Goal Setting – it’s something I always spend time doing as we approach the end of each year.  It’s how I can get all the things done I want to do in my life and my business each year!

  • Big goals?
  • Small goals?
  • Mediocre goals?

Yep, I find that people don’t always have goals; at least not clearly defined money and lifestyle goals.  If you do, you are one step ahead.

And if you just picked one of those above but you really don’t have any yet… that’s ok, read closely though.

I want to encourage you to THINK BIGGER!

Set higher goals for yourself, your revenues and for what you REALLY want in your life as a whole.

I see way too many people settle and life is just too short to do that.

YOU DESERVE IT and so do those you serve!

Remember, when you think and play a bigger game, your clients will look up to you more, you will have more influence and be considered more of a leader in your industry.

Stop Talking about Your Goals Like They’re Dreams…Get ‘Em Done Instead

You’ve probably heard of S.M.A.R.T goals before…and that’s because it’s a formula that works. Here’s an overview:

SPECIFIC – Your goal needs to be spelled out very precisely and you also need to have a reason WHY behind your goal…some benefit or emotional attachment that will keep you focused. For example, a goal might be to earn $12,500 per month and onboard 5 new quality clients monthly in the next 90 days.

Using language that leaves no doubt as to what the goal is, why you want to achieve the goal, and how you will get there is very important. If you are not able to be detailed in your description of the goal, it will be hard to meet it. Take the time to do this part right.

MEASURABLE – This is where the Journal comes into play. It’s a report card and a method to measure what you want to accomplish and what you actually accomplished. If your goal cannot be quantified, then it’s not a full goal and you won’t know how when you have succeeded. An example of a measurable goal would be “I want to deposit to our bank account an additional 100 dollars per week. I’ll accomplish this by writing five 500-word articles each week for a life coach.”

ACTIONABLE / ACHIEVABLE – There are different things that “A” can stand for, but it’s usually actionable or achievable. In order to achieve anything, you must take action. So, make your goal actionable, where you do something each day that will eventually result in an accomplished goal.

Goals should also be achievable or you will quickly get frustrated. Be accurate about the time it takes to reach a goal, and what actions it takes to get there. Also, know who will be responsible for doing it.

REALISTIC / RELEVANT – “R” can stand for realistic or relevant, and both are important. If you want your goal to succeed, it should most certainly be realistic or you will fail. If you’re currently making $500 a week and your goal is to increase that to $12,500 in 90 days, that’s not realistic. However, you may be able to increase it by $300. Once you achieve that goal and are earning $800 a week, you can set a new goal to increase your income by another $500 a week or something similar.

Your goal should also be relevant to your life’s vision and match your values. There’s no point in making or achieving goals that have no relevance to your long-term life goals. You could instead use that time to reach goals that get you one step closer to actually reaching your life goals. So always ask yourself, if the goal is relevant to your life goals.

TIME BOUND / TIMELY / TRACKABLE – Various authors refer to the “T” in the S.M.A.R.T. acronym as time-bound, timely or trackable. All of these t’s are important parts of the goal creating and setting process. If you don’t set a time limit and you can’t track what is happening, your goal will be hard to quantified or show as achieved.

Are you ready to have your best year ever? I hope so!

I know one thing I want to do more of is to put ME and my family first when it comes to my planning, my business and my calendar, how about you?

My husband Jason and I just returned from a really relaxing 9 day vacation in Mexico and we couldn’t have taken that if we hadn’t planned far in advance. You see, we have his ex-wife to deal with on trading days for custody and you can imagine a longer term getaway, either with Riley or without, takes a bit of negotiation in this situation. Plus we have to coordinate dog sitters, all the travel itself, pre-pay, manage my clients, my team and more. And to boot, we decide to sell our house and buy a new house in the process… a last minute decision at Thanksgiving but we found a great new, bigger home and it motivated us to get our current house ready to sell too.

Many people with lots on their plate, even just this amount of things, may not take the time or effort to invest into planning a vacation but we did. We know that getting away alone really rejuvenates us as a couple, as business professionals and just renews our energy and spirit.

