Today I’m talking about a quick tip about using handouts when speaking. If you’ve followed me even for a short period of time, you know that I use speaking as my #1 marketing strategy in my own business. And I teach it to my clients and other entrepreneurs as well.
Speaking is really the #1 Fastest Path to Cash. You can leverage your time and expertise by talking on a video (like this one you are viewing), a telesummit, a webinar or in person at a conference, at a meeting or even a very small group. I’ve spoken to a room of as little as 5 people in the room (including myself and the host) and as many as 3,000. You can get started anywhere. So today, I want to teach you about using handouts in your speaking presentation, specifically offline but you can use these strategies for online speaking too. If you are using handouts when you are speaking online, you’ll drive people to a pdf that has a special link. You can use this strategy if you are even speaking on a radio show or a podcast too. Have you been trying to get yourself some speaking opportunities (I call them gigs) but you’re not having the best of luck getting booked?
Are you wondering how becoming a speaker will generate more business for you or why it’s such an important marketing strategy?
Well, I’ll tell you; I get most of my coaching clients and even most of my paying customers for other products and programs from speaking gigs. Sometimes they hear me speak in person at a conference or business event. Sometimes they hear me speak over the phone on a teleclass or webinar. Either way, being a speaker allows me to be the expert in my industry or on my topic. It brings credibility to what I do, who I am and it allows people to experience me quicker than if there were to just read a page or two on my website.
When people get to hear you or watch you for a longer period of time than just a quick hello or introduction it gives them more of a sense of what you do, how you can help them and they can make a more informed decision on if or how they want to work with you. I highly recommend adding speaking to your overall marketing strategies if you’re a small business owner.
In fact, I have a speaker training course on this topic because all my coaching clients need to learn what to do to become a speaker.
The following is that 6 Step Process.
Step 1: Determine WHO you’ll talk to and what do they want to hear. Ask yourself “What are you an expert in? or Who is your target market and where will we find groups of them? What do they care about exactly that relates somewhat to what you do?“ Do a search on Google, meetup.com, look for associations or other organizations with events, conferences and even online events and telesummits!
Step 2: Develop your speaking topics and speaker sheet. It’s important to BE PREPARED for speaking opportunities at all times if you expect to get any. You want to have a professional speaker sheet ready to email someone who wants to book you that includes your topics, descriptions, bullets of what they’ll learn, your bio, picture and contact information at the very least. Having a video of yourself on stage is also good.
Step 3: Strategize on where to get gigs. You’ll need to build a list of potential events, organizations or meetings that you can speak for locally, nationally and virtually. There are easy ways to find places but you need to do your due diligence if you want to get booked. Then you could delegate the contacting of those people and places but it’s not always that easy to find someone who really understands what to ask or say to do this, trust me, I’ve tried; I find that I’m always the best person to look for and contact people to get myself booked.
Step 4: Craft your presentations. It’s important to create your speaking presentations so that they are educational, informative, memorable and they make the audience take the action you want them to take at the end. Whether you’re making a sales pitch at the end or not, how you design your talk is crucial to your success, please don’t wing this.
Step 5: Design your accompanying marketing materials. Often times you’ll want handouts, flyers, order forms or table display materials for when you attend a live speaking event (as well as virtual – what to do online). Again, if you’re not prepared with these things then you’ll most likely waste your time doing the speaking in the first place. One thing I like to suggest when speaking to a group of people who aren’t that familiar with you is to have and make an “Easy YES Offer”. This is something low priced and easy for someone to buy that gives them a ‘taste’ of what you offer to ‘try you out’.
Step 6: Following up after a speaking gig. Most speakers don’t do this well at all and it could be more important than what you do AT the event itself. Developing a kick-butt follow up plan for after an event will provide ongoing lead generation and sales. Most of my sales come in the follow up process but don’t rely only on email marketing these days, you have to do phone calling, direct mail and even connect with prospects on social media sites too as they may only see one of these four attempts!
Hopefully this gives you some idea on what to get started doing to jumpstart yourself as a speaker.
Remember though, speaking is just ONE type of marketing strategy that you may want to do in your small business. Generally, you need to do 5-15 marketing strategies every month in order to maximize your potential.

As a speaker, you’ll need to know several ways to be prepared because many times a speaker will not be permitted to sell from the stage. There are things you can do to negotiate ways you can generate leads.

