Staying in the conversation around being a successful entrepreneur that is!

I LOVE what I do and I LOVE supporting and training entrepreneurs like you, new or seasoned on what you can do to jumpstart your business, marketing, websites, mindset, sales, team and even how to generate more clients through speaking, writing books, hosting events, retreats, online memberships and so much more. 

I’ve been doing this for 17 years now and I can’t even imagine doing anything else. You see, I’ve worked really hard building my own business over this time and I still continue to invest in trainings and workshops and masterminds all the time. I know how important it is to keep “honing my skills” – especially with regard to marketing and sales!

I always say you need to “stay in the conversation” to keep up with what’s going on in the marketplace… regardless of what you’re selling or what industry you’re in. 

I remember selling door-to-door when I worked for the local newspaper. I’d go around to businesses every day trying to sell them ad space in the paper (yes, it was a popular and good thing to do back then). Some would slam the doors in my face, some would welcome me in and listen and others would say “I tried that and it didn’t work”. I could always teach someone something though about marketing and advertising if they would just listen to what I had to say… many times sharing OTHER ways they could attract new customers, even if they didn’t run an ad with me.

Either way, I was top in sales because IT WAS ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS and I knew it way back 20 years ago.

Before I worked for the newspaper, I had a few other Marketing Consultant or Marketing Director jobs and I also did even harder door-to-door sales… residential!! OMG that is tough let me tell you! I was selling coupon books for local auto service shops or restaurants and I’d only make $10/sale back then… my goal was to knock on 100 doors to get to my goal of 10 sales!! Can you believe it? $100 bucks per day is all I strived for back then…

I’ve had BIG MINDSET SHIFTS since then about what I am worth, what I want, etc. But it was the best thing I did frankly because I can take a NO like nobody’s business!! (A very good characteristic to have when you’re offering and selling YOURSELF.)

You know what though, that’s where I really learned to be more diligent with my day-to-day revenue generating activities! I had to be. I had to be assertive, productive, motivated, period; otherwise I couldn’t pay my bills or eat!

I find that this is THE ONE SKILL or learned behavior I guess it is, that I’d say 95% of entrepreneurs don’t have (but you can learn). They don’t take CONSISTENT DAILY ACTION TOWARDS MAKING SALES. 

Either it’s due to lack of confidence, knowledge, know-how, courage, time or frankly just motivation… some are just too “comfortable” to “get to work” like you need to in order to really grow your business.

There is no magic pill to make you an overnight success, it takes work… BUT it doesn’t have to be “hard work”!

When you LEARN WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT and then you can even delegate some of it or systematize some of it, it is a lot easier on you (the business owner), and THAT’s what I LOVE to teach you how to do!!

What does JUMPSTART mean to you?

It just came to my attention from the last email I sent out to my subscribers about my Jumpstart Your Biz in a Weekend event (I got dozens and dozens of people replying) that many have the thinking that: “I don’t need a jumpstart” because…

  • I’ve been in business for 5, 10 or more years and things are going good
  • I’m too busy, I don’t need clients right now
  • I’m slowing down and trying to stop working so hard I certainly don’t want to get a jumpstart
  • I need to scale my biz, not give it a jumpstart
  • I need an exit strategy, not give it a jumpstart

Well… great!! Those situations in fact ARE also things that I believe you still need a “jumpstart” with. At least that’s how I look at it, let me explain.

I have a LOT of clients who are in these situations, I don’t work with just new business owners you know…

I work with seasoned business owners too. For the newer businesses, getting a jumpstart makes sense to a lot of you, for obvious reasons I think.

However, for my seasoned clients we do things like: 

  • Develop more systems (online and off) to help you manage your business easier and work less in it but ON it
  • Create systems for more nurturing of your database for more referrals, automation, reminders or upsells so sales are made while you sleep!
  • Changing your offerings, raising rates or adding other income streams that are more leveraged perhaps so you don’t have to work so many hours to make the money you’re making – changing it up, doing things differently takes planning, strategy, support and even bigger ideas than some people may generate on their own.
  • Adding team members so you can do less yourself and have more free time for vacations, family or just plain working less with less possibility of potential burnout. Plus, having more team allows you to expand, grow, exit, franchise, hire a manager to run things, be a better CEO.
  • Upleveling or evolving your brand – creating a new website and direction with new inspiration due to change or something that recently happened in your life OR that you WANT to happen but there’s no room for it to the way you’re going. I worked with a fitness trainer once who was holding classes at a gym and also doing mobile training 1on1 and when we changed her business model to doing virtual fitness training and having an online membership and community she could actually stop working so much, she met a man and had two kids!
  • Upleveling yourself as an expert with a book, speaking, more worldwide exposure, hosting a podcast, developing a movement, hosting live events and your exit strategy even. These are things we often want once we’ve got a good book of business already but there’s no time to even think about implementing all of this when you’re IN the business day after day.