So the biggest thing we do to put US first is to make sure we plan ahead to take vacations each year. Typically we do one with Riley (our now 8 year old, soon to be 9) and one without. The second thing is I try to cut down on evening functions that I attend so we can have dinner together and family time for the short amount of time we have together each day.

It’s probably time you put YOU FIRST more often as well I would imagine…right? 

When’s the last time you truly made decisions based on putting yourself first?

Do you like making resolutions every year? What about money goals – do you make them? Hit them?

I personally am not a big fan of resolutions. Every time in the past where I’ve set them, I’ve never seemed to actually accomplish them, especially when they had to do with dieting or weight loss. I do however, see results from and accomplish most of my goals that I set every year (personal or business).

So instead of resolutions if you’ve not had that much luck with them in the past either, let’s set some clear, actionable and realistic goals (especially MONEY GOALS!) for yourself and your business?

 

I believe in optimistic, stretch goals but also realistic goals. I’ve had a few mentors in the past suggest I set these huge lofty revenue goals for my business, I’m talking a million dollars or more, when I wasn’t even yet making one hundred thousand. Now that’s ridiculous in my mind. It’s not that a million dollar business isn’t doable but when you aren’t even to the first biggest milestone yet of $100,000, it’s so far from realistic that of course 99.9% of people would fail.

One thing you can do to help you figure out just how much money you could potentially make or bring in this coming year is to crunch the numbers. This is one of the FIRST THINGS I do with a new coaching client. We figure out what they want to or are selling and for how much, then we forecast so-to-speak how many of each they can potentially sell, etc. to see what “number” could be at the end of the year IF they do all the right marketing, sales conversations and other things that will be necessary for them to get there. (That stuff is the hard part.)

What I mean by crunching the numbers is that you start out by identifying all the different things you sell and for how much. For example, do you sell a $47 ebook, a 6 week group program for $297 and one-on-one coaching for $400/month, a $497 live event? That’s just an example of a coaching business with a few various options of products and services.

Another example is say of a professional organizer or other service professional who sells monthly services on retainer say for $200/month for 1-3 hours or a VIP Day or weekend for say $2000. Or percentage of book of business, whatever it is that you sell, you should be able to somewhat plot out what you could make.

Take a look at realistically how many of each of these you could sell each month based on what you sell now plus what you could sell if you marketed yourself a whole lot more and much more consistently. Could you double the number of sales every month? Plus could you raise your rates on what you’re already doing? Many business owners could. If so, add all those sales up, raise your rates, crunch the numbers and see what you get?

There’s a little more to this of course because you could be adding a new service or product this year and you aren’t sure how it will sell yet. You could be writing a book and expect to receive a lot more opportunities to get in front of audiences while speaking about it which you know will lead to sales. There are so many opportunities for increased revenues that could be right in front of your face but because you’re so close to your business it’s just hard to see.

When it comes to setting your BIG Money Goals for the year, here are 9 questions to ask yourself first:

  1. Crunch the numbers – what can you sell and how many each month?
  2. What else will you be adding to your product line / sales funnel to factor in for revenue?
  3. Where will you have some huge opportunities for huge exposure to factor in for lead generation?
  4. What did you do last year in revenue and was that working at 100% capacity?
  5. Is there room for growth and much more marketing to bring in massive amounts of more leads (if you knew how and what exactly to do?)?
  6. Could you revise some of your offerings so you are bringing in revenue in multiple ways?
  7. Can you stretch a little farther than your original goals to get yourself a little outside your comfort zone?
  8. Can you raise your rates or stop offering discounts and offer bonuses instead to keep more of the revenue?
  9. Are your goals realistic yet stretched and optimistic?

Finally, one of the things I always like to remind my clients when they get a little depressed about not reaching ALL their goals all the time…. You want to celebrate your accomplishments always. Every milestone you reach or goal you achieve is cause for celebration and reward. Make sure you keep track of what you DO accomplish, you’ll be surprised!

simplifyThis year I plan on doing the opposite of what a lot of business owners are doing. I plan on simplifying in my business.

