What Does a Vending Machine Have to Do with Your Marketing Message?

 

Are you able to change up your message like you can click a button on a vending machine and get a different snack?

 
I used this analogy today with a client. She felt confused and unclear about her message, what she was saying to people she met out at networking events and the overall message too about what she speaks about (she’s a speaker).
 
I personally, change up my message all the time, depending on who I’m speaking to, whether it’s one person or a group, whether it’s a 30 second commercial or a speaking gig.
 
The message I may have speaking to a group of mom entrepreneurs will definitely be different than the message I would have with a group of authors or writers as would it also be different with a group of professionals that have a JOB who are looking to start their own business.
 
All three different groups of people (or individuals with the same scenario frankly) will have different interests, problems, questions and solutions that they are looking for and it might actually be more like a dozen or more different types of groups or people/industries of business owners that I speak to on any given month. I don’t niche the “type” of client that I work with, I niche the “scenario” they are in with their business.
 
I’ll bet you run into the same thing, right? Not that you don’t want to niche what you do but you can serve more than one type of customer I’m sure.
 
Think about your messages then being like snacks that you’d get from a vending machine. When in front of one group, you press the button for Doritos and the Doritos fall out, when in front of a different group, you want the Oreos so you click for Oreos.
 
If you aren’t there yet, with the ability to be able to alter or tweak your “message” on a dime/whim then you will be. It’s something to start keeping on top of mind to practice because it’s helpful to be able to pull out one “script” so to speak for one situation and a different script for another situation.
 
It’s important to be able to switch your message to speak directly to the hot buttons of that specific person or group.
 
As someone who’s been in business for almost 17 years now, I’m really good at knowing EXACTLY what to say and when to say it to whom. I punch those darn vending machines buttons all day every day spitting out different “scripts” or messages/information to different people all the time and I’m pretty comfortable doing it. It wasn’t always this easy though. It took a lot of time and practice and tweaking my message frankly.
 
It also took patience and understanding of MYSELF that it was ok to do this. Sometimes people pressure you into having just ONE message and I say no. The more you can “segment” your messages to certain groups, the more response and engagement you’ll have.
 
Be open to the evolution of you, your business, your message, your offerings, your target audience, your vision, your goals and just be open. You’re on a journey and it will never be perfect and you will never be done. Just accept that and keep moving! You’ve got this!!

Why Should You Become An Author?  I’ll tell you why…

How many times have you thought about being an author?  Sometimes when people have overcome a challenge or have realized success with something they’ve done or accomplished, they think to themselves or even say it out loud…”I should write a book!”

Why? Because they have a message, knowledge or information that they think would be helpful to others.

How will YOU get more clients this year?

I’ve been busy working with my clients, giving them guidance on their plans for 2019. Many of them are ready and have decided what they are going to launch this year; what they are going to sell, what events they will host, and what topics they will speak about. AND, we’ve been working on the marketing piece and what type of marketing they will focus on.

After my own observations and after talking to others that I mastermind with, it has become clear to me that mass marketing is not working like it used to for most of us. We have to do more guerilla marketing, more relationship marketing…we have to go old school.

And I’m thankful for that because I come from the offline marketing world such as advertising, direct mail, radio, print and newsletter.  That’s what I was doing when I started 17 years ago. And during the course of my business, I’ve learned a lot of the online marketing.

What I’ve noticed is that there are shifts every year. There are shifts in the market, new technologies and things that make it more automated. Yes, I’m all for that, but…

I will caution you to be careful who you are listening to and who you are comparing yourself too. For example, if you are still small with 3k email subscribers or less and you are following someone who has 50k email subscribers, you are not comparing apples to apples. You have to do things differently if you are an entrepreneur who is still small and in the growing stage.

