fix your emails and systems right away and not get caught spamming.

If you are sending emails to ANY list of people at all, even if they have clearly “opted in” on your website prior to July 1st, if you have ANYONE on your list or plan to possibly have people join from Canada, you must implement a double opt in approach on your sign up pages! Apparently this applies only to those from Canada right now but if you are only collecting names and emails or just email addresses, you may have no idea where your subscribers are so I would NOT assume they couldn’t be from Canada

I know I have a lot of subscribers from Canada….so watch out in the next week or so for more correspondence from me that YOU may have to take action on in order to continue receiving emails from me! You may also want to watch what I send out and do along with a few of the other online marketers too that you may follow so you can get a better feel on what YOU should do. But don’t not do anything…it’s an unfortunate change we have to make but necessary and timely.

In today’s video, I share some hot tips about social media as well as a couple of tips that you don’t want to be doing on Facebook.
Here’s a quick summary of the tips – watch the video for full info:
  1. Be careful using Facebook for your client / private groups (have a backup).
  2. Sending messages to say “please go like my page…” – this one is a pet peeve of mine, your messages asking to like your page is not an effective use of your time.
  3. Take the online relationship offline and connect.
  4. Make sure your contact info is complete!

It’s becoming very common, I see, for entrepreneurs, especially women entrepreneurs, to focus solely on their business and/or their career, yet forget one of the most important things they really should focus on. You need to focus on yourself, ladies. It’s time to stop just doing things for everyone else, and it’s time to start focusing on yourself. 

I promise you that when you do this, you will attract more clients. You will make more money. And you will become more successful. However, I also guarantee that if you do not place a certain level of importance on yourself”?your health, your well-being, your love life, your environment, your support system, your time with your family, and your time for self care”?if you don’t focus on these things more, you won’t make the kind of money you really want to make in your business.

It’s just not possible. Instead of focusing on everyone else and everything else to ‘busy up’ your day, thinking that’s what you need to do in order to build your business, have a great life, and make more money, you need to fit in some self-help. Self-help can include many different things to many different women. Here are a few things that my clients, as well as myself, are trying to implement more of in our day-to-day lives so that we can be the most successful businesswomen possible.

  1. Exercise and nutrition. It’s important to eat right and put the right things in your body, to get moving so you’re not stagnant, and to take the time for this. It’s not that difficult to make sure you have healthy chicken, seafood, or vegetables in your refrigerator that you can access every day. If you work from home it’s much easier to eat healthier. If you’re on the go, you need to prep food so you can take it with you, possibly in a container or ice chest. You also need to drink lots of water. You have to pay attention to these things or before you know it you’ll be 50 pounds overweight and unhappy with your body, and that all directly reflects how much money you’re going to make, I promise you.
  2. Time alone / Self-care. So many of us wish we could get a massage, stop to read a book for an hour a day, do our meditation or yoga, take a walk, go for a swim, get to the gym, play with the kids. Whatever your self-care requirements and desires are, why aren’t you making time for them? It can be done in as little as one to two hours a day. Maybe you block out time in the early morning hours, and you block out time before bed to unwind. This is vital to your success because it will feed your soul; therefore, your attraction factor will increase tremendously for clients who see that you are the ideal person to work with or buy from.
  3. Learning and self-development. This is one of the biggest things I think we all do in certain respects. You may listen to a speaker at a luncheon or a teleclass on the phone once or twice a month. Maybe you do read a book pretty often. However, how much are you really investing to implement the things you’re learning, the “aha’s” you’re having? Are you putting those ideas and thoughts into action in your life? Or, are they just motivating you for minutes and then leaving your mind?

These three are areas that I see 90% of my female clients and women entrepreneurs avoiding or ignoring in their day to day. I hate to see that because these are the areas that could ultimately double the revenues in your business if you paid more attention to them. It’s not always about doing more marketing, promotion, or sales. Sometimes it’s about being the best person you can be and being kind to yourself along the way.