You see, a couple years ago I was trying to grow my business and a mentor told me to create this new product and this new program and this new service. And after a year or so of doing all of that and pretty much launching something new every other month or so, what do you think happened?

You’d think I would have made oodles and oodles more money, but sadly, that did not happen. The revenue came in small chunks and because I had so many different ways to buy or different ways to learn (i.e.: products, programs, services) my customers and prospects were confused and never knew which thing to sign up for so attendance in many of these new programs were not as high as I’d hoped.

Then what do you suppose happened? Yep, I got tired. Tired of working so hard to sell the next big thing. Tired of constantly trying to reinvent a new thing that I thought people would want to buy.

When times were tough and the market was down more, it seemed like this was the right thing to do; keep trying to find the thing that people would buy. But it wasn’t.

The best thing I could have done, which I’m doing this year, is to simplify what I offer. This way, it’s super clear on what someone needs, how to buy it or sign up for it and I don’t have to kill myself in the process.

You see, what matters most to your prospects and customers is not that you have huge amounts of things to offer them but you have the “right” thing that they “need and want”. That’s what is going to make them want to buy from you.

Here are a few tips on how to simplify in YOUR business:

  1. First off, figure out what your ideal clients and customers really want. Learn what matters most to them about what you offer rather than what you think they need or should buy. They will only invest in what they see they need and want, not necessarily what you think they need.
  2. Next, determine all the different ways you could offer those things to them. Could you develop a live workshop or virtual group training rather than deliver the information one-on-one? Could you design or develop a product, program or something that they could buy without any involvement of you at all after it’s completed? Figure out how your ideal client or customer wants the information, training or how they need your product delivered and make sure you offer it to them in their preferred manner, not necessarily the way you want to deliver it. I talk to prospects a lot initially about their learning styles and suggest products and services that I have to them based on how they want to learn or digest the information.
  3. Choose price points that are realistically in the range your ideal clients and customers would typically invest in with a little bit of stretching beyond that if you want so you have room to negotiate or offer special deals. Just make sure you also take a look at your overall product/program mix so that you do have some lower level offerings as well as some higher level offerings. If you desire to make a certain level in revenue this year then you want to make sure you have enough opportunity to sell enough things so crunch the numbers on what you’re selling verses how many you potentially think you could sell to make sure you can hit your goals.
  4. Finally, you won’t make anywhere near the amount of sales that you want if you don’t do enough marketing. Marketing is a huge term, it encompasses so many things and not all marketing strategies are good for all types of business owners so you do have to be careful which you embrace and implement. You want to give each strategy a fair trial period before you decide it doesn’t work but first you need to start out with a very smart, effective and consistent marketing plan. Your marketing however could be simplified as well. There are so many ways to automate, systematize and delegate your lead generation, marketing and follow up tasks; this is something to really focus on if you want better results but you want to stop working so hard.

One of the biggest things I see with entrepreneurs in February is that they typically get into a funk.

They set lofty goals maybe in January that still aren’t really coming to fruition or they’ve already backed out of the resolutions they’ve set and for whatever reason get into a funk about business stuff or personal (which in turn affects their business too).

 

Some of the things that can put us into that funk include:

  • Realizing that what we’re doing to grow our business isn’t working
  • Having negative people around you and saying unsupportive things
  • Not having the funds to invest in or do the things you KNOW you need to do
  • Just plain NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO

I did a little poll on Facebook recently along with asked some friends, peers and clients:

“What do you do when you get in a funk?”

“And what do you do to snap yourself out of it?”

 

Here are 20 ways I found or that came up in that poll that could help you when that FUNK hits you too:

  1. Pray
  2. Say some positive affirmations
  3. Read a chapter in an inspirational book
  4. Get out into nature
  5. Pamper yourself with a massage or pedicure
  6. Call a supportive friend, peer or mentor
  7. Read thank you notes, letters and cards