This was me about 9 years ago…

I was all “DOING”. That’s all I focused on in my life, my business, etc., it was whatever I could DO to get to the next level, be happy, to get clients, get myself out there more…. DOING, DOING, DOING….  what could I DO to get to the 6-figure mark in my business was my biggest goal in 2008 and it had been for a couple years but I was stuck, I couldn’t get beyond the plateau I was at financially. It was driving me crazy and it was very frustrating too because I was literally DOING everything everyone told me to do to market myself, follow up; more than probably many of you are doing now even.

It wasn’t until I hired this one business, money, mindset coach… I had hired him because he was emphatically confident that he could help me make more money, he could help me reach to and exceed the 6-figure mark. Ok, so I invested $25,000 that year with him and his mastermind and I went to every call, live event, and meeting; I was “all in”.

Funny thing though is that what we worked on all that year was not the marketing, sales or business tactics that I thought we would. Instead, it was the mindset, limiting beliefs, confidence, blocks, fears and frustrations that came up that all of us had to tackle, including me.

I went to my meetings hopeful and was left distraught, angry, defeated.  I didn’t understand what my coach and everyone in the group was trying to tell me back then. When I asked “what do I need to DO to get more clients and build my business to 6-figures”? They would simply answer, “Just BE Katrina”, “Just BE LOVE”.

“WHAT?????” I would remark back with utter frustration and disbelief, crying at the thought that I still had no idea HOW I would get there, what I needed to DO.

Being a good student, I did “try” to go to events and “just BE”. I tried to wrap my “doing brain” around what that meant and what I needed to DO to just BE (LOL). Somehow, some way, I started making strides towards this and I almost didn’t recognize it when things shifted for me. It basically happened on a subconscious level, I would go to conferences and other meetings or events that year or even get on calls with prospects and I would prepare myself right before with the words such as: “Ok Katrina, just BE who these people need you to be, be open, be willing to speak to them, be willing to share, be love energy” and then I would walk in. I wouldn’t use my normal “marketing talk or commercial”, I would ask more questions and just listen. WHOA! What a difference it started to make!

When I did this, the perfect prospects started coming up to me and sitting next to me at lunch. They would remark how easy it was to talk with me and how I made them feel safe and heard. I even had some sign up for my high-end programs at other people’s live events – to the tune of $40,000 for one client! I was shocked this was working and frankly looking back on it now, I didn’t know at the time that it was working. It wasn’t until the year ended and I went to go pull my sales revenue for the year and I had hit $110,000!!

Not only that but I had found a new love interest too after being divorced and single again for 3 years. I had found LOVE & MONEY at the end of that torturous year I call it. This was the key to my success!

Now, keeping this up over the years was a practice of course as you can imagine. It can be easy to revert back to the DOING from the BEING, especially if you’re in fight or flight mode with too many bills, or difficult situations. It was a constant struggle and still to this day I often have to give myself that “PEP TALK” before walking into an event or a phone call. But it is easier and I’ve been able to maintain and grow my revenues every year since then.

This year is where the concepts of my book, Love Yourself Successful, and my events with the Love & Money  theme came from. THIS stuff is the key to many of my clients’ success stories because I saw in them, what I was doing and now knew how to help them make the shift or get more balance between the DOING and the BEING.

I love helping entrepreneurs through all of this and so much more.

There is no magic pill or ONE thing that you can do to jump from $30K per year to a $Million, I don’t care who tells you there is, there isn’t. It takes determination, work (not necessarily hard work by the way, just work), practice, flexibility, willingness to learn, ability to ask for help, confidence, belief in yourself and accountability to yourself and others.

This is why I do what I do. This is why I hold amazing, transformational and informative live events, online trainings, coaching and why I share so much on social media, record video tips, write articles in my newsletter and on my blog…. It’s to educate, motivate and inspire more people who need this message, more people who want to make a bigger impact but aren’t sure how to do that, more people who want to make a great living doing what they love but aren’t sure how. I teach massive amounts of the DOING along with a side of BEING.

Why should you do more video in your business?