Are you ready to make money from speaking? I’m sharing information about what you need to have ready to go for any opportunity.
Speaking is one of the least expensive, most effective marketing strategies you can do in your business. If you’re already speaking then great, what I’m sharing in this article could be a good reminder for you.
If you are not speaking yet, then why not? Are you afraid of speaking or getting in front of an audience? Are you unsure of what to speak about or to whom or saying to yourself “who would care about what I have to say?”
Regardless of what you do in business you may want to consider speaking. Speaking allows you to be the expert in front of your prospects and peers. It gives you instant credibility and trust with the audience. And it speeds up the buying process when someone likes, trusts and is able to connect with you personally.
One of the biggest mistakes I see many speakers making however, is that they are rarely ever prepared for opportunities that may arise at any time.
Being prepared as a speaker will get you into more doors, position yourself as a professional to the people booking you to speak and it will allow you less stress and freedom to take advantage of all kinds of opportunities whenever they come up.
Here are a few things you want to make sure you have prepared:
Professional speaker sheet – with your bio and/or introduction and your talk title and description at the very least. You can add references, additional talk descriptions, testimonials and places you’ve spoken too if you like and you have.
Professional head shot – easily downloadable from your website or emailable
One to five (max) talk topics and descriptions – you can have more than one if it makes sense for your business and what you speak on are all complimentary to some extent. If you’re just starting out, start with one signature talk however to make your life easier.
Cover letter or email prewritten and ready to go – include all attachments and information someone would need to decide whether they want to book you as a speaker or guest
Page on your website talking about you as a speaker – include your talk titles, places you’ve spoken, videos of you speaking and more information someone looking for a speaker could download easily on their own.
Speaker videos – make sure you have at least one video of you speaking on stage or in front of a group; many events and bookers won’t even consider you without this these days.
Choosing the right signature talk you’d think is the easy part, however it can be the most crucial part of this whole equation, especially if you want to monetize your talk and your time.
You need to prepare what you’ll talk on based on what action you ultimately want the audience to take with you. Do you want them to sign up for your free gift or newsletter? Buy your book or product? Register for your event?
It’s important that you reverse engineer your talk based on what you want the audience to buy or sign up for. This is crucial and another big mistake I see many speakers making. They give a great talk then tag on a pitch to sell something totally different to the end and it feels like a sales pitch. Not good.

I am a huge proponent of using formulas to do things I’ve never done before. Let me give you an example, I don’t consider myself to be a great cook; just a competent one. I really enjoy good food and I view dining and the presentation of food as an art. But here’s the deal, I don’t have to be an artist to make a good meal. I can simply follow a recipe. If I don’t deviate from the recipe, chances are that I’ll make something that is pretty tasty. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe I’m a gourmet chef. But I can make a pretty wicked lobster bisque!
The recipe example I just gave can work with other things as well. There are plenty of examples for success in life that are solid. Some of you may have read my book, The Ten Commandments of Peak Performance. In that book, I focus on ten key areas that can significantly increase your levels of performance in life. In a sense, it is also a recipe for increasing your levels of performance so that you are operating at peak efficiency.
I think success works the same way. You can increase your chances for success substantially if you follow a recipe that others have used and that is proven to work. I’ve studied and researched the success factors of people in many different walks of life.
Here are five steps that you can take that I think are very powerful.
Step 1: Follow Your Passions
We live in one of the greatest of times. I truly believe that. Now more than ever, people have a greater chance of living a life fulfilled…whatever that means to you.
I’m a big believer in formulas. It used to be that you had to figure out what the formula for success and happiness was. If you didn’t have good role models or of you grew up in an environment that was not positive, encouraging, or growth oriented, this made things even more difficult.
Fortunately, the internet brings you information, knowledge, encouragement, and stories of success from all over the world. If you have a passion or a direction you want to pursue, chances are great that there is someone else out there that has the same thoughts. That someone has made it and they can help you make it as well!
So…not knowing what to do is a poor choice for not following your passion. Even if you can’t find examples of exactly what you want in life, you are sure to find things that are similar. From that you can extrapolate. Sure, it’s going to take some work. But everything is possible in life if you have the desire and passion.
The conventional wisdom of finding a job, slugging away for 20, 30, or 40 years, and hanging onto that job at all costs just doesn’t serve people very well. In fact, in most cases it never did. Research shows that 52.3% of people are dissatisfied with their careers or vocation.
Do what you love, and you’ll find that your life will work out. You will be fulfilled. You will make enough to pay the bills. You will make a difference to yourself, to your family, and to many others.
Step 2: Immerse Your Mind in Good Stuff
Napoleon Hill said “you become what you think about.” The book of proverbs says something similar; “For as he thinks in is heart, so is he.”
A study recently published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology confirms that you are deeply shaped by the books you read. In fact, just as watching television can chip away at your contentment, the books you read can be negative influences in your life. What you read can reflect the negative aspects of your personality, or it can serve to elevate your thoughts and turn you towards that which is positive.
Watch videos, read blogs, read books, listen to podcasts. Immerse yourself with positive things. Be very conscious and intentional about what you focus your attention on and who and what you spend your time with. What goes into your eyes and ears goes into your brain and into your heart – and it becomes who you are.
Step 3: Associate with Positive People.
Remember when you were growing up and Mom and Dad wanted to know who you were hanging around with? The reason was simple yet very powerful. If you associate with negative people or people that are engaged in activities that are immoral or illegal, you’ll tend to adopt the same thinking and behavior that they have.
It doesn’t matter if you think you are a good person. Just associating with the wrong type of individual can have a negatively profound effect on your thinking…and possibly your behavior. It is important to take stock on who is around you. If you take an honest assessment, you’ll find that not everyone is going to be the model of what you want to achieve in life. This is where some tough decision making must occur.
You may need to disassociate yourself from people that don’t serve you well or are dragging you down in life. This may be painful. You might get judged. You might suffer repercussions. This may be difficult because these people may be close friends or even family. In the case of the latter, you might wish to start by simply limiting your exposure to those people as much as you can.
When you associate with people that are like minded, that strive for the same type of betterment that you do, you’ll find that you will have very powerful allies. They will affect your success and happiness in life on both a conscious and a subconscious level. I call this very powerful action “The Power of Association.” Try it…it can be very effective.
Step 4: Have Gratitude
Successful people have gratitude. They are thankful for all that they have including all experiences; good and bad. They realize one of the keys to success is to “happily succeed rather than try to succeed to be happy.”
Dealing with challenging situations is just a matter of framing them the right way. Challenges are not meant to be seen as hurdles in the road, rather part of the road. It is the challenges in life that shape who we become because that is where the growth occurs.
Focusing on the things you don’t have in life serve no good purpose. There is a reason why one of the Ten Commandments in the bible says “You must not be envious of your neighbor’s goods.” Because it will do nothing but make you unhappy. You’ll be focusing on what you don’t have instead of what you do have.
Living in a state of lack is a huge disservice to yourself. You only see the negative that comes from not having the things you want in life. A better focus is one of abundance. Being grateful for what you have, even when you have to go through pain and failure, allows you to live in an abundant state.
A great exercise to institute the habit of gratitude is to write three things you are grateful for in the morning and in the evening. You should write these things down as opposed to just thinking about them. Writing things out takes them from the abstract into reality. It sets off a chain of commands in the neurons in the brain that lend itself to experiencing something in an entirely different way than just thinking about it.
Step 5: Get a Mentor or Coach
Too many people, the idea of getting a coach to help take them where they have never gone before is not a consideration. Not because they are against it. But because they just don’t understand the power and the value that coaching can bring. Many people think of athletics when it comes to coaches. And, that’s probably a good example of what a coach can do. An athlete who has a coach is more likely to:
Recovers more quickly and effectively from a bad performance
Learns more from a bad, and in fact every, performance
Develops more effectively during practices
Learns their talents and strengths more quickly and effectively
Creates a strategy to leverage their strengths to their advantage
Achieves more during that season
Putting athletic performance aside…wouldn’t it be great if you could do all of those things as well in your life? Of course it would! Hiring a coach to help take you places you have never been before is a very good investment.
If you are reticent to spend money on a coach you should ask yourself two questions: 1) What is the cost of failure? and 2) What is the cost of wasted time because you don’t know the best way to get what you want to achieve?
A good coach can listen to what it is you say and provide sold advice. They can be a confidential sounding board; a trusted advisor who can ask you provocative questions that help you uncover what your gifts, strengths, values, principles, true dreams, goals, and aspirations. A good coach can take all that information and help put you on the path to making those dreams become reality. Now…what’s that worth?
Like any recipe, formula, or set of instructions, these five steps are a guide. You have room for interpretation of how to execute them, but none should be discounted. They are all just as important as flour or wheat is to baking bread. If you leave those ingredients out the end result will be less than desirable.
Follow these five guidelines and you’ll begin to see a real differences as to the level of success in your life!

