Many times public speakers are asked to not sell from the stage. Even soft sells are prohibited. Often times, professional speakers will accept these terms, especially if the audience is his or her target client.

Should you decide to speak knowing you can’t sell from the stage, here are seven ways to maximize your time and gain marketing opportunities.

1. Encourage photo opportunities before and after you speak and ask the individuals to tag you. If you have a hashtag, make sure they use it when tagging you. This is great for social media marketing.

2. During your presentation, ask the attendees to tweet and post something you have said: a fact or important point. Repeat the hashtag. (Note: I’ve seen great professional speakers go over board on this and I lose a little respect each time they do it. Limit it to only a couple of times during your presentation.)

3. Request that you get a copy of the video or audio recording. You can always use this in your marketing or create a sizzle/demo reel.

4. Ask the event planner to connect you with key individuals who are a good fit for your services.

5. Ask the organizer if you can set up a table at the back of the room. If he says yes, have your lead generation process in place. If it’s not allowed, ask if you can place materials on the seats.

6. Get a testimonial from the event planner and/or the organization’s president/CEO. Liberally use in all of your marketing and on your speaker sheet and website.

7. If someone asks about your services, have your appointment book ready to go to offer that free consultation. Better yet, create an order form with that free consultation and keep it with you at all times!

These are just a few tips in getting the best out of no selling from the stage.

Speaker Media Kit vs a Speaker Sheet

There is a big difference between speaker sheets and speaker media kits. While both contain valuable information about the public speaker, they vastly differ in purpose.

A Speaker Sheet or Speaker One Sheet delivers information about a person’s speaking abilities and the value delivered to the audience in an effort to get booked for speaking engagements.

Meeting planners and event organizers use them to determine who will speak at their events. Speaker bureaus and agencies use speaker sheets to promote clients.

The amount of information on a speaker sheet varies from speaker to speaker. Here are the essential components:

  • Biography
  • Topic Titles and Description
  • Testimonials
  • Contact Information
  • Headshot

A digital speaker sheet file (such as a PDF) is absolutely necessary. It can be sent through email or uploaded onto a website for immediate download. A printed speaker sheet is very useful and is typically one or two pages. There are pros and cons to both formats.

A Speaker Media Kit or Speaker Press Kit delivers information about a person’s message or story in an effort to get publicity via TV, radio, newspaper, magazines, etc.

Media outlets, news desk managers, journalists, and publicists look for interesting stories to feature all of the time.

Unlike the speaker sheet, the information is geared to gaining publicity and have these components:

  • Introduction
  • Biography
  • Contact Information
  • Books/Articles Published
  • Suggested Questions for Interviewing
  • Past Publicity
  • Pictures
  • Speaker Sheet

A digital speaker media kit is a must have, especially if video and audio are available. It can be several pages saved as a PDF file and sent through email or uploaded onto a website for immediate download. For media campaigns, a media kit can be printed and presented as a collated stack of papers, a large three-panel brochure, or tiered multiple pages arranged in a custom-made folder.

To summarize: a Speaker Sheet is perfect for getting speaking engagements while a Speaker Media Kit is ideal for gaining publicity. Having a digital file is a necessity. For best results, professional printing should be considered.

There was a time when a public speaker would be hired to speak to an audience. Speakers like Anthony Robbins, Barbara Corcoran and Les Brown could make thousands off of a single appearance on stage. In recent years, this has changed. Trust me these speakers are still getting paid a handsome fee, but it’s the new generation of public speakers that aren’t seeing these grand offers.

There is a significant difference between the highly paid speakers and the new generation. The new generation of speakers is made up of people like you and me: business strategists, life coaches, insurance agents, health advisors, and social media experts.

Why? Because these speakers have fospeaker microphone and moneyund great benefit in public speaking – they can grow their business and share their message to more people at one time. Think about it: a 30-minute presentation to 20 people in one room beats cold calling 20 people in one day.

That’s why I say “YES” to “no fee” engagements. I’m a branding strategist and I have tailored my presentation to provide information and be a resource to the audience. I know that speaking will benefit my success in some way. To get the most out of my speaking I ask of the event host or meeting planner if they can fulfill these requests:

  • provide me with back of the room (BOR) presence to sell products and generate leads
  • purchase my products or books in advance and gift them to the audience
  • introduce me to other organizations that would have my as a speaker
  • introduce me to key people that could use my services
  • provide an attendee list with contact information for my use
  • hold a drawing to give away a product/service
  • get a copy of any video or photographs taken of me at the event for my use

Create your own list of requests to leverage your time at the event, not just on stage. There are other strategies to help you get compensated for your expertise and time.