 Well… here’s a few reasons:

  1.  It’s basically a free marketing strategy. Yes, you could pay a videographer or video editor to produce or complete your videos but you sure don’t have to in most cases.
  2. YouTube is one of the largest search engines on the Internet now and you need to be there.
  3. It’s faster to explain something complicated or complex on your website or with customers.
  4. It’s easier and faster to get to the point of your message so you can keep the attention of your visitors, followers, subscribers or customers.
  5. Oh and…. 85% of the US internet audience watches videos online.

I find that more people will watch and respond to my videos on Facebook for example than read or respond to most of my business-oriented posts.

What kinds of videos can you do?

Here’s a list of what I do and/or am planning to do more of:

  • Tips regarding something in your business for social media posts, YouTube, your blog and emails
  • Sales pitches for landing pages, sales pages, emails and more
  • Tutorial videos to explain something more in depth on your website or wherever
  • Curriculum videos for a paid program
  • Facebook live videos – these would be different than the tips or other videos above that you might also post on Facebook or related sites. These will get the most views since they lie right on Facebook:
    • Now you have Live video available on YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram too
  • Speaker videos – record everything you do, virtual or in person
    • Videos of you speaking on stage at any event
    • Speaker Sizzle Reel
    • Speaker Introduction Video
    • Speaker Media Reel
  • Testimonial videos – of you giving kudos to someone else or a program, etc. or of your customers giving testimonials for you

Now, I know what you’re saying… That’s great and all, Katrina, but I just don’t know how to get started or what to do. I’m not that techy and I really don’t know what to say.

3 Steps to Using Video Marketing to Grow Your Business:

  1.  Just press record – you have to just start by trying it out. Open the webcam on your computer for starters and just press record and start messing around with your intro and a few key points you might want to make. Then you can graduate to recording something more specific and/or doing Facebook Live videos. The key is to just get started.
  2. Repurpose your videos everywhere – this means make sure you make the most of all the content you record. You can transcribe your videos for a written blog post, email, ebook or article. You can post your videos on YouTube, your website, your blog, link inside an email, post to your social sites and more.
  3. Monetize your videos – this is when you start getting serious about making sure that your videos drive traffic to your website, blog, landing pages, free gift opt in pages, sales pages, calls with you and even click to buy links directly from the video itself. There is a whole lot to know on how to maximize your videos including using keyword research, positioning, script writing, SEO and more.

I hope you still aren’t planning on waiting to do more video if you’re already recording them now or waiting to just get started. I’d hate to see you get left in the Internet Dust by your competitors!

As a business owner, one of the most important things you can do to stay top of mind with your contacts, potential clients, and referral sources is to develop simple follow up systems. You are wasting the time you spent gathering new leads plus valuable marketing dollars if you don’t follow up with these people.

I used to do a lot of networking at chamber events, women’s organizations and biz expos and I generally collected about 50 business cards from new contacts on a good week. Now however, that I’m more focused on the online part of my business and working globally with clients, I do more nationwide networking and online social networking.

However, I do the same things as before in the follow up. It’s important for you to realize whether you’re a brick and mortar business, service based business, home-based business or online business, you still need a clear, easy to implement follow up system that includes MORE than just email marketing….let me show you how to make this easy so it will get done.

Here’s my 6 Step Ultimate Marketing Follow Up System:

Implement this in your business TODAY, see more sales TOMORROW!

1. DATABASE ORGANIZATION: Organizing your new contacts is one of the most important tasks to do. You don’t have to invest a lot in a database. In fact you can start with an excel spreadsheet, entering your contacts and business card information week by week.

2. DEVELOP MESSAGES & MATERIALS: Writing your follow up marketing pieces is one of the most difficult parts of this whole equation for most small business owners. Your mailings, emails and even phone scripts need to be written with the hot buttons of your target market in mind. What do they care about most in regards to your products or services?