Today I want to talk about maximizing free gifts you offer in your business. This is a great way to generate leads both online and at events.
I’m talking about when you go to someone’s website and see an opt-in box where you are offered a free audio, video, webinar, a drawing, free report or download to entice you to sign up for their newsletter. If you are online, you need to offer this. And, your website needs to have the functionality to display the opt-in box, you’ll need a way to deliver your gift automatically via email or on your website.
You also need to have a free gift to offer when you are at a networking event. I’ve just returned from an exciting networking event and was surprised that many of the people there didn’t have a call to action at the end of their 30 second commercial to entice people to give them their business card (and permission to put them on their email list).
If you have the type of business where most people will not hire you on the spot, you need to be prepared to offer a freebie so people can experience you or your products/services and to interact with you. This is the start of the KNOW, LIKE, and TRUST relationships you want to build.
Here are some examples of a free offer:
A free consultation
A recording of one of your teleclasses or seminars
A video of you giving your Signature Speech or Talk
And for you network marketers out there who have products to sell but not services, you can do a drawing.

I’ve talked to several people recently about speaking in their business, writing a book and doing a lot of other fun things to get more exposure, more visibility so they can grow their business and make more money. Many of these people shared BIG concerns about being vulnerable, being transparent, about sharing their story.
Most of them really didn’t know the key insight, lesson or message they have to share. They are not sure what their worth was and what their story means to other people.
If this sounds like you, I want to encourage to you STOP! Just stop for a second – stop and think about what your story is! Many times we are just too busy to see what’s right in front of us – to see what’s missing in our business, in our energy, in the way we comes across to others whether online or in person.
I can relate to this because I had similar issues in the past. But once I learned how to just be ME and be transparent in both my business and personal life, it was a time of huge growth for me. I made more money and acquired clients that were more suited to me and what I do. I’ve found that sharing more about myself, my life, and experiences has translated into finding more clients who are the people I’m meant to work with. Wouldn’t you like those kind of clients too?