Being busy IN the business isn’t good if something does end up happening that could take you out of the day to day sales and client interaction, right?

What would happen if you or someone you loved got sick, hurt or worse right now? 

Would income still be coming into your business regularly even if you didn’t have to concentrate on it?

The “what if” Factor is real. Do you have a plan in case something happens? This is what a lot of seasoned biz owners are NOT prepared for – how to make their business run and make money if THEY did not have to be there every day.

  • What if you had to go take care of a loved one for a month?
  • What if you had to have a surgery and were out for 3 weeks on pain killers?
  • What if your kid/husband/mom/fill in the blank couldn’t work or got hurt/sick and it was just YOU to take care of them?

None of us are getting younger, more stuff happens to us and the ones we love as we get older no matter how hard we work at preventing it.

So much stuff has happened to me and those I love since I started my business – what makes you think nothing like this will ever happen to you?

  • I’ve been through a divorce and also another really horrible breakup with a boyfriend, that made it hard to concentrate on work throughout the whole process (for 4 months!).
  • My dad died and as an only child had to fly to his home multiple times, deal with all his “stuff” and settle his estate over the course of 12 months and $23,000, taking care of everything through probate.
  • I’ve had two total hip replacement surgeries – all in ONE year, out for 3-6 weeks each time, thinking I could work from the couch but not realizing what recovery really took out of me, wasn’t able to.
  • I’ve had a toe surgery another year, a really bad sprained ankle another year and now have knee issues (Oh and speaking is my main biz strategy, right? Hard to do on crutches or brace.).
  • My current husband went through cancer the year he proposed. We had to postpone our wedding a year and I had to spend half my days all week long for over 8 weeks in the chemo center cutting my work time in half if not less as I was a full-time caregiver. (Thank God he’s healthy now!)
  • My mom fell 3 times in one year and I had to fly to her a couple times for surgeries, and to get her set up with in home health care.

I’m sure there was more than that but those are the biggies… beyond that I’ve had multiple website changes and team changes that have cost me tens of thousands of dollars and months of delay in my marketing.

You seriously can’t wait to get more SYSTEMS set up in your business. 

Stop thinking that you’ll focus on this “later” because you’re “too busy or too ___” now.

This is just something to chew on and maybe a “reality check” for some of you too. 😉

I don’t want to see ANYTHING bad happen to you or anyone you love but IF IT DOES I want you to be ready for it. I also want to see you making a LOT more money doing what you love!!

THIS IS WHAT HAVING A JUMPSTART MEANS TO ME.

This is not a squirrel or a bright shiny object. Instead it’s what most people I see need, including myself all the time! A jumpstart somewhere…

Whether you are a NEW business or a SEASONED business, you need to be SMART about your business.

Weekly Marketing Checklist

Want to know the things I do regularly to grow and expand my business? Entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart. If your goal is to reach the masses with your message and/or make a minimum of $3000/mo, I would say, in this day and age, you’ll want to be doing MOST of these things regularly as well!

Get in front of more people, more often and in more ways is the #1 goal…ways you can do that include the following:

  • in person networking
  • in person speaking
  • in person vendor/exhibiting
  • host a FB live/YouTube Live yourself
  • host a FB live w/ a guest
  • be a guest on podcasts, radio shows all over
  • Call into group zoom networking events and network in chat, especially those events that allow commercials with who is on live
  • ask others who do FB lives to bring you on as guest
  • offer to collaborate with peers on joint FB lives
  • nurture and interact with your community, your groups, and clients, etc. often so they will spread the word about you
  • host live events
  • participate and network, share tips and advice inside FB or LI groups – then take conversations off to a private message and then a phone call
  • go after publicity in your local marketplace, get on local TV, radio and in print media. It’s not as hard as you think
  • get published with your articles, blog posts and video tips on other people’s blogs, websites and directories. There are often submission guidelines on their sites or just reach out and ask!
  • pay attention to online summits and giveaways and be a part whenever possible in those types of events
  • travel to larger conferences and targeted events throughout the country and possibly be a vendor there if you aren’t chosen to speak
  • get listed in online directories and maximize your profiles everywhere such as social media, your professional membership websites and wherever your target market looks – sometimes there is an opportunity to be a partner of a website such as a catering association needs website designers, but normally web designers don’t join catering assoc. they can sometimes be a partner member which means you have access to that entire membership directory

Other ways to engage your Database/Community:

  • send an update letter in the mail
  • send an update email
  • call through your database a couple times a year
  • send twice monthly newsletters or emails of some sort (min 2x/mo or more)
  • share more stories with them to get them to connect with you more
  • friend or connect with each customer or person in your email database over on social media as well – sending a private message to them over there
  • sending more private messages and/or segmented messages to specific groups within your database so it speaks more directly to them and their needs. (example, someone who signs up for your Grief ebook, may be different than someone who signs up for Purpose workshop)
  • actively ask for referrals
  • ask them to take surveys, give their input
  • offer free coaching calls every once in a while
  • send holiday cards anytime of the year – more direct mail regardless
  • send a print newsletter in the mail
  • send a private video message just to them, one by one, there’s a system for that
  • start a text message campaign, get them to give approval to add them to it and then start sending texts to certain clients and people who want info that way
  • host free group calls on conf line or zoom to give them support and do Q&A
  • host free webinars and calls bringing in other experts to share

What Does a Vending Machine Have to Do with Your Marketing Message?

 

Are you able to change up your message like you can click a button on a vending machine and get a different snack?

 
I used this analogy today with a client. She felt confused and unclear about her message, what she was saying to people she met out at networking events and the overall message too about what she speaks about (she’s a speaker).
 
I personally, change up my message all the time, depending on who I’m speaking to, whether it’s one person or a group, whether it’s a 30 second commercial or a speaking gig.
 
The message I may have speaking to a group of mom entrepreneurs will definitely be different than the message I would have with a group of authors or writers as would it also be different with a group of professionals that have a JOB who are looking to start their own business.
 
All three different groups of people (or individuals with the same scenario frankly) will have different interests, problems, questions and solutions that they are looking for and it might actually be more like a dozen or more different types of groups or people/industries of business owners that I speak to on any given month. I don’t niche the “type” of client that I work with, I niche the “scenario” they are in with their business.
 
I’ll bet you run into the same thing, right? Not that you don’t want to niche what you do but you can serve more than one type of customer I’m sure.
 
Think about your messages then being like snacks that you’d get from a vending machine. When in front of one group, you press the button for Doritos and the Doritos fall out, when in front of a different group, you want the Oreos so you click for Oreos.
 
If you aren’t there yet, with the ability to be able to alter or tweak your “message” on a dime/whim then you will be. It’s something to start keeping on top of mind to practice because it’s helpful to be able to pull out one “script” so to speak for one situation and a different script for another situation.
 
It’s important to be able to switch your message to speak directly to the hot buttons of that specific person or group.
 
As someone who’s been in business for almost 17 years now, I’m really good at knowing EXACTLY what to say and when to say it to whom. I punch those darn vending machines buttons all day every day spitting out different “scripts” or messages/information to different people all the time and I’m pretty comfortable doing it. It wasn’t always this easy though. It took a lot of time and practice and tweaking my message frankly.
 
It also took patience and understanding of MYSELF that it was ok to do this. Sometimes people pressure you into having just ONE message and I say no. The more you can “segment” your messages to certain groups, the more response and engagement you’ll have.
 
Be open to the evolution of you, your business, your message, your offerings, your target audience, your vision, your goals and just be open. You’re on a journey and it will never be perfect and you will never be done. Just accept that and keep moving! You’ve got this!!

Together we can accomplish it all, alone you will see challenges and perhaps not know how to overcome them. It’s time to step into your bigger, badder self and take charge of your business, your life, your income and your legacy. Let’s do this together, shall we?

Why Should You Become An Author?  I’ll tell you why…

How many times have you thought about being an author?  Sometimes when people have overcome a challenge or have realized success with something they’ve done or accomplished, they think to themselves or even say it out loud…”I should write a book!”

Why? Because they have a message, knowledge or information that they think would be helpful to others.

I’m certain that many of you have had those thoughts too, but have you really considered doing it – becoming an author?

There are many reasons people write a book these days, but for business owners and entrepreneurs, the BIG reason to become an author of a published book is to get VISIBILITY and EXPOSURE. This was me about 9 years ago…

I was all “DOING”. That’s all I focused on in my life, my business, etc., it was whatever I could DO to get to the next level, be happy, to get clients, get myself out there more…. DOING, DOING, DOING….  what could I DO to get to the 6-figure mark in my business was my biggest goal in 2008 and it had been for a couple years but I was stuck, I couldn’t get beyond the plateau I was at financially. It was driving me crazy and it was very frustrating too because I was literally DOING everything everyone told me to do to market myself, follow up; more than probably many of you are doing now even.

It wasn’t until I hired this one business, money, mindset coach… I had hired him because he was emphatically confident that he could help me make more money, he could help me reach to and exceed the 6-figure mark. Ok, so I invested $25,000 that year with him and his mastermind and I went to every call, live event, and meeting; I was “all in”.

Funny thing though is that what we worked on all that year was not the marketing, sales or business tactics that I thought we would. Instead, it was the mindset, limiting beliefs, confidence, blocks, fears and frustrations that came up that all of us had to tackle, including me.