3. DEVELOP YOUR SYSTEM: Your system includes the frequency and number of times you will touch them. A touch can be either a direct mail piece of some kind, an email note or email newsletter, a follow up call, a message or friend request on social media, a drop by or even a fax. You want to determine what and how many times you’ll do each follow up activity for everyone you meet.

4. DELEGATE, AUTOMATE & MANAGE: Take the 20-28 touch system you created and delegate as much of it as humanly possible to an in office assistant, another employee (if they have time) or a Virtual Assistant or marketing person so you know it will get done. Some follow up can be automated if you have computer software, shopping carts or online services and scheduling software.

5. TRACK, ANALYZE & REVISE: Most often small businesses will do marketing such as the strategies I’m suggesting here in your follow up system yet they will never track to see if what they’re doing is working. Therefore they continue doing the same things over and over again. Sometimes your results won’t become apparent until after you’ve done the thing a few times (ie: frequency is important).

6. CONTINUE BUILDING YOUR LIST & REPEAT: Once you have a system set up for managing massive amounts of new contacts, then you can turn on the marketing hose I call it. That means you can market like crazy. Your goal should be to get in front of a LOT more of your ideal prospects every month in many different ways. I suggest going for a goal of 1000 new people to meet or connect with every month.

These tips are for any type of business, retail, online, service or product. So, not only do you need to follow up after new people you meet to GET their business or referrals and build those relationships, but you also have to cultivate those relationships over time so they keep you on top of their minds in case something comes up where they need your products or services or someone they know does.

If you’ve ever entered an online contest, offered your email address to an online or local store, or given the okay for a sales consultant to send you information, you’ve joined an email list.

Email lists are simply the email addresses and names of people who signed up, by one of many different means, to receive emails such as electronic magazines (“e-zines”) or newsletters, electronic courses (e-courses), or product information in their inbox.

Collecting customer and prospect contact information and keeping in touch with them on a regular basis is the key to any online business’s success.

Here are some of the main reasons to start building your list:

Presence – An email list that you use regularly gives you an easy way to keep your name in front of your customers and prospects on a continual basis.

Connection – Your average customer may only purchase from you a few times a year. But you continue to stay in touch with her, providing her with quality information that relates to a topic she’s interested in. When she DOES need to purchase, you’ll be the one she buys it from.

Education – Some products and industries require more education before prospects are ready to purchase. Email lists offer an easy, inexpensive way to provide the information your prospects need, moving them through the learning curve, until they’re ready to buy.

Feedback – Do your customers want your next product to be bigger or smaller than what you have now? Do they hate the background music on your website? Do they wish your software was compatible with a platform you don’t currently offer? Don’t guess — just ask them!

Easy to Share – Word-of-mouth can be your best source of new business. By providing easy-to-share electronic newsletters or product information, you make it more likely that your current customers will pass the word to their friends, without incurring a minute of your time or a penny of your money.

Those are some great reasons for building a list but how do you know what to write and when?

There are 4 primary types of email sequences every business needs, they are:

1. Nurture Sequence for your freebie – Follow Up Sequence – behind an opt-in
2. Transactional Sequence – Follow Up Sequence – behind a purchase
3. General/Newsletter Sequence – an email you send out at regular intervals to your list
4. Launch Sequence for a Program – promotional emails

What is the goal of a nurture sequence?

  • Build new relationship
  • Lasts 15 to 21 days

What is the goal of a transactional sequence?

  • Eliminate buyer’s remorse
  • Remember results sell

What is the goal of a newsletter?

  • Educate & Build TOMA (Top of Mind Awareness)
  • Send a weekly newsletter
  • EXAMPLE: Tuesday Tips. Wednesday Wins

What is the goal of a launch sequence?

  • Sell something
  • Average 3 emails per week

It’s that time of year to look back and see “what worked” and “what didn’t work” from this year so you can either implement more of it or less depending.