I went to my meetings hopeful and was left distraught, angry, defeated.  I didn’t understand what my coach and everyone in the group was trying to tell me back then. When I asked “what do I need to DO to get more clients and build my business to 6-figures”? They would simply answer, “Just BE Katrina”, “Just BE LOVE”.

“WHAT?????” I would remark back with utter frustration and disbelief, crying at the thought that I still had no idea HOW I would get there, what I needed to DO.

Being a good student, I did “try” to go to events and “just BE”. I tried to wrap my “doing brain” around what that meant and what I needed to DO to just BE (LOL). Somehow, some way, I started making strides towards this and I almost didn’t recognize it when things shifted for me. It basically happened on a subconscious level, I would go to conferences and other meetings or events that year or even get on calls with prospects and I would prepare myself right before with the words such as: “Ok Katrina, just BE who these people need you to be, be open, be willing to speak to them, be willing to share, be love energy” and then I would walk in. I wouldn’t use my normal “marketing talk or commercial”, I would ask more questions and just listen. WHOA! What a difference it started to make!

When I did this, the perfect prospects started coming up to me and sitting next to me at lunch. They would remark how easy it was to talk with me and how I made them feel safe and heard. I even had some sign up for my high-end programs at other people’s live events – to the tune of $40,000 for one client! I was shocked this was working and frankly looking back on it now, I didn’t know at the time that it was working. It wasn’t until the year ended and I went to go pull my sales revenue for the year and I had hit $110,000!!

Not only that but I had found a new love interest too after being divorced and single again for 3 years. I had found LOVE & MONEY at the end of that torturous year I call it. This was the key to my success!

Now, keeping this up over the years was a practice of course as you can imagine. It can be easy to revert back to the DOING from the BEING, especially if you’re in fight or flight mode with too many bills, or difficult situations. It was a constant struggle and still to this day I often have to give myself that “PEP TALK” before walking into an event or a phone call. But it is easier and I’ve been able to maintain and grow my revenues every year since then.

This year is where the concepts of my book, Love Yourself Successful, and my events with the Love & Money  theme came from. THIS stuff is the key to many of my clients’ success stories because I saw in them, what I was doing and now knew how to help them make the shift or get more balance between the DOING and the BEING.

There is no magic pill or ONE thing that you can do to jump from $30K per year to a $Million, I don’t care who tells you there is, there isn’t. It takes determination, work (not necessarily hard work by the way, just work), practice, flexibility, willingness to learn, ability to ask for help, confidence, belief in yourself and accountability to yourself and others.

This is why I do what I do. This is why I hold amazing, transformational and informative live events, online trainings, coaching and why I share so much on social media, record video tips, write articles in my newsletter and on my blog…. It’s to educate, motivate and inspire more people who need this message, more people who want to make a bigger impact but aren’t sure how to do that, more people who want to make a great living doing what they love but aren’t sure how. I teach massive amounts of the DOING along with a side of BEING.

How would you like to continuously attract clients and build a business that makes more money – one that really excites you?

One of my favorite guest speaker interviews was with Adam Hommey, host of Business Creators Radio Show.  Adam’s audience consists of business owners and entrepreneurs who want to hear about tools, techniques and strategies to help them build their businesses.

The top and frequently asked questions from business owners revolve around time and money issues.  Time and Money issues are where many of them get stuck.

Attracting more clients and making more money are issues that all small business owners face no matter what is going on in the economy.  There are several things that can get in the way of many business owners doing just those two things.  They include things like:

  • Bright Shiny Objects that will distract you;
  • Implementing the wrong tasks or actions and implementing them the wrong way;
  • Trying to do everything yourself.

When I’m working with a client, I will discuss with them all of the things they need to do or start doing to transform their business, take it to the next level, etc.  And because we are all so crazy busy, I usually hear objections about having enough time.  For those clients with time issues,  I start them out with “clearing space”.   That means the client is to review everything they are doing and decide if it’s something that’s still important for them to do, what they can delegate it, what they can automate and systemitize, and so on.   It’s really about clearing things off of your plate to see where you can get back a couple of hours every day.

This clearing space process works well.  After working on clearing space for one year, one of my clients’ reclaimed 8 hours per week back in her life because we automated, systemitized and delegated many of the things in her business that she had formerly spent time on.

Most people want to get more time to do more marketing for their business or to get their life back, spend more time on self-care or with their families.

One way business owner can get more time is to learn how to say “No” to some things so they can say “Yes” to other things that are a better fit.

I have my clients create vision boards to stay focused on the BIG Picture; what’s really important to them so they don’t lose their focus and get bogged down in the minutia of day to day tasks.

Another great way to find more time is to learn to calendar your life. Now I realize many people don’t like that kind of structure but I challenge them to calendar everything for one month. This helps you learn how to block your time.
